I’m missing my 25 year old MS Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 joystick.
It was the best input controller ever made in human history. Everything the past decades since has been complete junk.
I’m starting to sound like an old guy complaining gaming controllers were better back in the day, lol.
But I can’t give up/go back from VR now. MSFS nails it (almost)! I just did figure 8s through a Falcon 9 rocket and launch pad 39A at KSC. Almost threw up!
But I think my old Oculus Rift may not be up to the needed resolution.
Yea I’ve heard the G940 was complete junk as far as one of the few FFB sets.
It’s always been tempting for me to grab one, but I’ve read even the FFB is pretty lousy.
The very fact my steering wheel is now gathering dust is a testament to how much I enjoy this flight sim, before MSFS2020 I had dabbled in flight Sims before but this is the first one that has really engaged me.
When it “works” it’s a fantastic experience in VR, I’ve had countless enjoyable flights and spent many many hours in the skies and already spent far too much on Mods, Planes and Airports than I should have!
There’s no doubt the “10 year plan” is exciting when you look out into the future of the development, they’ve much to learn of course but that’s part of the ride.
I’m the same as you I’m running on xbox series x also I have had a few ctd but nothing major I do miss the lack of liveries etc as with pc you could pretty much download whatever you wanted
Not to sidetrack this topic but so many have mentioned VR as elevating the sim to new heights. Really curious for this. Nowadays you cannot go into a store and try, you have to decide and order!
I use trackir and a curved 49 inch monitor and certainly feel as if I am on a real airplane.
Does someone have migrated from trackir and wide screen to VR and how did that go.
Have a VR headset for my DJI drone but never use it as too cumbersome and unsharp…and it fogs up my glasses.
I LOVE THE SIM by the way!
In regards to VR I think its just a matter of taste. I purchased an OR a few years back and although it was immersive I just couldn’t go more than 15 minutes with the thing on my head. In summer its even worse. It’s now gathering dust in a cupboard somewhere.
I also couldn’t get past the low resolution screen door effect at the time. May have improved by now I guess but still…unless someone comes up with something less cumbersome I think I’ll stick to TrackIR.
I was one of those guys with the multiple monitor setups using Nvidia surround, etc. The one way I could describe VR is the same way one would try to explain trackir to someone who isn’t using it yet, “you have to try it, it’s a totally different (almost necessary) experience… it frees your hands, etc…”
Virtual Reality is a totally different (I’d almost dare say ‘necessary’) piece of the simulation experience nowadays!
This is a major setback to all gaming computer components/peripherals it seems in today’s purchasing marketplace! It might be a good thing I have to ‘window shop’ online as it says me from “insta” buys!
I‘m also enjoying every minute flying. Excellent graphics, weather, the FBW A 320 and many things I‘m looking forward to (PMDG and Fenix aircraft). Flying online with VATSIM and VR is simply extremely fun!!
I’ve owned wide screens, nvidia 3d vision, track ir and tridef they were all great, but the feeling of presence is just something else in VR. I actually feel like I’m inside of the sim. We are really sitting inside of the aircraft and everything is popped out in stereoscopic 3D and feels as if we can grab it physically. Especially the textures they come to life in VR. Ok so the closest thing to that was Nvidia 3D Vision RIP😥, but even then with full depth and convergence maxed out on a 3d projector screen isn’t as convincing as VR. I’ve always said simming through a 2D/3D monitor even with TrackIR and even the old Nvidia 3D Vision Kit is like looking through the window of a candy shop.
Yesterday, I literally flew all day long in the Longitude… Flew from Salt Lake City down to Henderson Executive in Las Vegas… Then flew over to LAX… then took an evening flight up to San Francisco… and I had a blast!!! Just tons of fun. So I’m right with you… it’s a wonderful Sim… not perfect, but life isn’t perfect!!!
Rarely fly more than 60-90 minutes and I try and use the in cockpit buttons and knobs to the max, rather than physical hardware. Only the AP rotary knobs on my Saitek occasionally.
That must be an advantage in VR…yes!?
If you throw out the electronics and replace them with a Leoboard or Arduino, for example, and only take the mechanical part (throttle + stick), it’s actually a lot of fun. Ok, then ForceFeedback is gone. So, a defective set is a good base for handicrafts. I still have my G940 Throttle modified with hall sensors and just like it.
Not much of a tinker myself, fx. Arduino an stuff like that.
Surprised that no standard equipment supplier have taken this up. ( Honeycomb, thrustmaster…)
Meh…VR Touch Controls are janky for now.
I don’t bother with them. I still rely on most of my major control surface/avionics systems controls to be mapped to my HOTAS/CH Eclipse combo setup.
With the CH Eclipse and HOTAS combined I have about 35 buttons of real estate to map cockpit buttons to.
I’ve actually always loved the look of the dual lever G940 throttle.
Now looking back at the G940…the little FFB rumble wouldn’t really mean much as far as immersion anyway. Would probably be some nice little taxi/runway friction vibrations, but a full motion sim setup would satisfy the FFB itch.
yeah, the one and only good and realistic CONSUMER FFB stick, is the old MS Sidewinder.
There are quite a few more in the pro league, but who’s going to spend $1500 and more for homeuse?!
