What I love about this Simulator is the unscripted challanges it throws at you. This morning I was continuing my tour of the UK. I planned out a routine 1.5 hr flight from from Lands End in Cornwall to a south coastal airport to the East. When I arrived at my destination I found the airport blanketed in thick fog and impossible to land on with someone of my skills. My poor planning never anticipated this and I had no contingency to find another airport. No one was any help on the radio so with 20% fuel left I decided to head in the direction of London hoping to spot an airfield. I did cheat a little and used my Garmin gps and managed to locate Bournemouth airport 45 mins away which was thankfully fog free when I arrived. To my satisfaction I pulled off a perfect landing with my fuel gauge in the red… The real time weather really throws some curve balls at you… who else has enjoyed some unscripted magic like this in MSFS ?
I wouldn’t call it cheating using the GPS, I’d say it’s using available technology to get you safely back down on Terra Firma, cheating would be to add more fuel to your tanks whilst in the air ![]()
Very similar story; flew from EGLF to St Just only to be told Land’s End was IFR (shouldn’t that be IMC?). I cheated and clicked “ignore weather restrictions” and got clearance to runway 6. It was doable but tricky. Good practice though, I suppose.
Did a bit of sightseeing and didn’t really watch my speed. Suddenly an unpleasant noise and the engine of my Bonanza stopped; I guess overspeed killed it; I still had enough fuel.
There I was gliding over Belfast. Frantically looking around showed me a field a few km away and I managed to do land there safely (damage was enabled).
I should have tried to restart the engine, but I was in too much of a panic ![]()
Yeah this has happened to me a few times and just goes to show a) how realistic the weather is in msfs and b) the importance of proper flight planning including fuel reserve and fuel to get to your alternative, just as in the RW.
yes plenty of exciting weather issues myself, reminds me of this VFR flight through the mid-west US which is known for its storms popping up all over. Really loving the dynamic sim weather in this regard. Following the highway, all looks good
Oh no, that’s going to be a problem - airport is along the highway right into those clouds!
Eeeeeeps maybe I should turn around…
Okay wait - waaiiitt there’s the highway again maybe I can get there
I see the beacon! Other light is my friend who had the C172 glass cockpit so used the GPS to guide him. I didn’t want to count on being able to follow his lights tho so stuck to the highway
S-curve into the runway for a smooth as butter landing
What a wonderful hole that opened up in the storms just in time for landing

I find the changing weather and lighting as you fly along with “real weather” selected is possibly the most enthralling aspect of MSFS!
Def not cheating. The “Nearest” page exists for a reason!
Enthralling is the right word… Live and changing weather elevates it to another level. I was a bit bored today when the live weather was calm for my flight from London to Calais. The sim did throw me a challenge though when for some reason I couldn’t increase the throttle or apply the brakes upon landing. I had to land in a field and ended up in a ditch. I think I would have survived to I call it a successful flight. Such fun.
I totally feel this. I tried to land in Panama last night in a storm with minimal visibility. It was quite the test. I think it took me 4-5 passes of the runway to line up even with instruments helping me. Fun stuff!
