Just a little sample of what it looks like when a mix of trees that tries to replicate what we see in the real world rather than settling for what is applied to a landscape in FS by default. It looks more natural and I think more beautiful too. A lot more work to do yet. This is Thirlmere in the Lake District UK.

As well as increased draw distance

Yeah that would certainly help too. In my shot there are no trees in the distance just because the fells are bare so they are supposed to look as they do in the image. But flying along a lake the draw distance issue does spoilt things for sure, you can see where the trees should be on the orthos. The sim should be drawing trees a good 6 miles or so away from the camera I think.
