Version 1.2 update:
Crosswind ground handling improved:
Crosswind has no effect below 15kts taxi speed and only reaches full effect at 60kts on take-off.

Features engine, flight dynamics, ground handling and camera improvements.
Fully compatible with all third-party liveries.
Fully compatible with the Got Friends 40th Anniversary Expansion.
Includes Wheels, Bush Wheels and Amphibian versions.
Simply drag and drop the “tiger’s dhc2 mod” folder into your Community folder.

Engine improvements:
Manifold Pressure needle stops at 40" at sea level.
Throttle and rpm can be set according to the settings for climb, cruise, descent and landing as stated in the included extracts from the POH.
Plane no longer creeps forward at idle (see Ground Handling below).
Fuel economy adjusted to achieve full range.

Flight Dynamics improvements:
Less twitchy pitch and roll responses.
Increased lift for improved short take-off, and handling at low speeds.
Cruise speed of approx. 135mph at 5,000ft, 120mph at 10,000ft (wheels version).
Amphibian version cruise speed is around 10mph slower than the wheels version.

Ground Handling improvements:
Crosswind ground handling improved up to 10kts wind speed.
Prop idle rpm improved to prevent creeping forward at idle.
Brakes adjusted to prevent a forward roll while braking on rollout or taxiing.

Cockpit Camera improvements:
Pilot’s view adjusted to include the GPS units on the right of the panel.
Engine Controls view (Ctrl+5) adjusted for a clearer view of the Manifold Pressure and RPM gauges.

I’m not 100% sure I will keep the camera adjustment yet but she certainly flies better. Thanks for this.

What’s the purpose of limiting the manifold pressure at 2500? Does DHC-2 have such a limiter on it? I thought these engines pushed past redline pretty easily, and it’s up to the pilot to maintain the correct MP to avoid damaging the engine? If the redline was improperly positioned on the gauge previously, I can see fixing that. But if the mod is artificially limiting the MP, I wouldn’t agree with that.

I’ve never piloted a radial engine plane before, so I’m basing my question on reading and assumptions.

You’re right, the Junior Wasp has a supercharger, so at lower altitudes it will definitely overrun the maximum allowable MP, and doing so in my Thranda Beaver in X-Plane has cost me some compression in a few cylinders.

According to the POH, in certain low temperature conditions over-boosting can happen but as far as I know those conditions can’t be accounted for in this sim:

What the manual is stating there is overboosting and detonation are possible below normal permissible MAP, so pay attention and reduce throttle if that’s happening.

It looks like you reworded what your mod does? I remember it saying something different. I’ve been known to be wrong, however, lol. Be that as it may, Is there a pin in the MP gauge in real life? That seems dangerous to me and I can’t imagine they’d do that.

Point is, pilots don’t need help. They are supposed to know their engine and operate it within the limits recommended by the manufacturer. It is well known that you’re not supposed to push radials beyond their limits, and the controls allow you to push them beyond their limits at sea level, because the same positions at altitude don’t push them beyond their limits. Not to mention there are situations where you want to overboost, albeit for very short periods. But when your life depends on it, blow the engine.

I’m not meaning to be critical here. It just surprises me that this would be the case that there would be a pin in it.

In the original version, moving the throttle to 50% would cause the MP needle to whip straight round to 50" (maximum) which can’t be right either. If you can find the actual limit for this engine, I’ll gladly set it.

I personally wouldn’t assume that to be incorrect without asking an actual DHC-2 pilot. I’m sure you/we can find someone who knows what max throttle on a DHC-2 would push an engine to at sea level. Be that as it may, I wouldn’t pin it a 36.5 in, I can’t imagine that’s correct. And that’s all I have to say on the subject, cause that’s the limit of my knowledge on the subject. There used to be a round engine A&P up at Nashua, next time I’m up there at business hours I will go ask him if he’s still around.

Edit: Logic based on this story says that 50" is likely correct. While he doesn’t actually say what max throttle will take you to, the author says he has pushed it to 40 multiple times… de Havilland Beaver - Plane & Pilot

I also tested at my local airport which is 670ft above sea level and the MP only went up to 38".

Given it’s supercharged, I have no idea how to calculate the rate of reduction with altitude.
As long as the plane can hit the chart numbers in the POH, I’d go with it.

I like it. Finally someone addressed the twitchy pitch, one of the main reasons i stayed away from this aircraft since the 40th anniversary update. I like what you did with the brakes too.

Camera not to my liking, had to raise it up a bit.

That’s a very airplane depending thing. Wasps all over the world are very differently maintained, some have their supercharger removed, some are newer builds, some older. I’m pretty sure that there are even different superchargers and/or throttles mounted in these aircraft, tuning is not only a thing with cars ^^ There are videos on the Tube where they reach Takeoff power of 35" at less than half throttle position, other aircraft almost full forward. I personally like the thought that you can’t just firewall your sim throttles and I have a bit of a radial engine fetish.. I’ll love to try your mod, thanks for the effort!
