ULTRA level of detail can be increased further

I am not sure if this is by design or it is a bug. When I select preset ULTRA, some graphic options can still be increased further. For example, on ULTA the texture supersampling is set to 6x6, but can be manually increased to 8x8 and terrain shadows can be increased to 2048. Terrain Shadows make quite a difference in mountains. Anyone else seeing this?

Glass cockpit refresh rate can also be set to high. It’s medium on ultra

And you can go into usercfg.opt and push your LOD’s to 9 and a few other things as well that make this look glorious. If your gonna putz with the cfg file make sure to make a backup 1st.

Here’s mine.

How is the popping in effect with LOD 9.0?

I really have no ā€˜popping’ effect. Once in awhile the Cleveland skyline will pop in a little late, and when I land on 6 at KBUF there is one bldg right before the runway that redraws even though it looked fine before it redraws. Ill get some minor detail drawing in on things at the last min but its not really noticeable.

Im running i7-6 1080ti with 16 gigs of ram at 3840x2160 4k on a 55" uhd display. It runs fine and looks better for the time being.

I changed out my modem from a puma based modem to a broadcom modem and it has made a huge difference in the way the game looks and runs.

@BubbaBlitz7348 How is your framerate with camera movements? I can get VERY major drops with high LOD settings, like dropping from 60-70 fps to 20 fps.
I’m hoping WU6 will allow me to increase a bit (currently using 2.0) as the framerates are stable when the camera is steady.

I just tried LOD 9.0, the sim runs at very low framerate (20-30 with lots of stuttering) and I have a much more powerful PC than you have.

Is that also with camera motion, or without? Because without you should be able to get a good framerate.

This is literally with terrain LOD 100.0 (i.e. on the in-game slider, it would be 10000):

I got about 5-10 fps when moving the camera, but it was rather smooth otherwise.
Looks oversharpened without sharpening, though – perhaps/probably because higher LODs are used than normal, which isn’t always a good thing.

Yes, with camera motion… otherwise 30-35 over London. But even with LOD 9.0, scenery is morphing and objects are popping in, at least with LOD 2.0 I have 60 fps locked.
I really hope they fix it in the future.

What type of cable modem do you have? Before I switched to the new modem I had very similar issues. PG looked melted and never filled in. Tons of detailing missing etc.

Don’t we have enough threads about that already?
This one was really telling something useful for people using the presets in the game and now the whole discussion derailed again into that neverending LOD stuff.

@Severeeno that’s quite common in games to have the highest preset not being actually the best of all settings.
Not sure about the reason in MSFS, but sometimes it’s just psychological that people tend to try to use the highest preset and complain about bad performance, so reducing it slightly while still allowing tweaking might be a way to deal with that.

I just have an optical fiber router connected via LAN cable (1 GBit).
FTTH connection is 600 Mbit and I am connected to South East Asia server with 40 ms ping.
I don’t think the problem is the connection because I also set 8 GB of rolling cache and I have tested many times the London discovery flight… always flying on the same area.
Pop-in is real guys… many people complain about that, it’s just that others do not notice or don’t care.

Im not saying its not real, Im saying it could be an underlying issue with the connection. I have a 100mbps connection and it doesn’t do it here. And since I changed modems to one with the broadcom chipset things have greatly improved.

Goto dslreports.com and run the speedtest. Ping on this test doesnt matter as much as bufferbloat.
example:

With the old modem I was getting 5000ms of bufferbloat, when using my router to cleanup the bufferbloat, I had to throttle my 100mbps down to around 70mbps to get a clean connection. After making this change, the sim started to run and look alot better.

I then went out and bought a new modem with the above chipset and ran the test again, and voila my BB dropped from 5000ms to 72ms. Now you might say well maybe it was your modem was just bad, but I had switched it out from a diff ISP modem that was doing the same thing.

Your decsision on what to do, but I personally would check to see what kind of bufferbloat your getting if its minimal then you know it something else. If its terrible then theres a very good chance this is your problem.

BTW Bufferbloat is when more data comes into the modem from the net then it can handle, which causes the game to wait for resends for the complete data its waiting for. You dont notice it when your streaming video and such but for some reason this game really has issues with it.

This is the result I got:

It may be worth trying EU servers instead of SEA (I am in Dubai).
Looks OK to me… thanks for your interest

Yup looks okay from here, wish I had that good of a connection LOL…Yeah you could try changing servers to something around Amsterdam, at least from the speed test that looks like your best direction..Good luck.

Oh you could check and see with your ISP if there throttling the connection, thats also a possibility.
I know if I open up task mgr and select the performance tab, if I dont have caching and I do have PG on it will pull a pretty steady 30-40mbps and Ive seen it peak at 100mpbs from time to time.

I agree. Interesting that I am pretty sure that before one of the latest updates ULTRA was actually all maxed out.

I’m pretty sure it wasn’t. I’ve raised from 6x6 to 8x8 since sometime last year at least.

I have an i72600K and a GTX 1070, l have been able to push my graphics to what would have been unrealistic levels in SU4. I don’t think my simulator is really running at these new higher graphics settings. I could not run my Render settings higher than 100 and now l have set 175 and the other two sliders are maxed out. I am a little skeptical and think my simulator settings are misleading at the moment. Yes, l do see a marked improvement in my graphics compared to SU4.

Charles.

You might want to consider setting both of these to ZERO, but be prepared for them to be overwitten back to 1, when the sim closes (gracefully), and writes back data to files.

Personally, I do all these ā€œCustomā€ edits ā€œprogramaticallyā€ in a Batch/Cmd file , when the Sim is started

Where my config is now is where I left off it was running so good I didnt feel a need to keep going lol, but now I just might. As long as the file is readonly the sim leaves the changes alone. I think I want to turn off vignette as well but I might of already done that.
