Unpopular opinion - is MSFS better on xbox than PC visually?

Ok so bear with me here before the pitchforks come wizzing through my screen

So i’ve recently reinstalled MSFS on the Xbox because I fancied some flying downstairs rather than being stuck on my PC all the time.

Anyhoo, I was struck upon getting it all loaded up how great the graphics where. There has obviously been a lot of improvements from when i last played, including better performance enhancing updates from third parties.

I flew, mount cook, New York, South UK, Vegas, tried in all weathers, sunset and early evening and I was honestly blown away.

Now, to set the scene a bit, I have MSFS on PC, which was my go too machine to play this. I have lots of addons, lots of freeware and of course you can tweak the performance. Ive also had lots of issues the last several months.

But i found the fidelity of what I was presented on xbox much nicer. Clouds, fog and particle effects especially looked good, and for some reason the bing map textures looked a lot better too.

So why do I feel that the xbox is better? Why am i drawn to playing it downstairs rather than upstairs? Ive also been playing about this morning on PC, trying to emulate the look im getting on xbox and not really succeeding.

Is it because the sim is locked on xbox and subconciously you are not worried about squeezing every inch of performance out of it by going to settings, so you just sit an enjoy?

I’m managing 40+ fps with mid-high-ultra settings, but you know what, the environment just feels washed out on PC, the clouds feel a bit more pixelated, the mist and fog not as effective.

Sure the xbox has some downsides, sometimes you get pop in and there’s not as much addons available, even addons ive purchased in the marketplace on PC that I cant install, and of course for some reason i cant uninstall parts of the package like the airbus liveries. Ive also had a few more CTDs than ive had on PC, but otherwise im genuinely impressed.

Am i mad? I should really post some screens shouldnt i…ok I have one or two recents (compression depending)

You’re a brave pilot indeed to post this!

For context, it’s worth having a read of this technical analysis of the Xbox port from Digital Foundry, who are regarded as among the best in the business when it comes to detailed technical examinations of gaming graphics and performance.

Their analysis of the Xbox Series X version concluded that the image quality and performance was on par with PC ultra settings.

I have never had a PC capable of achieving ultra performance. All I can say is that I haven’t looked back since making the switch from mid-range PC to Xbox, and am still often amazed at the graphics that the Series X can achieve.

Ha ha well I am coming from the perspective of both platforms, however PC obviously trumps Xbox with the more technical plane add ons you can get like the Fenix etc.

Ill check out that video, may have watched it many moons ago.

Well , firstly , you haven’t mentioned your PC specs , so maybe the reason for your observations of improvement as regards the Xbox is the fact that the Xbox is a step up from your PC , performance wise ?

Secondly , I and many PC users , have noticed a " downgrade " in graphics quality , once the sim was made available for the Xbox ( NOT BASHING THE XBOX !! ) .

So , in conclusion , I would be of the opinion that the Xbox would have similar / slightly less performance than the PC version , as the PC version has been " watered down " to cater for the Xbox .

You could be right about the downgrade.

Nope you are right I didn’t mention it but my PC is more powerful than the xbox. Ryzen 7 5800, 32GB ram 3060, 2x m.2 drives

I think a fairer comparison would be if the screenshots were taken from similar locations - e.g. I would like to see some PC shots of NYC to compare with the XBOX shots you’ve taken. The XBOX PG looks pretty sharp.

can you use developer mode to make your own stuff on xbox? no
can you tweak files on xbox? no

Thought I’d take the opportunity to share some of my favourite Series X screenshots.

If somebody had told me a few years ago that we’d be getting graphics like this on a £500 console, I wouldn’t have believed them. It’s like something from the future.

The reason I prefer PC over XBox? Two words:

Virtual Reality.

When VR comes to XBox I may actually switch.

That wasn’t what I was comparing. No where in my post did I mention the sim was better on xbox vs PC because of all you have mentioned. I was talking about graphic fidelity.

That’s actually quite a decent PC spec. Im currently running MSFS on a gaming laptop , plugged into a gaming display ( RTX 2070 , i7 9750 , 32g ram , 1 TB SSD + 500gb m2 ) and I would put the Xbox on a par with that .

Advantage of the PC would be as regards modding etc and the amount of add ons available for PC only .

Advantage of Xbox is have that level of performance available for €500 to €600 ( my laptop alone cost in the region of €2000 ).

To be fair mate, I remember having washed out issues on xbox before I moved to pc, now I seem to be having the same issues on PC no matter what I do, ground textures especially look worse on PC and yet im on the same bandwidth. Maybe its my monitor? I should also mention im 1080p on xbox and 1440 on PC. If I reduce my res down to 1080 on my monitor it looks really blurry.

Never tried it. if I buy one more piece of kit I may find myself divorced

They look great. One thing I did notice on PC vs Xbox graphics is Paris struggles on xbox compared to PC. London is poor on both due to the photogrammetry but I had a few glitches on xbox compared to PC.

Yep my PC cost around £1800 to build. Oh no doubt the add ons and availability on PC is exceptional, I downloaded some great freeware on PC, someone did Vladivostok and it looks superb.

I noticed that Paris and London alone seemed to cause the occasional hitch in performance on Series X, however the good news is that the most recent SU10 betas appear to have almost eliminated them. I’ve been able to do beautifully smooth flights in the stock A320 over both London and Paris for the first time. I hope this performance improvement, which has been widely commented on in the beta forums, is sustained for the release version.

Agreed :+1:.

I think is fantastic and opens up flight simulation etc to everyone .

In comparison , if someone told me back in 1984 ( while sitting at my Oric Atmos 48k , waiting 10 mins to load up a game from a cassette !! :joy:) that we’d be experiencing what we have now , on the the technology front as regards sims / gaming , I probably would have recommended they get a mental health check !! :joy:

Not tried the Beta to be honest. As the owner of both im hoping both sets of users get the performance they need.
