Thunderstorms are back in live wx

I’m curious how that would be accomplished. Clouds are constantly changing and evolving. Updrafts, downdrafts, ‘bubbles,’ and atmospheric layer turbulence are also all quite dynamic.

I think I’ve heard something about computational fluid dynamics being enhanced in FS2024, but I’m guessing that has to do with flight modeling, and not weather.

Thanks - I’ll need to have a look next time when I am flying close to a thunder cloud.

There is a pretty severe thunderstorm right now over central europe where i am living. On MSFS live weather it just …rains where the TS is IRL. Clout tops in the sim are around FL010. IRL there was a huge CB visible before it came close to me.’

Now i dont need the position of individual storm cells to be 100% accurate ±1km, but “areas” with CBs that actually behave like CBs would be nice. Similar to what existed in FSX with active sky. weather radar also worked back then and we were able to enter a storm area, fly around and between CBs etc even if their position wasnt accurate comapred to real life. Thats all i would ask for regarding TS: what already has been done in the previous sims.

Is there any info it it will work as intended in FS2024? If asobo isnt planning to fix this, it would be nice if the finally opened up their weather system to let 3rd party devs do their job like with previous sims. I dont get the logical reason behind not allowing it but sticking to an incomplete system they themselves are not willing to fix.
“Not cooking and also not giving the pot to anyone else.” is a spanish proverb that fits this.
Current AS for MSFS is also noticeably struggling to get around the limitations. Thunderstorms are depicted, but without any towering clouds.

BTW: Here is a discussion over at the Forums of Hifi (Devs of Active Sky) about implementing CBs in MSFS. The dev states the issue for the absence is a limitation in cloud height MSFS is depicting, which is about half of the value given. It has appearently been done for performance reasons.

CBs are already there, just that the height is restricted. Let’s see what happens when AS increases the height, I bet some will find it ok and some won’t…

Still have yet to find one anywhere.

I’m flying in live weather over eastern New Mexico right now and I’m seeing lightning.

This is the first time I’ve seen this live in 2+ years.

Yep, I was just checking out the new freeware Whiteman AFB scenery from Top Mach in MO and there was a thunderstorm with lightning just outside of the base.

Just tried near LEMD (Madrid). We had some huge thunderstorms for the last hours, and in the sim almost clear skies… The only way to see storms is via preset.

I just saw lightning for the first time in 2 years using live weather. I was flying from Florida to the Dominican Republic on a cargo run, and there was actually lighting in the distance off the coast of Florida. Unfortunately, it was occurring in almost completely sunny skies (no CBs or anything of the sort).

Huge thunderstorm today in the north of Spain.
Of course I went out flying to see and hear.
Well, the clouds, the winds, the rain, everything good.
Zero lighting and zero thunder.
Are we sure it’s working?
I haven’t seen it since that version were it was constant even with clear skies.
Since they fixed that, nada.

In my personal experience over the past while, it’s very hit and miss.

I wouldn’t say “it’s back” more, “it may occur”

Weather engines like ActiveSky FS, etc… definitely add them back in reliably (again in my own experience).

Not a single bolt of lightning all summer long, even when flying in areas with severe thunderstorms at that time.

Lightening in live weather never went away, it just became extremely uncommon and frequently not appearing where you expect it. Asobo went from one extreme to the other…

And now it’s gone in 2024. Love it.

So I am getting this correct? I am still on 2020 and the main reason for me to consider buying 2024, which was more diverse and accurate weather, doesnt exist? Despite it having been heavily advertised by Asobo?

Where was that advertised? The only things I recall being specifically touted for 2024 were cirrus clouds, tornadoes in missions only, and updates to the lighting model and the way cloud layers affect lighting.

Still happening in 2020

Was just at FVFA, all sorts of lighting even though only light clouds, no lighting on trackers.

It would be ideal if the sim could use the same data source these lightning trackers use.
