Another comparison, showing what is lit up IRL compared to the pale brown glowing terrain in the sim. Not even close…
Wow this looks really bad…I actually avoid flying at night in 2024, just because this sepia mask thing is killing all the immersion. Let’s hope this will be fixed, like it did in 2020. But the issue lies exactly there : this was gone in 2020, to come back in the sim that is supposedly a continuation/evolution.
I can confirm that especially the taxiway edge (blue) and centerline (green) lights are not visible in real life until very close. The centerline lights are usually unidirectional so you will only see them in the taxiway direction but only from up close.
This is absolutely hideous and so obvious that I doubt they did any testing at all.
Btw, anyone else seeing floating lights as in early MSFS2020 days?
i do a lot, even ignoring the lights floating, supposedly being the lights of non existing street lamps?
Since I’ve worked a lot with the SDK, I’ll assume that these are the very lights that illuminate wind turbines at night. They just forgot to make them transparent.
Why are they not on the wind turbine? And why isn’t it a red flashing obstacle light as it should be. I see thess floating lights at many places, not just wind turbines.
I will add that this bloom effect is not just noticeable in the airport lights. If you get in the R66 at night and turn on the gns430, you can barely read the thing its so bright. They have the bloom effect turned up so high. I think if they simply reduced it to little bloom/no bloom at all it could fix this.
But I would still like to see the cities how they are. I think that lighting is great.
No no. These are different things. This is not a obstacle light. This is a technical light that illuminates the 3D model so that it is visible at night.
Why would it need to be visibile at night?
The answer to this question can be found in the screenshots above. =)
And I will say again that it was just my guess.
Adding some context to this. This is me on short final to KAUS 1NM on a clear night. You can’t see the taxiway lights as bright as they are on MSFS2024.
It’s very important to distinguish what a picture looks like (which depends on camera settings, shutter speed, ISO, aperture, …) and what a human eye sees. You will not see such bloom with your eyes.
The sim should simulate what an average human sees through his eyes, not a camera.
I know that wasn’t your point But I think it’s one of the main issues since 2020. It’s simulating a “camera” with certain settings not a person.
Hurray! Finally the right answer!
This is not how it would look like with your own eyes, I can also make my phone records auroras which are pretty much invisible to the naked eye. Just look at the bottom left corner of your photo, you are gonna tell me that is how your eyes perceive that display? Apart from the close up view, seeing taxi way edge and centerline lights from many miles away is just not realistic.
As a person who has flown a lot in real life in the cockpit, let me remind you that at night it is very, very difficult to find landmarks and even the airport. In MSFS 24, the airport glows like a Christmas tree with fireworks dozens of kilometers away.
I am really hoping some old code accidentally made into this release since we are seeing a lot of the same exact issues with night lighting as in the early 2020 release…
This is what a night city looks like from the point of view of human perception.
And exclusively for the forum:
this is what towing looks like at night at the airport. the video does not have the same sensitivity as the photo, so it is as similar as possible to how the human eye sees. I’ll say it again: I CAN’T SEE ANYTHING!
I’m trying to understand if you agree or disagree with me.
I know that my picture doesn’t accurately reflect how much more subdued everything is in real life.
The point I’m highlighting is that I have never seen the taxiway lights appear as strong in real life as they do in the simulator. The picture is meant to provide context, showing that even with more exposed lighting, the taxiway lights in real life are still not as bright.
Sorry, must have read your post too quickly. I thought you were trying to prove MSFS2024 lighting is realistic. My bad…
Just another reminder that the taxiway lights placed manually by devs (first or third party bespoke airports) have a bug which causes them to be overly bright. They use this manual placement method because the procedurally generated taxiway lights (which are closer to correct brightness, but still a tad too bright) are a mess, especially with certain geometry.
