Virga Studio Dassault Alpha Jet for MSFS2020

A new developer Virga Studio has released an officially licensed Dassault Alpha Jet for MSFS. No word yet on FS2024 support. The addon looks fairly promising, but I do not own it and can’t speak to the quality. Just posting it here to start a discussion on it. If you bought it, let us know how it is!

I was very interested… until I looked at the price ! :grimacing:
Are they crazy ?
If they think this is how an unknown dev is going to make it in the market, they’re dreaming.

Eh… The price is about 34€, a standard for this platform, you pay the Dassault licence too, nothing to worry about.

Reading your comment, I tought it was up to 50€…

It might be at least partially due to official licensing costs. The AzurPoly Jaguar is the same price (actually a hair pricier) but AzurPoly is an established dev with a positive track record, so I am also hesitant to check out the Alpha Jet until I see some reviews. It’s a jet I’ve loved since childhood, so fingers crossed it’s good! If this wasn’t the month the Black Square Starship releases, I’d be likely to pick it up.

I do agree with Stanlesuper though, $35ish USD is a bit higher than I would normally want to pay for an unknown dev’s product, but for a jet boasting some of what it claims (3D scanned interior and exterior, for instance) I didn’t get sticker shock. I just want to know a few key things that they didn’t touch on: 1) Sounds. Custom? Live recorded? Aliased to a stock aircraft? That’s a fairly big one for me. 2) Flight model. They say it’s “optimized” for certain things, but “optimized” can technically mean something good or bad, as it could be a fancy way of saying “dumbed down.” 3) Systems. Just how deep are any of the systems modeled. Is there anything I can simulate deeler than surface level that’s unique to the real aircraft.

I hope we get a cgaviator video on it! He’s my go to source for jet reviews.

Hopefully the Alpha Jet comes with more markings and for the Xbox Marketplace.

Works on FS2024

I used to watch the Alpha Jets back home, when I was a little child with my grandpa. He would cycle out to the close by airfield, with me in the front kid carrier, and we would just stand at the fence watching the jets do practice take offs and landings. I am certain that’s what sparked my enthusiasm for aviation in general.

So when somebody drops an Alpha Jet in MSFS, I have to try it of course.

Unfortunately, I saw right away, that it’s intended for MSFS 2020 only at this time. Since I basically switched over to 2024 by now, I knew it was somewhat of a gamble, but I purchased it anyway. So for anybody who sits on a similar fence, here is my feedback after some initial trial flights:

General:

  • Impressivly light on FPS, loved that part
  • Nice model - it looks like an Alpha Jet
  • Not all textures are up to today’s standard, but I find them good enough, they do their job and do not stand out aggressivly
  • The flight model is pleasant, relatively stable, but twitchy enough to suit a light trainer jet (my very personal opinion)
  • Sounds are pretty bad for my taste, very light, very not as loud and impressive as in my memory from back in the day (inside and outside the cockpit)

Use in 2024 - IMPORTANT: see EDIT below!
(You can fly it - with some caveats)

  • A lot of switches can be activated once, but not twice, meaning i.e. you can enable fuel pumps, but you cannot disable them (goes for several switches)
  • In a similar vein, while you can close the canopy from cold & dark, but you can’t open it after landing
  • Pitot heat switch does not work at all (at least not visibly)
  • airspeed indicator does not work at all (so you better have a good sense of speed when coming in for landing - either that or you use the optional GPS unit for a general GS reference. Have made several successful landsings, still)
  • No German Air Force livery (the one I would have wished for)

Those are just some initial impressions.

Is it worth the asking price? Uh, well, comparing it with other offerings out there, I’d have preferred it to be a a little cheaper, but with my above mentioned background I do not have buyers remorse, despite the failings, which certainly can be blamed on me for forcing the aircraft into 2024 despite not being meant for it. I can imagine in 2020 this can be quite the satisfactory experience, even without the reminisance factor. And as others have already said, you certainly pay a premium for the Dassault licence.

My hope: Virga patches the airctaft to a state that makes it work a little better in 2024, at least in regards to the basics. I do not necessarily require the 2024 native features. It just needs to do the basics right.

[EDIT]

  • The enable/disable issue goes away, once you use the lock system instead of the legacy one
  • airspeed indicator works when spawning on the runway, so I need to find out what I am missing during startup

That marks my experience up quite a bit. Now the plane is pretty mich fully usable in 2024. Still think it’s a tad expensive for what’s offered, but I am happy with the aircraft.

I’m using it in 2024 as well. I had no airspeed-indicator once. Don’t know why. Following the interactive checklist from cold and dark, all works as intended since. The FM is nicely done and very believable. The modeling is also very well done: detailed yet frame rate friendly. I agree on the textures. Although done well, they lack the latest and greatest PBR effects, so they look a bit dull in the cockpit. Love to fly this plane in VR. Its immersive.

When on the marketplace ?

Any news ?

Can anyone tell if and how the Alpha Jet works in 2024? I completely lost sight of this, but I like the real one very much so was thinking of buying…

Hello, the alpha jet Will it be released on the MSFS Marketplace?

I just re-joined their Discord and just yesterday they posted an Update on the 2024 version and in the Marketplace, see below:

I wonder if the reference to Canada means we’ll be getting a Top Aces version? I regularly see them flying around my home town, would love to fly it in the sim.

You don’t have to wonder since they stated it in their post. “pointy” means the A Version, which was originally the German Version and is nowadays used by Top Aces.
