Toolbar missing in VR

escape to the menu screen, then resume, it should be back to correct aspect ratio

This worked. Thanks!

I still don’t see the settings cog, though. I have 14 apps on the toolbar, including the default ones. I wonder if I’ve just squeezed the cog icon off the bar. I’ll try eliminating a few apps and see what happens.

Update:
I turned off several of my toolbar apps and got the settings cog icon back. Now I’ve got to figure out if there is a limit to the number of apps the toolbar is able to handle, or whether I have an app that conflicts somehow.
More testing required.

For me the workaround is 100 % reliable.
I mapped a button to toggle the toolbar. Press the button. Nothing will happen. Move the mouse over the approximate place the toolbar should appear at (front left sector of the cockpit). When you hit the place, it will appear. Open the app you need. Push the button again and the toolbar disappears and will not come back unless you press the button again.
Not perfect, but that way I can wait for a fix.

For me everytime I try to update any binding on mouse i get a CTD. I normally never get any CTD during flights or between menus. Very strange how this sim behaves, driving me crazy all the time.

Today even the workaround is not working for me and back in 2D my screen was not responsive anymore while the sim was still running.

So things got worse for me today.

Workaround

  • Hit one time the key assigned to the “Show Toolbar” function
  • Press the ESC key, your are now in the menu where settings … are available.
  • Hit Resume to go back in the sim
  • Move the mouse in the area where the toolbar should be, it will appears, usually at a wrong size, compressed on its height.

But, usually it’s then sticked there till you hit your hide toolbar shortcut.

Click on the settings dial, then when it shows the list of items, click on the header bar that says RESET. It will reset the visual correctness of the squashed views.

This issue is fixed for me in SU1

It is not fixed for me in the SU1 beta.
I still have to fiddle around with the workaround.
And it seems to be even worse than before.

And when going back to 2D the toolbar is missing completely most of the time and toolbar apps get stuck on the screen.

But I didn’t expect any change with this SU1 anyway after they announced VR fixes for SU2.
So I doubt that they even touched any of the VR code yet.

It is worse in SU1 beta for me too. Previously I could sorta kinda sometimes toggle it with the binding, but now I can’t.

Also, in the VR UI the toggle toolbar button binding shows as [?] even though it is bound correctly the main Control section. And the Controls shortcut in the VR section doesn’t work.

The ? Has been there since day one, no improvements to vr toolbar

Lately, I have no problem to toggle the toolbar in VR.
I have keybound the toggle. When I toggle it, the toolbar does not appear . It becomes visible when I put the mouse where it lays.

But…I can’t make it appear in 2D after a flight in VR.

I’m not in SU1 beta.

Somehow it got worse for me too. Now, using the workaround trick of moving the mouse near where you think it should be whilst tapping the toggle command (even though that position is sometimes higher and sometimes lower), then, if the mouse moves towards it too soon (I think that is why), it hides again and then I can only ever toggle that white line with the up/down arrow. The icons never show.

Even sometimes I can HEAR it is open (with no visible white line this time) because I can move my mouse horizontally over the empty space and hear the ‘highlighting’ sound, but clicking anything is not opening any panel.

And yep, then going to 2D leaves windows open that were not even open in 3D, and it’s all dead now.

Also the icon buttons stay highlighted (white) as if they are active/open when they are not - it becomes desynchronised.

Separately, going back to 3D (or for the first time) sometimes opens my plugin windows (LNM and S4S) both together for no apparent reason. They were not open before, and I did not want them open.

It is completely and utterly messed up in a lot of ways. I hope all these problems are rooted in the same code issue so that the long-awaited fix we eventually get TRULY fixes all of this in one hit, but I think there will still be something wrong even after the fix as this is so weirdly behaving I doubt they will have the QA-awareness of the problems to catch all of these different wrong behaviour states. Hopefully a Beta with real users will get us there!

EDIT: Oh, here is one I forgot from today! So the workaround for a stuck/invisible toolbar is to ESC and Resume. I did that and on clicking Resume, CTD! So I am now nervous to even do that lol

Curious what addons you have installed?
Are you getting the same weird behaviour (windows open, freezing) with no addons?

I’ve only had one minor glitch with the toolbar in VR, and found hitting B button on my gamepad clears it to hide properly, then I can select it again with mouse or gamepad. I haven’t even tried the key method to open it as I haven’t needed to.

Wondering if this is a VR issue, a VR/2D issue, a toolbar issue, an addon conflict issue, or a combo of some of these.

I’m on SU1 Beta. I was expecting toolbar in VR would be totally unusable going by threads like this, but I had no big issues.

These are the addons I currently have, no issues with them so far:

Miltech supercarrier is the MSFS 2024 version from Contrail.

Note: Touching cloud note one incompatibility but I have not experienced it (as yet).
I’m using the test version atm just to check it out as a demo.

I am not sure if there are new and additional issues since I started introducing some mods to the equation but for sure it was doing a lot of this in vanilla state. I did not add anything for about a month after launch just to see what’s what, but you know the moddiction is strong in me so I could not resist for long to start putting my favourites (2024 approved only… mainly) back in

I guess I will try with zero again and see.

This is what I have activated right now. A lot less than I had in 2020 lol

Woah!:joy:I thought you might have double mine tops, but that.is.a.lot.
I have just added a bunch of 2020 planes (mainly IFT & Milviz), but that’s just for a quick flight test check.

Given the state MSFS 2024 in I wouldn’t be using any more addons than I am, at a time.
Use addons linker presets to switch quickly is the easiest way to go.

My 2 yen.

If you want to find possible addon conflicts, here’s some forum advice.
I’d probably split them into presets based on type too, so you can isolate addon type issues and also combos of types.

For anyone willing to test all their addons to determine which ones are causing this issue, here is the fastest and most efficient way to do it:

  1. Create a spreadsheet with a list of all your addons. Mark all of them in YELLOW.

  2. From Content Manager, uninstall exactly half of them (e.g. if you own 40 products, keep 20 installed and remove the other 20)

  3. Exit and re-start Microsoft Flight Simulator

  4. If you are not getting long load times now, then mark the 20 addons you currently have installed in GREEN on your spreadsheet. Re-install the second half of your addons from Content Manager.

  5. If you are still getting long load times with the original half, remove another half again (e.g. going from 40 → 20 → 10 installed addons) and repeat steps 3 and 4.

  6. Continue this process until you narrow down the exact addon from the sample that is causing the issue. Mark it in RED.

  7. Repeat these steps until the first half is fully tested. There should be no more addons from the first half on your spreadsheet in YELLOW.

  8. Now repeat steps 1-7 for the second half of your addons.

  9. After you have tested all your addons, please report back to this thread and list any ones from your spreadsheet that you marked RED.

Thanks,

And for this problem, what I do is a type of binary search. For example if you have 200 add-ons, I try having first 100 add-ons and see if issue occurs, if not, try with the other 100 addons. When the issue is found, break that particular set in two sets of 50 add-ons and do repeat searching till your set gets to a single addon.

This may not always work as sometimes multiple add-ons can cause in combination of each other, but in itself doesn’t cause the issue. Those you won’t be able track using this method and in general they are more difficult to debug.

From https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/sim-update-13/600102/85

If OK (& it should be) progressive add add-ons back in 50% at a time until the issue reappears. Then it’s a matter of repeating the process on the narrowed addon set to isolate the problem addon. It’s a binary search strategy.

Yeah I get that - it’s mainly planes though (and most of BBD’s offerings haha). They would not interfere with the toolbar, right?!

I am kind of sick of testing and testing and testing some more. I just want to fly in my spare time…

Anyway when I can muster the energy I will try or at least remove the likely suspects but it’s not JUST me having this problem so my money is on it being a core issue.

Hard to say with the sim in this state.
Best not to assume anything, as from previous experience I’ve had to debug some really strange non-linear addon initialisation and execution timing issues that “shouldn’t” happen, but did.

I don’t expect 2024 to be any different there, as it seems some 2020 bugs have carried over (eg: Controller settings weirdness) and new ones introduced.

Advise keep it very light with the addons, and it’s also easier to notice sim issues vs addon conflict issues when testing a new addon. AOL Presets used on a session basis, easy peasy!

I’ll do some more testing too, but I’m not seeing any of these issues…so far.

Are you on SU 1 beta? It seems to make a difference, but ymmv, as with everything in MSFS😱
