I assume you have got this sorted by now. If not, there is a bug in the Store that is beyong the control of the MSFS team. What you should do is install the actual XBox app. Then launch it but dont do anything else.
Then go to the Store and look for updates and it will appear. Search the forum as these details are explained elsewhere more fully.
It does not mean you are running XBox or XBox apps. Its just a way to get the updates.
I have been struggling to update the MSFS2020 for a couple of days now. Error with digital ownership is what I keep getting. I have not taken to the skies in two dayâŠit is killing. Any ideas?
I have not ever had any problems updatingâŠthe problems start when you try and go flying after the downgrade dates.

Finally worked but I have no idea how or what I did. Just kept trying to run it and click on update until a different screen showed up and updated like in pervious times. Not sure why they force the updates. Why not give us a choice. In all other software I donât update until I know all bugs or incompatible addons work with the latest updates. Iâm just glad I donât depend on FS as my main sim yet. They need to address these issues.
But doesnât it delete all your setting and mods? That is a terrible way to have to update. If I had to uninstall a game to update it, I wouldnât bother re-installing it.
NO,
(1) All your setting are stored back on the MS servers
(2) Your MODS (in Community) â you just rename the Community folder BEFORE you -re-install, and then rename it back again, after the Update.
I would advise you to take the opportunity to also BACKUP your current Community folder, elsewhere, before you rename, or updateâŠ
Even better, use a LINKING program like MSFS AddonLinker
Had the same problem, just download the A320 FlyBy Wire installer and run it from outside the sim.
That is because MSFS does not allow (cannot allow) running an old version online. Server communications could be changed with an update, MSFS is connected to a server. They donât keep 20 separate gateways for each of the 20 MSFS versions on servers.
I did succeed in postponing an update once (UK).. just disable your internet connection, you can start the sim, click the offline-box, and fly around. Only issue is bad scenery of course.. and youâll be alone, without ATC, life weather or other things that depend on your connection. I donât know if that still works.
This! Here is the Philippines, MSFS / Azure gives me roughly 6 Mbps download speeds (Steam gives me 170 Mbps). MSFS updates for me are counted in half days, because it usually takes me about 2 days to update everything, incl. content manager content.
There are other game companies that do updates but also allow you NOT to update if you donât want to. Microsoft is the world leader in software so I donât think it would be a stretch for them to figure a way to do this. There has to be âotherâ reasons they require everyone to update but only they know why.
You miss the point. Any program that comes with all its scenery ready on your disk and everything else you need via online ranking lists and online marketplace-like features can do optional updates easily. During the game, only name tags of other players are needed.
But MSFS requires a life connection for scenery, downloading massive amounts of data while moving your aircraft. Things change in that part of the program, because graphics is improved, ATC or life weather links are changed, etcetera. Any small change will require different communications. As MSFS was released early, they put obligatory updates. To have the freedom to change things.
Example, this recently happened: suppose MS/Asobo put a change in MSFS texture compression, to optimize memory and server transfer, by using another compression coding format. If that update would be optional, it would only work for people who accepted the update. Also, each server would be required to keep petabytes of data in 2 different formats. As a result, server traffic would become unpredictable and hosts donât like that. The mix would also make it difficult to see if a change has any effect.
My experience on numerous occasion is that the most Reliable way to update, is to Re-Install the new version.
It may well be a Placebo effect , but many times when I have just âupdatedâ, I have had âIssuesâ that were 100% eliminated by a re-install.
May take a long time to re-install, so you can always do it overnight when you are sleeping. !!
Well I think they have a responsibility to their customers to not force updates if itâs going to screw up the game for them. Iâm sure they could provide updates that donât break the last versions so you could choose when to update. Itâs been a mess from the first release which was probably a year premature. Now many users are suffering monthly from all the updates.
No they are not suffering from all updates. Donât believe all you read here.
Even if it were optional, updating is not a pick and choose. MSFS still has many updates, because developers are still changing things. Leaving the update chain would be missing all future updates. If you would dismiss SU-5 you would not be able to run WU-6, or any other updates following.
I donât want to wait a night for a reinstall. Canât you save (or leave) your files in some way ? Iâve recently read a tip here.. go \Community, go two levels down.. and then rename the âpackagesâ directory. Then, remove MSFS using Windows âAdd or remove Programsâ. Reboot the machine. Then , rename the âpackagesâ directory back, 120GB will be preserved. THEN, do the install. If that works (I don;t know I did not test it) you can reinstall MSFS within an hour or so. Ever tried that ?
Not sure what was going on for you, but on my system, I also had to install the Xbox app. It took 30 seconds. I then went back to the Store and the app was updatedâŠagain in 30 seconds.
I then started the game, it updated the core files, and I went to Content Manager and updated the additional scenery files. Done.
Had I known the Xbox app was required, I could have eliminated waiting and checking the Store, but once I knew, it was very simple to update.
Iâm only saying that they should give users a choice when to update. People plan flights with others or online with Vatsim, sit to fly and find out it has to update possibly screwing up the sim or at least delaying their ability to fly. I work with software every day and never update when I have important work to get done.
I do both audio and video work. I would NEVER EVER update one of my software programs if I had an important clientâs projects in house that I was working on. It is just to iffy. Now I know FS2020 is NOT mission critical and if I canât fly for a couple of hours while I wait for the update to install - no BIG deal. The problem is that every time a new update comes along something somewhere in the program ceases to work the way it did before the update.
Right now I am unable to use my Logitech multi panel since the last update did something to the software so I cannot input or change anything in the multi-panel. My radio and switch panel still work GREAT. I know we are still in the âgrowing stageâ but it would be nice NOT to have something that has worked for months all of a sudden not work when a new update comes along. I am a BETA tester for a few audio software programs I know I put the new software thorough a very rigorous checkout just so others donât have problems when it finally comes out. Something in the BETA testing is not working because it seems that every time an update comes out something in the program changes. This should be caught early on. Maybe Microsoft needs to refresh who does their BETA testing.
I love the sim and what it can do. It is just always worrying that every time I do an update I will not be able to use the sim for a number of days⊠FWIW
With respect I think the level of annoyance that this update created for people was directly proportional to the time it took to find out the app was actually needed. Some of us tried several different things first to no avail and only then installed the app when we discovered, almost be accident that it was necessary to have the app to get a mandatory update to actually appear in the store.
Then maybe the option is to wait all month and hope one day your system magically works correctly, all by itself.
BTW: You donât âwait all nightâ â you go to bed and Sleep !!!
