This should have been Microsoft Flight! 2

I’m not sure Asobo have really grasped what the Flight Simulation franchise means to the community and have leaned too heavily into the gaming side of things, compromising the title as a traditional simulation product.

This release could very easily have been “Microsoft Flight! v2 - Powered by Microsoft Flight Simulator” and I don’t think anyone would have minded all of the issues so much with it being marketed as game… but this as a serious simulation product? There’s something not right.

Why, oh why, didn’t you just spend resources improving the flight model in Microsoft Flight Simulator? The software was fine, very much getting to a decent place with modifications, a mature SDK, high-end aircraft, a good developer ecosystem etc. and you’ve just sown mass confusion and frustration into everything! Why?

In this hobby, people don’t mind spending money on new hardware (hard drives etc) for flight simulation - it’s the done thing. I feel like all of this streaming malarkey is simply to ensure it works properly on Xbox but it’s at the expense of a high definition experience on PC hardware that is much more capable - it’s an absolutely nonsensical decision.

I feel like 2024 has regressed back two years from 2020 - 2020 feels the much more polished sim as it stands! I encourage anyone who still has it installed to fire it up, you’ll be shocked how good you had it before this new release.

Look familiar?

I was thinking that, too… I remember “Flight”… it was mocked and summarily dismissed.

MS/Asobo… build upon and improve 2020… add enough trendy features to justify the price of a new edition… Heck, I’d pay just to have the piston engine modeling fixed … and make “Cockpit Look” panning accessible to software like Spad…

Twas my first impression too. Kept thinking msfs2024 is what MS Flight was to msfsX. Weve gone full circle.

I think there’s actually a lot of people who took 1 look at all their excellent add-ons, sceneries, etc. and thought to themselves WHY would I go through the burden of starting over again?

Regardless of the state of 2024…

Maybe for some people. I was ready to abandon 2020 because I naively imagined 2024 would be the same but better, built on 2020’s solid foundation. The same but with better graphics, more consistent performance, more details, improved VR, and more stuff to do and explore.

Instead it’s a terribly performing, bug-riddled mess. Very disappointing. I do think there’s potential there but there’s soo much to fix.

This just sounds awful. I speant an absurd amount of money on adons from the Microsoft Store, Orbx, SimMarket, JustFlight, IniBuilds and direct to vendors like simworks simulations etc on MSFS2020. Way too much money, and i don’t want to lose that. Last night i had amazing time flying around in 2020 with breathtaking graphics, environments, ambience and fps. I wonder why 2024 could not have just been introduced as a paid addon to MSFS2020. They could have renamed the MSFS2020 product to just Microsoft Flight Simulator and built upon it that way. With larger paid addons changing the architecture. That way its more seamless and less jarring and disturbing for the community. A new paid 2024 addon, you can take or leave it, but it is so compelling you want to take it. To change the whole package to something different with encrypted planes etc… This current mess just seems horrible. I am waiting a long long long time until all these bugs are ironed out. I am still just so satisfied with my experience on MSFS2020. As far as I am concerned it has been running better than it ever has. Not sure if the way they released this is a good thing. It seems like they could have taken smaller steps that introduced change in a more controlled way. This seems like chaos. I am eagerly hoping this all works out, but it seems like a disaster. Planning on flying tonight. Its Friday and going to enjoy some flight time in msfs2020 knowing full well it will work and i will enjoy it.

i would just like to get do a flightplan abd get in the cockpit hit autopilot and see the scenery! Will this ever be possible?

Worse… it’s now all piled into your environment all at once. Every 2020 item you’ve ever purchased from the store… duplicate airports… enhancements that no longer make sense… it’s all there streamed into your environment and right now, there’s no way for you to “unstream” or “uninstall” anything.

Could not agree more. You really wonder once they get the server issues sorted, how they go about fixing this. Bugs aside, I think people might be able to get more comfortable if:

  1. They allow downloading/disabling of content so everything is not streamed and you can manage your content library
  2. Fix the absolutely horrific controls interface
  3. Allow for mods/liveries on the default aircraft
  4. Improve backward compatibility as promised

If they address those thematic issues, it will be be more about banging out the bug list.

I have a hunch that might be part of the reason some people are having performance issues and others are not.

i haven’t been able to use 2024 that much because its not really working for me atm

but from the little i have seen so far, i have to agree with the op
in there, pretty much everything screams “game” to me… even the scenery looks more game like to me
i dont know if i’m just seeing things (could be) but the flight model actually feels LESS realistic to me… much more simple and easy… the a/c feels like its flying on rails… you point the nose at the runway and thats it

myself, and others, pointed out this gamifying the day the first trailer came out… what was it… 2 years ago? to me it was quite obvious
“it looks a bit too gamey” is what we said
and we were instantly stomped, bullied, mocked and ridiculed (while moderators stood by and watched, i might add)
now… here we are, and if you ask me, i think we were right
i really dont see any major improvements for the base simmer,
yeah, sure, there are a few bits here and there… sure… but nothing groundbreaking
i think there’s no denying that the BIG stuff was not done thinking about what the core simmer wants, more like what gamers want,
and what they want is action!!! a score!! they want a story!! they want it to be FUN!!
well i dont want it to be fun, i want it to be boring, but realistic
i know the career mode was made consulting with real world pilots and aviation experts… yeah i know, i get all that… but all this points stuff and money and reputation thing?..that’s not me… at all

when its working right i will try it out thoroughly, of course… i mean why the hell not? its right there… of course i will
but i really don’t feel this is for me

just my opinion
