The Thing I Love About the Clouds

Weather has been improving over time. The thing I really appreciate, and was reminded of today, is the variety in the clouds.

While some have noted the grainy aspect to the clouds, the variety of clouds and patterns is simply stunning in the sim. I loaded up today in the Great Lakes area, where a nice storm system is brewing. Getting on top of the weather in the TBM at FL300 and seeing a carpet of beautiful clouds below me was simply awesome. I also loved seeing areas of vertical development where some clouds were darker and growing a bit above the base layer. Realism+

Also seeing “holes” in the weather below, as you would in the real world is something I’ve never experienced in any simulator weather program that I can recall. The level of immersion that clouds alone bring to this sim - out of the box - is epic.

Fully agree! And what I love about the transitions is that you don‘t notice any. The weather system is awesome! :+1:

Absolutely! Was just thinking that. No clouds popping in and out, etc. As I march Eastward in the TBM, I’m leaving the area of heavier weather with a seamless transition into less and less cloud coverage. Brilliant.

Got to admit, I’m speechless with every flight…so as they say a picture is about a 1000 words.

Even the “simplest” cloud formations are just ridiculously realistic. Like you said, every flight is just incredible.

I totally agree. I have also been flying around the great lakes and the overcast clouds look stunning. On x-plane the 2d cloud sprites simulating overcast would bring down my top range computer but where there seems to be no noticeable performance impact. Fab.

Asobo and Microsoft deserve an Oscar for the weather system

Can’t resist adding a few of my own. Such variety

And yet some folk do nothing but complain about the clouds and the weather in general, even going as far as buying an external weather engine!
Unbelievable!

I agree with you. The weather, as is, is just stunning! unparalleled by ANY previous/other flight simulator [with or without add on’s].
Every time I break through the cloud layers I get another ‘capture the moment’, moment!
Splendid.

How about some more?
These clouds are really something else.

Have to agree, the clouds are simply stunning.
And now I have reliable Live weather with a workaround I posted elsewhere it’s even more immersive.

Was flying around Northern Italy earlier today, came in from the mountains in the North and it was simply stunning. Went to land at the airport near Milan but had to abort as there was fog/low cloud below 1000ft.

Whoever was responsible inside Asobo for creating this weather system/clouds deserves an award.

Incidently I have found the NVidia driver 452.06 gives me the best quality clouds for some reason, so I’m staying with that for now.

I agree with everybody here, the variety and quality of clouds are stunning in MFS2020. Plus, we don’t have to do ANYTHING more with plugins or third party stuff to reach those results.
I have to say this: this is the first time in my life that I spend more time in flying and enjoying than in having troubles with settings and plugins, that’s a wonderful pleasure.

Thank you Asobo !

I agree 100% the FS2020 clouds are stunning and don’t cause a fps drop, amazing.

So true! And that is the brilliance we have here. It’s like we’ve all been conditioned to expect frame hits from clouds that don’t even really look all that realistic.

I like seeing cloud bands a hundred miles off on the horizon and knowing they’re really there and will be approaching

Since we have some great cloud photos here, thought I’d share one. Here, what appears to be an approaching squall line or front of sorts was literally right on my set up for the final approach. It was close but made it in before it hit the airport. Nice to see the radar showing the sharply defined line as well! This shot was taken back at the end of August in the 748. This was setting up for the ILS 18R approach into Memphis…

Flying in South America last couple of weeks … here’s one I grabbed:

And … I have also been finding the clouds, weather fronts and winds (ground and aloft), broadly agree with the weather I’ve been seeing on Windy.com. Transitions between weather regions are superbly done. Quite a technical accomplishment I suspect.

Agreed with all the above. If we could have grand cirrus patterns it would be the icing on the cake…
