Has anyone setup a Varjo Areo headset. Am wondering what is needed in terms of how many base stations are needed and any other gotchas.
I was hoping that only one SteamVR base station might be required.

I have used it with just one base station 2.0 from a seated position.
It works.
Brit.
That’s good to know.
Does the experience live up to the hype?
Is Base Station 2.0 a wireless connection back to the PC?
I am expecting mine to arrive in February and I would also need to look at the base station! I am really curious to see how it performs with my current PC set up
The base stations are not connected to the pc, they do have to be plugged into wall outlets though. The base stations basically flood the room with non-visible light that is detected by the headset and used to determine its location and orientation in relation to the base station(s).
I have not actually set it up yet, just read about it. My Aero shipped yesterday, hope to receive it next week.
Several people including VRFligthSimGuy on youtube have said 1 base station is sufficient for seated use, I ordered 2 of them just to be sure and in case I want to try other things in VR later.
That’s just what I was looking for - thanks for that info.
What’s the real world lead time like on a Varjo Aero?
Look forward to any posts on what the experience is like - I’ve seen both FlightSimGuy and PieInTheSky raving about how amazing it is.
I ordered 9th dec and i was quoted 12-16 weeks but i’ve just been told to expect delivery by the end of this month or early feb, so all being well it’ll take about 7 weeks.
The varjo gamers discord has several new user impressions of the aero:
I ordered on 10/21/2021 and Fedex shows it should be delivered on Monday though there is some delay with customs that required me to provide my SSN number to Fedex. If it were not for that I think it would have arrived today along with my base station shipment.
But they are ramping up production so lead times are probably getting shorter.
…I disagree that one base station is enough!
I tried with one only, and while looking straight ahead or turning my head only, tracking is ok. If I turn not just my head but my upper body (like a look over your shoulder), I get tracking errors. That happens for example when I fly the CRJ and simply want to look thru the left window at the wingtip. It is simply not possible with only one base station!
For me, full movement and looking behind me (for example when I fly a Fighter plane) is absolutely essential and an integral part of VR. Bottom Line: you need at least two base stations! I luckily ordered two, so today I will set up the second and see it that is enough.
How easy things were with the inside out tracking of the G2…
I get by in msfs (and driving sims) with just 1 base station just fine. I actually have 2 bs’s but only turn on both of them for room scale games like alyx.
One is enough for sitting games. Place the station 45 (+/-10) degrees to the side, 10-30 degrees higher and at least 2 meters away from your head.
45 deg. to the side?
What if I turn my head to the other side?
As I said: looking beyond the 4 o‘clock position (when looking right) or beyond the 8 o‘clock position (looking left), I got tracking errors with just one station. Since I added the second base station, all is well…
Works because the station is higher and reflections are also captured. Only when the head is completely between the HMD and the station does it lose tracking. Directly from the front is bad, because 6dof is not possible in all axes.
Ok, got it!
My first base station is indeed positioned directly in front of me…
Nothing beats a Kensington trackball.
Nice TV by the way
My glasses (for distance viewing) arrived today. Two observations:
Apparently, the Aero is not calibrated to a viewing distance of 4+ meters, because the image I get is not as clear as I expected. It is at best on par with my G2, and that is of course not good enough.
after some 40 minutes of flight (with the glasses) I found the Aero becomes very uncomfortable. At the end, I was very happy to finally take it off. It seem the Aero pushes the glasses against my nose, and that pressure becomes unbearable at some point (both the glasses and my nose are normal size, in case you wondered…)
After this bad experience, I tried the Aero on without glasses, and they felt comfortable.
Bottom line: I need to find the right perscription strengh for the glasses. My guess is I need lenses that let me to see clearly at a distance of 2 - 3 meter. I contacted Varjo and inquired what focal distance the Aero was built for, but did not get an answer yet.
And I will have to wait until inserts become available. At least for me, wearing glasses inside the Aero does not seem to be an option. The pressure the Aero puts on my glasses (end hence, on my nose) is bad enough to take away the joy of flying.
For the time being, I guess I‘m back to my G2…
VR HMD use an average of 0.8 -1.2m
Certainly not all of them!
As a matter of fact, most use infinite, which according to my optician is equal to 4m (the distance opticians use to check distance view of their customers).
My G2 inserts are made to this specification and they give me a clear image.
If you check sites like VROptician, they all say they want the data for distance viewing, not 1 meter.
Maybe the Aero is different than the other VR Headsets. I‘ll wait and see what Varjo answers…
@StanTGM Currently in my VR stable, I have the G2, Pimax and Aero.
In the G2 I have Distance (infinity) prescription Zeiss lenses attached to the headset and they work fine with good clarity.
In the Pimax, I use my Intermediate (computer use) prescription spectacles and these work fine with good clarity.
In the Aero, I also use my Intermediate prescription spectacles and these work fine with good clarity. I intend to order the Zeiss lenses when they become available in my intermediate prescription strength.
Distance prescription spectacles do not work for me in either Pimax or Aero.
