ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue:
Among other issues I’m encountering in VR, I recently found that the performance suddenly dropped, also accompanied by a sound full of crackling noises.

In the video I’ve attached, you can see that, curiously, the effect is directional; it happens when looking to one side, but not only from inside the cabin, but also in the external view. Usually, this problem persists and finishes in a crash of the headset or the simulator.

I’ve tried many of the solutions suggested on this and other pages, and nothing seemed to work. Until today, I found something that, unexpectedly, seems to fix the issue: removing the fauna!

I still experience other performance issues in VR, but at least this seems to eliminate these strange directional drops.

[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? If yes, are you still experiencing the issue? Yes, nothing in Community

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)?
It used to happen once in a while, but recently I was almost unable to finish a flight due to this problem.

Couldn’t say. Maybe when you fly near some fauna with the fauna options on?

Yes.

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:

Whenever some type of fauna comes into view, fps drops heavily. This is not happening when fauna is off in settings.

Turning fauna and HAGS off has fix about 85 percent of all performance stutters for me. Fauna help with some of the random out of no where stutters that didnt make sense.

Who could have predicted that simulating a whole bunch of animals would be a liability to performance in a flight simulator?

Does this also apply to NON VR flights?

Since you are playing on a laptop, disabling fauna may have a positive impact on your FPS. However, as every system behaves differently, I cannot predict the exact effect. I recommend testing it yourself to determine whether this setting improves MSFS performance on your laptop.

Alright thanks. I’ll give it a try.

I expect that it does, but shows more in VR due to the higher load

What a sorry state of affairs were you have to turn features off in order to get mediocre performance, Asobo seriously needs to improve the game engines performance, especially for us vr users

Hello,
Thank you so much for your feedback! I had been looking for the problem for weeks, and this solved it in one click.
Bravo
I hope that Microsoft will do the necessary one day, but for the moment I will use the simulator without the fauna !
Have a nice day

Someone said that also turning HAGS off can solve the same problem, anybody to confirm? I cannot test until the weekend. Thanks.

For me doing both has fixed it for me.

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?

• Two weeks ago, I started up in MSFS 2024 and after only a few minutes of flying I experienced severe stuttering both audio and graphics. Took my headset off (Quest 2) and noted all appeared ok in flat screen mode but as soon as returned to VR it was there again.

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:

• Performed a clean reinstall of MSFS 2024. To my delight this worked and MSFS was now OK in VR. however this only lasted for about 20 minutes before the stuttering slowly began to return (not micro stutters but major) until it was so bad that the sim was impossible to use. I noticed that the stuttering varied in intensity depending on where I was looking i.e. to the side or in front.

Followed others advice I switched ‘fauna’ to ‘off’ and this appears to have corrected the issue for now. My suspicion is that due to the timing of this issue it may be related to the recent Nvidia driver updates. I am presently on ver. 572.42 and previously on 572.16. MSFS 2024 appeared OK in VR prior to these two driver upgrades when I was on 566.xx

If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:

Wow this fixed my performance issues, with deactivated fauna I finally get a smooth and consistent framerate

Great finding. Is there a way these reports can reach Asobo devs?
Atm driver <566.xx + Fauna = OK; 572.xx + Fauna = KO
Whose next move is going to be? Asobo? NVidia?
The fact that it only affects VR worries me a lot.

The trees where my only problem, they seem far more dense than even in real life (flying over my own town).

I have everything on Ultra except for trees, it’s the only setting I had to turn down to medium.
