I know I am a total nerd, but once I saw the game, the way it renders the sky and atmosphere I couldn’t resist trying to challenge it with something a bit special, and…
You almost got it right
You can see the Moon getting in front of the Sun disc, but there is no shadow nor twilight in the sky. I know, it was asking too much, but I wanted to check it and I am happy that the eclipse is visible in the sky!
Maybe in a later update it could be rendered correctly… who knows! By the way, if you haven’t experienced a total solar eclipse, please, do a favor to yourself and go hunt one. It is one of a kind experience!
I drove for 8 hours to experience a total solar eclipse and it was overcast lol. It was still awesome. I’ve seen a couple partial ones from home. Enough coverage to feel the temperature change and ambient light to get darker.
That was one of the first things I checked in the game, set specific date time and location to see if eclipse is simulated. Yes, it is simulated, kind of.
The one I saw was near Nashville on August 21st 2017 (which is also my birthday… nice present!) and I planned it for two years ^^ on the last days I was constantly checking the weather forecast for the whole area around and try to find a spot without clouds. It was worth the effort though. Finger crossed on the next one!
I think it could work if they model it using ray tracing. Set the sun as the light source, and the moon as a potential object. As it passes through, the ray trace gets affected and it would render the appropriate shadow..
