The FPS is amazing after WU6, not sure how the other flight simulators can match this and the level of graphics

What! No they can’t!

These “other” much more developed sims are still subject to bugs.
And even with all those expensive addons [which incidentally can take way longer than
an MSFS update to install] none of them come anywhere near MSFS’s visual splendour.

So, let us cut to the chase here. MSFS’s novel and ground breaking implementation
renders ALL other [domestic] flight simulators obsolete.

I feel the need to call you Luke. For you need to let go!

ps.
Whilst I utterly disagree with you, I vehemently support your right to reasonably
express your opinion.

Regards.

To be fair, I personally (over 3.5 years) didn’t find too many bugs in X-Plane 11 although I am told in the early years there were quite a few.

Totally agree with you here. Also with all my X-Plane add ons I could be waiting 10 minutes or so for flights to load up. In FS 2020 I am maybe waiting 2 to 3 minutes at a guess.

I agree.
If true, there will be reasons why some devs continue to support XP.
Principally: Vested interests and inertia.

Let’s assume that X-Plane 12 can somehow magically catch MSFS in graphics (I doubt it will happen, but let’s assume anyways). If X-Plane 12 somehow magically came close to MSFS in graphics, I doubt the FPS will be very good for X-Plane. The reason is, X-Plane is on very old architecture and it uses old code. Changing old architecture and old code is not easy and costs a lot of time. In software development, we say that X-Plane has accumulated a lot of “technical debt.” MSFS is much newer and uses new code and architecture and likely has less “technical debt” than X-Plane.

That’s why if X-Plane comes close to MSFS in graphics, the FPS won’t be that close to MSFS because of all the "technical debt’ that X-Plane has accumulated. X-Plane would have to have a major overhaul of its architecture and code to yield the same level of graphics and FPS as MSFS.

Yes, the chances of X-Plane 12 matching FS2020 in both graphics and FPS has to be approaching almost zero.

X-Plane 12 will be concentrating instead on just improving graphics and having a higher fidelity of sim like features. That will be its USP and will be what differentiates itself from FS2020 to remain relevant.

Always refreshing hearing Austin speak honestly and openly about X-Plane.

Yup, I agree with this. I think there is probably an almost zero chance of X-Plane 12 matching MSFS in both graphics and FPS.

Yup, and I hope they wont match but surpass it

Kidding apart, don’t get this wrong: X-Plane rendering engine is not designed to give the highest FPS at all, it is designed to deliver a constant FPS instead. AFAIK, this is a requirement to get approved for professional simulation among other things.

This is why you get a much better experience with X-Plane when on final down to the runway and when taxiing there is no single hiccup in general, whereas in all FS version up to P3D4 you nearly always have a hiccup or more when passing below a certain AGL on final… ruining the immersion (It seems to me P3D5 thanks to their DX12 implementation has resolved most of these).

Its great. I just spent four hours flying to Atlanta and it CTD’d upon touchdown on the runway. This thing is a blast. Very rewarding. Walking away feeling really good about my experience. :frowning_face_with_open_mouth:

My preferred HMD for MSFS is my Reverb G2, and I also run a RTX 3080ti (EVGA FTW3 Ultra).

FPS in WMR with the Reverb G2 should never go over 90 frames (Reverb G2 max frame rate), that is if your WMR frame rates are set to 90hz (60hz is the other option). If you are running the HMD using WMR OpenXR and reprojection on/auto in the OpenXR Dev Tool, it will target around 45 frames (can get down to 22.5 frames with the latest updates and 1/4 frame timing).

I would be concerned if I saw an uncapped overblown frame count after switching over (Ctrl/Tab) to the HMD. With reprojection off (don’t care for reprojection) I have MSFS graphics tuned to get about 40 to 50 frames in most cases, and the frame rate will dip down to about 35 frames in very demanding areas. No stuttering, very smooth and the visuals are great. My son is always excited to get some play time in MSFS (that is every time he comes over to hang out), and his preferred method to enjoy MSFS is in VR. Unlike me, my kid (always will be even if he is 20) is a little sensitive to motion, and he has an eye condition that doesn’t play well with flashing and stuttering images. He can play MSFS on my rig for hours while we sit around ■■■■■, and he is amazed by how great it looks. THE FPS IS AMAZING !!

Quality over quantity is very important, and trust me I struggle with that concept all the time… at the moment in my living room all within 10 square feet of each other I have a gaming pc, a gaming laptop (primarily used to tune GM LS engines or for travel), a windows 10 streaming pc, a cheap windows 10 tablet (in case I need to bring with me a W10 device that I will not cry about if it was lost/stolen), and a more expensive windows 10 tablet (also used to tune GM LS engines & stuff). Trust me I know all to well about GIVE ME ALL THE FRAME RATE and my childish need to want all the stuff… more must be better. My kid just shakes his head, and then jokingly mocks me a bit. Hmm… I think I need to build and gift him a gaming pc.

Oh yeah, Asobo/Microsoft/Mods thank you for everything you all do (unfortunately people tend to vocalize more if they have a negative experience). Not only have you made and support a great product, you make it possible for my son and I to enjoy a common interest (with our busy schedules) without having to be out in the HOT & HUMID Florida summer sun.

I have to agree London is definately smooth in VR now. On the flip side the photogrammetry seem to take forever to load in high fidelity and more often than not I’m getting pg bandwidth warnings which I don’t remember nearly as much before SU5 anyway.

Buildings look very ugly in London - Bugs & Issues / Scenery - Microsoft Flight Simulator Forums

yup. got tired of the pg morphing and just downloaded the london area to manual cache. i think it was almost 30gb total. it did help a wee bit, so that’s that.

Yes, Asobo has done wonderful work on the scenery, and deserves proper credit. Their gurus have done things thought not possibke 5 years ago.
I just kind of wish that some of the loose ends in updating and product installation could be analyzed and perhaps turned over or outsourced to a team that can specialize on that aspect of the simulator. I say that not as a dig to Asobo… far from it, i want the Asobo team to continue stellar development as they have proven. Unfortunately, the recent glitches with updates, and some lingering ones with product installation in general, have produced some negative feelings. Although, i have to admit my understanding of the line between Asobo and MS is blurred, so it is hard to follow in whose domain solutions should be targeted.
And of course, there is a very long list of bugs and enhancement requests in the queue, that needs Asobo s prime focus.

I’ve seen this before. Just alt-tab or windows+d out of the game and back in a few times. At least that’s what works for me.

You’re absolutely right. Especially Xplane literally crumbles with many add-ons, but hey, performance is gonna decrease further in Xplane, that’s for sure. I’m not sure those people raving about XP12 realise that. 25 fps+ to fly over an autogen playstation 3 world, no thanks. Msfs2020 has many things that need to be improved and added, many bugs to be fixed, but it certainly is the future. Nothing out there is as smooth.

I have an quest 2 and just started using Virtual Desktop. The result is amazing.
Not sure if that works for you.

Shutdown the VR app after exiting VR

But MSFS can’t match the realism

Somebody posted an interview video by Flight Sim Association with Austin here in another thread. It was interesting in a sense that the main things he wanted to showcase about the next gen XP were trees and lighting, ergo graphics. They did not look too bad, but I really don’t think that’s enough to compete with MSFS that has the whole planet out-of-the-box for free with still much better graphics. XP has always been and will stay a niche product, MSFS is for the broad market.

But I didn’t infer X-Plane is in any need of competing with FS2020 in my post either

But if you really want to compare FS2020 and X-Plane (next), you’ve only seen just what LR wanted us to see of XPnext so far. We don’t have the full picture yet either…
