Varjo Aero with 4090 / very blurry cockpit displays - need help!

So, upgraded from my G2 to the super hyped Varjo Aero today. What a disappointment! Was looking forward to that ‘wow’ factor seeing this unit for the first time in the cockpit BUT - everything is totally blurry and much, much worse than in the G2 with the same sim settings. First my specs:
RTX4090, i9-13900K, 32GB RAM

Installed the Varjo Base app, set the resolution to the recommended 35dpp (‘high’), enabled vertical sync at 30FPS and motion smoothing ‘enabled’, ticked ‘openXR’ under system, basically what VRFlightSimGuy on YT recommended for his fantastic results.

In an analog cockpit I can barely read the altimeter, yet alone the smaller engine instruments.

OpenXR Developer Tools is updated to the latest version (4-14-23), DLSS Quality in-sim, preview OpenXR runtime enabled, custom render scale at 200% (like I had it with the G2), in the OpenXR Runtime tab, I can see the Aero is active however, in the Mixed Reality tab, under ‘Demo Scene’ it says ‘does not have a head mounted display system available’. Not sure if that has anything to do with my issue?

I reset the Aero Base app, reset the headset, updated the latest Varjo updates and still, the cockpit is extremely blurry PLUS my performance with above settings has absolutely tanked and I can’t even get anymore to the locked 30FPS.

OpenXR toolkit active with FSR and all my previous settings.

What am I doing wrong by getting a much worse picture and worse performance than with my G2?

Can anyone help or did I just blow $2000 for nothing?

Thank you

You definitely didn’t blow your money for nothing. I upgraded from the G2 to the Aero and the difference is fundamental. Something isn‘t set correctly on your system, that’s for sure.

Try to set up the headset outside of the sim first. Look at the image on the Varjo base software. If it’s sharp there, it will be in the sim.

My image is very sharp when looking at the test images in the base software. The picture is very sharp not just in the center. It’s sharp even up to the edges of the FOV, the greatest improvement to the G2. You won’t need to focus on anything in the cockpit directly to see it sharp when set up correctly.

Try switching off vertial sync and disable motnon blurring. I would also not lock the framerate - you have a fast machine - let it do it‘s thing.

I have exactly the same HMD and system config as you, and my Aero produces a razor sharp image!

Once the initial fuss is done with, try 39 dpp and use foveated rendering in the open XR toolkit to gain some additional FPS.

Good luck!

You are a live safer! OMG - what a difference unleashing the beast by turning off vertical sync and motion blurring. I just did my usual test flight out of KLAX (inibuilds) and got almost rock solid >40FPS with almost everything on ultra and TAA 100% and 39 dpp. Small microstutters, but the cockpit is now razor sharp. Day and night! I was still hanging on the believe from my former 3080ti/G2 that MP needs to be on for great smoothness - how wrong I was!
What are your AA settings in-sim? DLSS Quality is blurry but performance is great, TAA at 100% is perfect but comes at a cost.
Do you mind sharing your in-sim settings as well as the Nvidia CP settings? I realized mine were set back to default after setting up my new Aero and I don’t remember all my old settings. This would be a huge help so I can be on the same settings as you with the same machine and headset.

Huge thanks!!

Can someone using the Varjo Aero that flies in airliners (I’m using the PDMG737) share their in-sim settings as well as their Varjo Base app settings? My test flight was in the Black Square Analog Bonanza but the ultimate goal is using the 737 with live FSLTL traffic but maybe that is not doable with TAA? Dpp 39,TAA 100% and quite fluid without vsync and without motion smoothing in the Vario Base app

Not at my FS PC right now, but this is how I did my settings: put everything to medium or high, use ultra only for that you really find important (in my case: clouds). See how the sim performs, ideally over a couple of days. Then, start increasing the settings that are most important to you and test again. At some point, you will notice stutters again, no matter how expensive your PC was. So dial that last setting down again and go flying!

I stopped fiddling with the settings a long time ago, and I never, ever use the FPS counter. That endles search for the perfect settings only keeps you from doing what this sim is meant for: enjoy flying!

Nvidia CP: I have never touched it, For update I use the clean install function.

I can not stress this enough: once you are happy with your settings, forget about them! Just enjoy your flights! If one day you get stutters, better end the flight and come back the next day. I noticed, that sometimes it‘s MS servers that are to blame, not my settings, and the next day all runs smooth again.

Well, just my 2 cts…

Thank you very much! I have now set back everything to what I had with the G2, a mix of medium, high and ultra. Ultra clouds is still a huge FPS killer, even on a 4090/13990 and high looks good enough for me. The break-through really was 39PPD in the Varjo Base app and disabling motion smoothing, now getting constant >45FPS at KLAX. Once all dialed in and consistent performance is established, I will also turn off the FPS counter

I enjoy reading success stories like this, even if it doesn’t directly apply to me. It’s really the best thing about this forum, when someone with a troubling issue gets the help they need, clearly, quickly and concisely - help that may benefit others in the future.

Hey did you turn off vertical sync in Nvidia CP? Varjo Base? Or MSFS?

I had the same great result turning it off in IL2 - suddenly hitting 90FPS and no microstutters even on hard rolls over dense cites.

But MSFS still has the tearing stutters, so want to get that gone.

Cheers!

Vertical Sync OFF in NVCP, ON in Varjo Base, off in MSFS.
Interesting is that the outside scenery is now rock solid, no matter what I throw at the 4090, even over NYC, rock steady 30FPS BUT - I still have the occasional jerkiness inside the cockpit when moving the head around. No matter how much I lower my settings, this jerkiness can’t seem to be eliminated…

Is the jerkiness that you have similar to the stutters desribed in the following thread?

then please vote here:

not really, my scenery is rock solid, most settings high or ultra, LOD200. It is isolated to the inside of the cockpit and no matter how much I lower the settings, this jerkiness doesn’t go away. I know, luxury problem but I bought a luxury system

Hey, random question - can the Aero do 72hz? Some sites say it can, but I’ve not seen anything official looking that has confirmed this.

According to Varjo it looks like it’s 90hz only?

Only 90hz, no settings to change that

Thanks, kind of messed up that some sites are listing it as “72hz-90hz”,thst could really lead someone to make a bad purchase decision.

Just got my Varjo Aero today, with the additional 10% off the 50% price. It was a little confusing to startup, but it’s fantastic in terms of optical clarity! I’m only using one Base Station - was surprised there’s no setup or connection to the computer - it just shoots laser beams around the room?

Kept my G2 settings as a starting point and the Aero is tack sharp all over. The eye tracking is fantastic. I can read the altimeter without leaning forward!. I typically use DLSS Quality, LODs fairly high and 150% Render. I’ll be tweaking things over the next few days. I’m waiting for my Rx inserts, so I have to wear glasses in the headset now. It is definitely more cumbersome to put on and pull off with the earpieces and ratchet type adjustment mechanism. Visual quality is worth it though!

How are you getting on? I too took advantage of the same discount. Im a complete newbie to VR and would love some help. Are you using the openxr app, what settings are you applying in the sim etc… i trust you’re enjoying it.
