Very bad performance on Xbox series S recently- Just me?

[Rant] I hate a large wall of text that does nothing but complain as much as a the next person. But I’ve been biting my tongue for as long as I can out of fear for not being heard. I just wanted to share my experience because it has been very poor and surprisingly I do not see a lot of people who share the same sentiment, so maybe I’m the only one.

Some weeks ago now, My MSFS experience has hit the dumps. They are not a lot of airports that I can spawn imto without black screening, whether it be base, photogrammetry or third-party airports. just earlier I tried to spawn in at SEA with the LVFR A 321 and not a single time did I load in with in with my screens on (even worse at third-party airports like @inibuilds KBUF but that kinda to be expected) . The issue of black screens has become a serious concern when I look at the future of this franchise, runway tears, black screens, and crashes or issues that have been stated to be fixed multiple times, and I have done nothing but grow worse from my experience.

This needs to change because I don’t see, anything changing for Microsoft flight sim in 2024 this game was advertised to have a whole list of things, and as time goes on each, and everyone is being taken away because a lack of care for optimization. I am on Xbox series S and pretty much nothing works. Maybe it’s something I am doing wrong but I do not use rolling cache. I have all of my sliders set to 50% and below I hardly use photogrammetry, and I uninstall the game pretty much every day just to see if anything works but there is nothing. I’ve tried everything. I’ve come very close to give up Hope on this game. I will not buy a PC anytime soon. I should not have to debate spending thousands of dollars just so I can experience a game, this game with advertised for Xbox and I should be able to play it on Xbox. I just want to do a flight and the only thing this game does is stress me out putting this out there the to voice concerns and maybe to look for assistance if anybody knows what to do about this, is this really the end of MSFS for my poor little Xbox series S?

Have you considered selling your S and getting an X?

Servers have been a bit up and down recently with people on series X reporting CTDs happening out of nowhere. Hopefully it will all calm down a bit when the new sim update drops

I started out on the series S and it was fine for flying GA aircraft over short distances. But as soon as I moved into the world of airliners the limitations of the series S became apparent with airport texture issues and runway lights never working so it was time to upgrade to the series X

The series X hasn’t been without issues and while the new sim update 15 goes a very long way towards fixing these issues, at the core of it is that the complexity of the sim has increased hugely since release and it has outgrown it’s programming

So for now, I can only say that marketplace addons are made for PC and occasionally they work on series X but almost never on the series S. World updates are a bad idea on series S, photogrammetry needs to be turned off and all traffic turned down to zero. Then you can just hope that this or the next sim update fixes your problems and then cross your fingers for FS2024

Wait for Sim Update 15 ( ~ April 30). If nothing is changed, then this is the end.

I agree microsoft/ asobo needs to fix this xbox issue vs pc before msfs 2024. Examples are:
Xbox launched over 6 months after pc
Pmdg tablet pc launch oct 2023, xbox feb or march 2024
Too much junk in marketplace
Enhance an airport, stuttering
Fly Asobo default 787/747, few issues
A320 fmc still not equal to 787/747
The list goes on.
Marketplace and xbox need to be equal or slightly ahead of pc going forward, especially with msfs 2024. If nothing changes, i am not starting over with another version only to have have the same lack of attention and concern that we are getting today, especially since paying same price as pc and developer support pointing fingers at microsoft and blaming them. Sick and tired of email from developer product support blaming microsoft and asobo.

A big chunk of the problem is that developers don’t have a way of actually testing on an Xbox. I don’t think Asobo even have a way of actually testing on an Xbox. As far as I was aware, the only way to know if it works on Xbox is to release it and hope for the best. Just take the recent PMDG 737 update for example - the code should be the same and so it should have been fine but when it got released it turns out that it broke the link between the UFT and the FCU

I agree. Go to pmdg support. Message is: sent urgent request to asobo to fix tablet crash on xbox. Also as an example, type xbox in knowledge base support, very little answers if any. Not picking solely on pmdg, but at 70 dollars compared to default 787, not even close to being equal and stable products. Never have had a crash with default 747 or 787.

It will be interesting to see how much of todays dev update on twitch covers xbox. My confidence is them addressing xbox is very low. Even if you ask questions during live stream, good luck getting them to address the elephant in the room. Also, look at how many questions get asked in the live feed, knowing that all questions are saved and reviewed after the live feed, yet future feeds never put xbox at the top of concern.

Last rant. This post and replies will be a good test for xbox users. I believe that 6 months to a year ago, this post that you put up today would get hundreds or thousands of replies and likes. Watch how it does as of today, April 2024. It will be sad if xbox users do not respond in numbers, which tells me xbox users are fading away and giving up. It will be interesting

I also have a series s, and it works pretty well for me, although Im not flying at any inibuilds scenery (they’re known for high ram usage, which causes black screens), have you tried these steps?

From my testing, SU15 (coming in 6 days if all goes well) have many performance improvements on xbox

I agree with what you are saying and thanks for the recommended solutions from @popcorn. But my feelings are that microsoft/asobo need to have every marketplace product list possible performance issues prior to buying whether a customer has an s or an x. What good is it if my x runs a product fine, but an s user spends same money, and has to put settings to zero. That is a microsoft/asobo problem. Hopefully others agree.

What there needs to be is some kind of disclaimer. There is nothing to tell anyone that doesn’t come on here that a Series S can’t cope with max traffic settings, photogrammetry, 3rd party airports and study level airliners all at once. And then they come here saying that the sim is broken when it’s just that the series S can’t cope.

I have the series X and I know to set all traffic to zero and avoid large 3rd party airports if I want to have any hope of the A310/A300 running without CTD and stutters.

In theory you should be able to buy anything on the marketplace and it should work but in reality it doesn’t work that way. But at the same time if you want to fly into Flytampa EHAM in the default Cessna 152 it would probably work fine. Try again in the inibuilds A300 with ground texture enhancements and airport lighting enhancements and you’ve got no chance. Addon stacking is what causes the problems as they work fine individually and that’s the argument for why poorly optimised products are on the marketplace. You can’t realistically test every combination when deciding if something is ok to be released

Thank you all for keeping your feedback constructive, which is vital for us when reading through the forums!

We’re very excited for the release of Sim Update 15 (SU15), which is targeted to launch one week today on April 30th. So far the response from Xbox players has been very positive, with lots of memory optimizations targeting console performance and stability.

You’re all welcome to join the optional open beta for SU15 if you’d like to try it early and provide some feedback compared to your current experience, or wait for the public release soon. I’ll leave the link on how to join below if you are interested!

Thanks
The MSFS Team

Thanks for commenting on this post as a community manager. I am hopeful about su 15 and xbox. I really want microsoft/asobo to win with this game as it is now and am very excited about msfs 2024. But microsoft/asobo really needs to put this console platform community at ease by equalizing all platforms. I know they are dedicated to that, but i am sure that you can sense frustration with certain platform communities. Thanks for all that do as a community manager :grinning:

Id be lying if I’d say haven’t now lol, I’m just worried that I’ll buy it and then a few months down the line it’ll be the same thing all over again

After I typed that response I thought, “Maybe OP should wait for the next Xbox (Series X2? Series Z? Xbox Penultimate?)”

Then I thought, “Yeah, but he’d still have to deal with the problems affecting the Series S.”

I really hope SU15 changes things for the better for you. Let us know, OK?

haha of course! happy to help other xbox users with those steps. As for the marketplace info, the black avionics / performance issues cant really be defined for everyone. I have known a few people on the series s that run the 747, at NYC, with 0 studdering, while I’m here having really bad lag. ig it just depends on each person then :man_shrugging:

What’s your internet speed?

It seems ludicrous to me to think that two Xbox users with the exact same hardware could have such differering experiences:

  1. Different marketplace items that put different strains on their system.
  2. Vastly different internet download speeds.

I know you were being somewhat tongue-in-cheek there, but it really can’t come down to the human who’s pushing buttons on a controller.

I have long suspected that internet speed and quality of connection have a lot to answer for when it comes to performance on the sim. I was having terrible problems with lag on the sim so having exhausted everything else, I ran a test on my internet connection and it turned out that I was getting constant lost packets. Changed my provider and it helped immensely. Still a long way to go as I’m stuck on 70mb download but full fibre will reach me one day I’m sure
