Iāve not decided on case or cooler yet and three of the 990 Pro will go into the new build, with an estimated cost of around Ā£4,000.
I know the 4090 is a big step up, but how much of a difference?
I fly mainly VR with a Quest 3.
I also have 4 x 20Tb ironwolf Pro in the current build, which Iām sure is a burden as I hear them spinning up, the new build will be solely for MSFS and all solid state NVMe.
Your thoughts are appreciated, thank you.
I upgraded my AM4 system to AM5. I got the 7950X3D.
Unless you want to spend a lot of time setting things up to work well with that CPU, Iād advise you to get the 7800X3D instead (unless of course you also do video editing, streaming, etc.) Either way, the AM5 socket gives you a path to the 9xxx-series (if you choose to wait - Iāve heard mixed reviews so farā¦)
Iāve spent a bunch of time trying to get the results I expect from the 7950X3D, and Iām not there yet. In raw performance benchmarks itās a champ. This sim is āahemā unique, and the 7800X3D is currently the best (AMD) CPU out there for it.
One thing Iāve noticed is that the CPU definitely exposes my 3090 Ti bottleneck. A new GPU is my next purchase. I canāt afford a 4090, but if you can, then I say, āGo for it!ā
As it stands, my system is drawing around 750W, so your 1000W P/S should be fine. I went with a 1200W P/S, just because I like headroom.
I think DDR5-6000/CL30 is a good choice as well.
I did read your journey of AM4 to AM5, thats where I got the inspiration to be honest, canāt wait to try my debloated xml install I got from your thread too.
I do a lot of encoding too hence the 4 x 20TB ironwolfs, I have 2 x 8 bay NASās too full of the other 16 x 20TB ironwolf pro, the four I had left over (I bought two ten boxes) just happened to end up in the pc rather than have another NAS running, as I know Iād end up in trouble with the wife.
Iām certainly no expert but have been building pcās since the 90ās, Iāve been a tinkerer since my first Z80
Could build a 670 chipset rig with the 7800X3D and just swap out for the later 9X3D processors. Really you could probably sell off the CPU for ~1/2 or better. If you even need to for '24.
Only dark horse is the 7900XTX, in theory with the VRAM it should really be stronger than it is, it will be curious to see if 2024 will fully utilize that card. Particularly with the sim being built around XBOX capabilities(which werenāt realized in 2020 development). AMD does not have remotely the software magic skills Nvidia does, so it would be up to the game developer to properly utilize the raw hardware.
320 TB total? Yeah, Iād say you do a lot of encoding.
What RAID level do you run on those NAS boxes?
I just hit the āPay Nowā button on a cheap computer and a 5-bay DAS box I plan to fill with some old 2 TB WD Red platter drives I have sitting around for a home media server. Iāve already ripped 1200 CDās and plan on ripping as many DVDās as possible, then storing them on RAID-5. 8 TB should be enough for a while, until I decide to upgrade so I can rip my Blu-rays.
Iām starting a 7950x3d build but donāt want to have to tweak it for performance. Should I get the 7800x3d?
If your primary usage is FS, and/or other games, then the 7800X3D would be the one to go for.
Even with this CPU, youāll still need to balance out the rig. I donāt think there is a single rig out there that will allow you to just throw all the sliders to the rightā¦ just yet anyway.
It will be mainly MSFS but I also DCS and a few others. Interesting, what does that balancing look like?
Oh, easy then. Couple that with the new multi-threading in DCS, should run like a champ.
Thank you. The balancing you mentioned, what would that look like? In the bios or?
Oh, I just mean moving sliders in the settings to see what effect it has on FPS, some will more than others, Terrain Level of Detail for example. Also depends what GPU you have. AI traffic seems to be the show stopper for most systems, trouble is, without it, may as well be in the film, āI am Legendā.
Ah yes thatās fully expected sorry I misunderstood. I hear a LOD of 150 is about right and agree, AI really hurts even the strongest systems by the sounds of it. Shame cos I really want FSLTL! Iāll be getting a 4090 and hope it uses as much of it as possible.
Hehe, yep, I just use FSLTL anyway, and Iāve uninstalled MSI Afterburner to save my sanity. As long as I can control the aircraft without hinderance, say 10fps, then Iām fine, at least until I know how FS2024 is going to run.
Good call, we end up tweaking more than enjoying the sim. Iām used to that but never had capable hardware! Equally I hope my PC would be future proofed.
RAID 1, so only theoretically half capacity. I have all the old family camcorder videos, photos etc so wouldnāt want to lose them. I also have a vast Blu-ray collection going from 15Gb up to 50Gb per title when encoded, which I can now watch anywhere using plex, hence NAS was best way forward, plus old backups from various pcās still in use, that storage soon fills up.
If youāre asking about balancing graphical fidelity and Main Thread / GPU frametimes in the sim (very important, IMO) then I highly recommend following the steps in this video.
I run FSLTL and GAIST, and some AI and run 300/200 LOD @4k with a 4080s and it runs fine. I run the important stuff ultra like ground textures, clouds, pre cacheing, etc and turn a few gratuitously taxing things like trees, building textures grass down to high. You can carefully cull your traffic levels and distance down so it just doesnāt run unfettered. I donāt fly airliners so traffic is more environmental to me. Key is to keep the GPU as busy as possible.
Sometimes for bush flying Iāll just run GAmod and crank the trees and grass and buildings instead.l of commercial air traffic. Youāll be fine 4090 and 7800.
The one thing I would probably do at this point is run a 670 mobo so later on you can just drop in the next great CPU. But keep your ram at 6000/CL 28-30 ish, AMD can get fussy with faster ram, at least with the 7800x3d.
Weāre just beating the sim into submission, 2024 may actually utilize some of this hardware.
The massive boost in the new PG areas of draw distance and saturation while running smoother bodes well that many of us are already overpowered for a better coded sim.
I actually just ordered the i9-14900kf with a rtx4090, a 1200w psu, I can just drop it in my existing system, I had to get a new case too as the one Iām using wonāt fit the 4090, ordered Saturday so should be here sometime by the end of the week, hopefully. So much for next day delivery when you live on an island
Seriously? Why did you choose a 14th-generation CPU despite the known issues with microcode and manufacturing defects?
I recently had an i9 13900K, which I ended up returning to Intel. After 30 years of using Intel I switched to an AMD platform, purchasing a Ryzen 7 7800X3D and a MAG X670E Tomahawk WIFI motherboard.
There was a problem with the 13th and 14th gen ones but that been instigated by the M/B manufacturers, I now have the intel approved profile activated in bios which should rectify the problem people were having, hopefully!
I never had a problem with my i7 13700kf, fingers xāed.
