With the awesome people at Working Title now officially conscripted to work on Garmin avionics, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what this could mean for future first and third party aircraft releases. There’s no doubt that X-Plane’s efforts to set a high baseline for avionics naturally led to lots of impressive third party aircraft, such as the HotStart TBM900.
It’s pretty difficult to buy a new aircraft without some form of Garmin glass. A well developed and tightly integrated simulation of these systems undoubtedly has tremendous value for aspiring and current pilots. Therefore, it seems obvious that GA aircraft developers will gravitate towards models that include some variant of the Garmin ecosystem.
The G1000 is now available from the following piston and turboprop aircraft manufacturers:
Beechcraft
Cessna
Diamond
Cirrus
Mooney
Piper
Quest (now Daher)
The G3000/5000 is present in an impressive array of turboprops and business jets including:
Piper M600
HondaJet
Cirrus Vision SF50
Embraer Phenom 100
Embraer Phenom 300
Cessna Citation M2
Cessna Citation CJ3+
Learjet 70/75
Cessna Citation Latitude
I would love to see a Citation M2 at some point. What G1000/3000/5000 aircraft would you like to see?
The GNS430 and GNS530 haven’t been sold new since 2012.
While there are a lot of great older aircraft with steam gauge + 530/430 combinations, there are no new units being made, and most aircraft that came with them will have transitioned to the GTN750/650 by now.
Even the original G1000 (which is basically what the sim G1000 is) is out of date now, the NXi has many features we don’t have in the sim.
For whatever reason, the WT G1000 mod doesn’t work for me in the Beech G36 or the Cessna 172. Haven’t tried the other 5 aircraft but the Altitude Hold mode doesn’t seem to work. The aircraft perform as expected from the MSFS hangar, but not if the mod is in the Community folder. Same is true with the mod for the ICON A5, although it is not a feature of the MSFS Hangar.
There’s already an excellent mod for the GNS units that recreate them as true to the real world units as the current state of the sim will allow. You can literally use the real unit’s manual as a reference to use it. It’s that good.
If you’re flying GNS-equipped planes and not using this mod, you’re doing yourself a great disservice.
Last update to the G1000 was in November. He’s been on hiatus since early December. It’s probably safe to say we won’t be seeing or hearing from him again and will have to wait for the mod to become part of the core sim before we see new work on the G1000.
Hi there. I’m the dude who worked on much of the original G1000 mod, though not the 0.4 beta we’ve had hanging around for a while. I think one thing folks don’t generally realize is that, at least while we were acting as a community project, the CJ4 had 4 people working almost exclusively on it, plus a team of testers and QA folks. On the avionics side, we’ve had two people spread across three different systems, hardly a full dev team.
And, yes, the guy who put in a bunch of work on the 0.4 beta has taken a break. My own life got pretty crazy there for a while, too, with demands from my full-time job and other issues. But the good news is that now I’m able to work on these things full time.
I’m not able to give details of our roadmap now as partner developers, but I can say that we all realize that the avionics are one of the areas the sim needs the most help and we plan to spend a lot of effort focused there as a full development team. We’re working on some awesome stuff that I can’t wait to see come out.
That said… you are correct, there will probably not be much more to see on the G1000 mod itself. I have been working on fixes to a couple problems that have cropped up with 0.3.4 interacting with the newer G3000 and will hopefully be able to release a small patch this week. But that’s mainly maintenance work to keep the free products functional like we told the community we’d try to do.
I believe you have to have the BE36 mod load last in the Community Folder - mine downloaded prefixed by Z as in Z-bonanza-g36-improvement-project.
Also you should retain the “workingtitle” prefix to the G1000 and G3000 mods.
Works fine on both BE36 and C172 1000 for me.
As for updates, not sure if there is a lot more that needs doing - although I’m no expert on the actual G1000 of course.
Thank you. I didn’t know the guy doing the 0.4 (which is awesome in all kinds of ways despite the lacking functionality) wasn’t the same who had done the original (you). I appreciate you clearing that up for us. It’s hard to keep track of who’s who when it’s such a diverse team.
You guys have accomplished some pretty amazing stuff so far. I think as a community we’re all extremely grateful for what you’ve done for us. And you guys deserve the reward of where your work has now brought you. We all wait with baited breath to see what you guys are going to bring to the sim in the future.
Quite understandable under the circumstances. For the most part, the G1000 works as it should and doesn’t really “need” work atm. Features, perhaps, but I’m sure those will come down the road once underlying issues with avionics, nav systems, etc are sorted out. You guys have to focus on the bigger picture now. We’ll be benefitting from the fruits of your labours as they become available in the sim in the future.
All I really hope that the features and functionality of 0.4 find their way into your future work. It would be a shame to see that work not see the light of day.
No problem. To be clear, and not deny any credit where it’s due, the other guy did contribute to the 0.3 line, especially in the area of the customizable engine gauges. But his more recent work was focused on the 0.4 rewrite.
Thank you. I’m excited for us to be where we are now, and really able to work with the full resources of Microsoft and Asobo backing us up. Of course, that means there’s also a lot of pressure on us to deliver. But that’s fine, that’s the way it should be.
We definitely don’t plan on wasting all that work.
I agree, great work on all projects. I still have an issue wherein I believe the G36 used to ascend or descend to Reference Altitude and home in it within a few feet of altitude. No longer. It will miss by hundreds of feet, if it comes close at all. Behaves like the algorithm output regarding Reference vs. actual altitude deviation has no authority over pitch of the elevator. I tried looking at the various files included with the aircraft and the G1000, but couldn’t find any associations that might cause this (like I knew what I was looking for.. LOL!). I’ve found that the box stock Asobo aircraft and G1000 seek and hold a selected altitude. Would prefer the WT version because of the ability to use LEAN screen.
