TOO BRIGHT: Unrealistic and Overexaggerated Airport and Night Lighting in MSFS 2024, bloom too high, light sprites too big, Sepia mask is unrealistic

Also…where are the beacons?

I recall back when flying IRL barely being able to tell where the airport was if not for the beacons.

Much too bright. I am a pilot IRL and the airports, smaller ones in particular, can be hard to see at night.

This is the runway lighting from msfs2020 (flyt mod). Looks super realistic compared to msfs2024 in the photos above. Microsoft, please fix this!

Agreed, lighting needs to be fixed at airports. We should not be able to see taxiway lights or even taxiway edge lights from high and far away. The airport should be a black hole to simulate real world.

A black hole…with a beacon right in the middle!

You might have a good point, actually. Are we really sure that the lighting is too powerful? MSFS2024 has a more advanced lighting engine with better representation of different light sources.

First I thought it was from the LEPA Freeware Addon which I tried Yesterday but now, holy cr**!
Please make the Lights a bit dim, this is really to much brightness.

At places like YSSY, they sit above the runway. That’s not great!

it depends on the Time during Daytime it is on the same brightness as in the night. You would not see that in Daylight. here an Comparison Real Life to Sim

It was too dark in 2020, but agree too bright in 2024. If they tone it down a bit and find that sweet spot between both, then I think it would be perfect. I do appreciate that when flying past NYC, I can actually see Manhattan lit up like Manhattan is because in 2020 it looked like a ghost town at night.

I find the lighting g quite good, 2020 was way too dark. The brightness now looks closer to what I see at my home airport.

You could try turning off HDR as that will make everything brighter. The other thing to note is settings/monitor/tv settings as well as video cards all add to the differences. Maybe start there and adjust settings to get rid of the bloom brightness. (Just a suggestion)

This is really horrendous, I don’t understand why this has been changed and approved

I agree. The airport night lighting is far too bright, and spotting airports is a piece of cake in the sim. I like the new night lighting in general but the airports need to be turned way down.

I fly around New York City in real life, and many would be surprised to know that airports are usually big, dark spots amid all the bright lights.

Here is a dead-on shot of EWR/NYC at ~5,500ft MSL over Sayreville, New Jersey. The circle depicts KEWR. The bright yellow lights in the circle are the terminal, and to the right is where the taxiways/runways are.

Here is EWR (left side of the screenshot) in the sim from the southwest at a couple thousand feet.

Nashville is a bit of a smaller city, but it’s the same thing. This picture was taken at 9,500ft MSL, about 20 miles east of KBNA. The huge dark spot below the terminal is RW20L/RW2R. Hope this gives a better idea of what you would see in real life.

MSFS 2020 airport lights was so dim
MSFS 2020 airport lights is a bit more bright then what i think is real.
Also taxiway edge lights look purple not blue.

Wow, that’s still a problem in MSFS 2024? That was a bug in 2020: You could see the approach lighting from half a continent away, but the beacon only showed up 3 miles from the field.

Thank You for adding a well needed rebuttal to the “too bright” crowd. IRL the airports are easier to find than in FS2020. That’s because IRL you have the whole picture in front of you, it’s not on the limited resolution, viewing angle and dynamic range of a PC screen and your eyes can distinguish things much better. On the screen you need to have a bit brighter than IRL to actually make it realistic.

Your picture is now being viewed on our monitors. It’s not IRL as we see it so you can’t use this as an accurate comparison. IRL your eyes can pick up 100 times the resolution that you could see on a monitor. The monitor has limited dynamic range and resolution compared to IRL. That’s why we need slightly brighter lights at airports than we had in FS2020.

Voted! Those taxiway edge lights certainly need to be toned down. I have a few night hours logged and if only there were that bright :joy:

This isn’t a wishlist item, it is a bug. The origins of this go back to the release of 2020, link below to my initial post. Tracking in the bug tracker for four years, it was supposed to be fixed with 2024. I guess that hasn’t happened yet.

Here is the link to the current bug post. It would be better to vote on this and Not let people think this is a wishlist item.
