Turning off Fauna entirely has solved massive FPS drops in VR!

Just want to confirm that I have been having terrible stutter issues in VR that I was not able to solve until finding this post.

I have a Pimax Crystal and RTX4090, and around my local airport (KFIT) performance is spectacularly good (using DLSS4); however, flying north into NH would eventually produce horrible stutters every time, so bad that I had to stop playing. Some sessions were better than others, but ultimately very unstable. I tried turning down many settings, but nothing worked (including turning HAGs on/off) until I found this post and turned fauna completely off. Now the performance is good everywhere. I haven’t tested exhaustively yet, but looking like there is definitely a problem with fauna in VR.

Not me! :slightly_smiling_face:

I actually don’t think it is all fauna - I suspect is it only one (or a few) particular models. I flew into Goose Bay the other day & had no FPS issues with moose running all over the place. Other times (e.g. approaching downtown Vancouver from the south @ 2,000 ft, FPS tanked until fauna was turned off (turning from high to low made no difference). Is there a zoo in Vancouver? Maybe too many cats & dogs in the city?..

Thank you for the bug report.

We have created an internal ticket to see if our team already has this logged, and if not they will attempt to reproduce the issue and create a new bug report. This item is now marked as feedback-logged. If there is an existing bug report or one is created, we will move this thread to bug-logged.

Yippee! Now that it is feedback-logged, the test team could try replicating this flight from Boundary Bay to Vancouver Harbour. I was using the Cessna 152 Default (but I think any GA aircraft would do) at ~2,000 ft:

Another flight plan where I saw this was in Oman (this was in the Diamond DA40 NG), again VFR- flying at about 2,000 ft:

Edit: Also see another example a few posts down in this topic.

Important to replicate the issue: use NV driver 572.16 or newer.

Not sure but I disabled Fauna anyway almost from the start of MSFS2024.
Happy :small_airplane:

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?
• Yes, Found this out during a group flight and other flyers concur. Turning Fauna down to low seems to correct this while still being able to see fauna.

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:

If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:

I take it back. even low setting causes stutter when near large groups of animals.

Does it not stutter if you use something older?

Yes if you use drivers 566.xx or older it doesn’t stutter even with Fauna activated.

Awesome, good to know

Another location where this occurred that might help the devs reproduce it:

Set Fauna to ultra.
In free-flight, take off from Fazenda Irohy Airport (SDIH) & slew or fly northwest at ~ 3,000 ft to Mogi das Cruzes:

Intersect Avenida Francisco Rodrigues Filho & continue westward along the road:

As I passed Vila Sao Francisco my CPU went from ~ 35% to 100%, and my GPU usage dropped from ~ 85% to below 50%. FPS dropped from the ā€œnormalā€ 30’s down to single digits.

Press Esc to pause the sim, go to settings and set Fauna to OFF. Return to the flight. My CPU immediately returned to ~ 30%, GPU back to ~ 80%+, & FPS back to the 30’s range.

{Note: This is not in VR - just a normal TV screen.}

Edit #1 - I’m wondering if this is related to, or a regression of - this bug:

Edit #2 - Another repro, this time near Mejlan (ZJHK). Fauna in the red circle were cows & Water Buffalos. Turning Fauna Off immediately regained lost FPS as before:

I am excited to try this now! I had this issue since day 1.
Terribly frustrating game-breaking stutters. apparently completely random and definitely directional.

I am excited to try this and see if it works for me

I struggled with 100% CPU usage when randomly flying over certain areas, or even looking in a specific direction, it bottlenecked my 9070 XT which caused me to drop into 20 fps territory, i just read a post on here saying to disable fauna, welp, that was it. It’s not even hard to reproduce, it happens all the time.

I guess the game tries to spawn wildlife over and over hammers the CPU doing so. I’m not using VR. I even had a bear spawn next to my plane at some point, i guess he was trying to tell me something.

Seeing how they still failed to acknowledge the issue tells me they either ignored it or still havent gotten around to testing it, either way i dont think a fix is coming soon, maybe never.

Just to add, im on a 13700k. Should be plenty. I’m now always over a 100 fps with no upscaling, 1440p, High/Ultra.

I’ve came back after a month of not playing, last time i played was on a 7900 XT, now i got a 9070 XT and decided to reinstall after SU1 came out of beta, and this happened, this game has had so many issues, adding this on top of it all would make me really angry, im so glad i found a solution, lol.

I don’t think it’s exactly that. I was watching my CPU graphs in perfromance monitor when this happens and no threads / cores actually jump up or spike or max out… it’s just something really screwed up in the tracking of the animals spawned positions or their animations, or something stuck in a loop that the engine just can’t handle. Bad code, basically.

But yes I am very glad we found a ā€œsolutionā€. So now I have air traffic off, animals off, ships off… just to make it performant. What next?? Can we turn our own aircraft off next? :stuck_out_tongue:

I am very worried when they launch the wake turbulence in SU2 - what is that going to do to our CPU & frames?! And they have said we can’t turn it off (yet).

At least I have been able to keep photogrammetry on. It is what it is - we have to live with it until they get around to rectifying it :crossed_fingers:

My guess is that there’s no LODs for fauna, so even if they are tiny, they load in and draw the full model. Hopefully we get wake turbulence when an elephant crosses the runway.

I just launched the turboprob engine rating certification mission, it’s on a coastal airport, had the same lag issue despite fauna being off, so i turned off marine traffic, fixed. What’s funnier, i set it to low to see if it’s still bad on that setting, the lag was just as bad but even after turning it off now the entire game was a laggy mess, including the menus.

Only a game restart has helped.

I even checked the sea/bay area if there are any ships in the area with the Ultra setting, not a single ship in sight as far as the eye can see. No 100% CPU usage this time.

I really think the game is trying to spawn the required objects but it fails to and it becomes a neverending loop thus breaking the game and heavily impacting framerate. It’s weird it has persisted after disabling everything tho, not even going to main menu and restarting the mission has helped, only a hard game restart.

Slight correction, the CPU was at 100% when the setting was on, it was at 20-60% after i turned it off but the lag was still there. So it seems like something is really messed up.

I’ve been looking this topic every day for a few days now. I’m seriously thinking about downgrading my nvidia software to 566.xxx since I don’t see Asobo caring a bit about this issue. SU 2 beta is on and nothing has been mentioned.
Can you guys with the latest driver confirm if it is still broken? I stopped updating mine since all that issue started. 4070 Ti Super here.
Thx
