The resolution degradation with increasing distance of 3D-Trees is far too aggressive in VR, since SU3

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue: i have very low LOD of Trees about 40-80 meters away from my Airplane or my Avatar in VR since the SU3 Live Build. Its also the same in 1.6.5 SU4 Beta. It looks like the LOD Curve for this Rendering Distance is too aggressiv. Trees and bushes near an further away looks better then some of them between this distance, they look like old 2020 2D Trees. It’s very difficult to catch it with a Screenshot.

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)? Every time since SU3 Live Build

REPRODUCTION STEPS

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:

[PC Only] What other relevant PC specs can you share? 64GB RAM, R7 7800x3d

MEDIA

Please add a screenshot or video of the issue occurring.

Trees on Ultra about 30 meters away, is it possible that the slider in VR Graphics does not work, always on low?

Resolution degradation with distance is definitely way too aggressive in VR to be realistic.

Here is an example of how a palm tree looks like from 10m away vs from 20m away.

14900K, RTX 5090, Pimax Crystal Light, Rendering resolution 100% in both Pimax Play and MSFS 2024, Foveated rendering Off, Dynamic Settings Off, TLOD = 400, OLOD = 200

Asobo, please do something about it. Thanks

Does anyone see any improvements in SU4 Beta?

I’ve tried many settings, but I don’t see any difference between low and ultra vegetation settings. Are the sliders broken in VR? only the conifers seem to work.

Please Asobo that is not ok

Another example of unrealistic degradation of resolution within 10-20 m.

14900K, RTX 5090, Pimax Crystal Super UW, Rendering resolution 100% in both Pimax Play and MSFS 2024, Foveated rendering Off, Dynamic Settings Off, TLOD = 400, OLOD = 200

Why is this tread closed?

It isn’t.
It is still open, and has never been closed.

The last beta had some VR optimizations mentioned in the release notes. Has anyone noticed any improvement regarding this issue? If not, could this thread perhaps be moved to a SU4 beta topic? I had to revert to SU3 a few weeks ago and therefore haven’t been able to test it. Thanks.

I tested SU4 Beta .30 today, and unfortunately, there’s no improvement in this area. The trees look terrible at medium distances and severely ruin the immersion. The graphics sliders for trees and bushes work, but they only affect the number of trees and the density of the undergrowth. The quality of the tree rendering is only slightly altered. I found some old screenshots from SU1 and SU2 for comparison. This is what it looked like with the same settings and hardware (trees and bushes up, 4090, VD, Quest3) before SU3.

Edit: Also in .31 SU4 Beta no changes

It would be really important to reintroduce the LOD tree system from SU2, especially with regard to the introduction of PSVR for Playstation users next year!

Unfortunately, su4 hasn’t brought any improvements to this issue yet, but thanks to the dev-team for the big update anyway.

It seems to be more or less severe in different tree species. Here in the tropics, it is very pronounced, worse than in northern flora. Trees and bushes on ultra, many settings high.

Agreed, trees when on the ground are pretty bad. Fine for Medium/Low but for High and Ultra.. would really nice it they were better at medium range.

SU5 Beta Trees Ultra in VR. Unfortunately, this problem still occurs in the current SU5 beta. @TheSevenflyer, why isn’t this bug being logged? Could it be moved to the current SU5 VR section? It’s a real shame; I’ve often flown VFR multiplayer with a friend since the first day of MSFS24, and we loved the beautifully generated 3D trees up to SU2. Now it severely disrupts the immersion in VR, for example, after landing in the bush. Here another example

My best guess would be that it is probably due to the fact that it only has 27 votes and thus isn’t very high on anyone’s radar yet.
Only issues that occur as a result of the Beta are permitted in that category.
Pre-existing conditions are not.

Thanks for your answer

Unfortunately, it seems to have gotten even worse in Beta 1.7.9; here’s a recent screenshot!

How many votes to get attention to it? It’s a real issue.

I see the topic is at 43 votes, this is an older list, #120 (as far as the list went) had 58 votes for comparison.

Clearly the lod graphics values change as the distance does but my guess is this is necessary to give the performance others are screaming about. So for the people advocating for this, is there something you are willing to give up to have better trees?

It’s also just potentially too much rendering for modern GPU’s. It’s a future proof game, it’s built for next gen hardware. Rendering thousands of trees at high quality is not something you can do in any AAA video game. When you’re doing vr + high resolution + max LOD’s etc, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s just too much for a 5090. But I’m just guessing.
