Virtual Desktop "native" OpenXR support is here!

I have been using The Oculus app for 2 years and I used it because It was easy to get into. However now that I don’t have to go through Steam VR and boy, do I love VD. I didn’t know just how bad the Oculus app was.
Mbucchia, man that brain of yours. WOW
Thank you for your hard and continuous work.
I feel that you are doing more for VR than MSFS.

Im on the edge, help me deciding: Is VD better than Quest Link Wired for AMD user?

Really up to you to try all these to see what works best for you mate. Don’t fall for the “x is always better, other options are terrible” trap. All these work well when properly setup so it really comes down to personal preferences imho.

Same here, I get a black screen with OBS. Did anyone manage to record any VR sessions?

Well, after trying, it was my fault.
Openxr OBS plugin works to stream and record VR.
All i miss is the oculus mirror stabilisation. Streaming oculus mirror made stable and smooth videos.

But it’s 100x more pleasant to finally have a smooth vr session. It’s day and night :saluting_face:

There was a VD update today, but i still can’t open oxrtoolkit within

Thanks for checking again the mirror thing.

As for VD’s update this morning it was confirmed by many users that it fixed the OpenXR Toolkit problems.

Don’t forget that you need to manually update the PC streamer app. It won’t update itself. You need 1.29.6 PC streamer app.

It was that, i didn’t update the streamer app  now everything is working and i can stream with OXRplugin on OBS.

Would the FOV could be modified on eventual future updates ? on Oculus Tray Tool or Oculus Debug Tool, you can set the FOV to 0.7, which is better than the FOV quality that can be set on Toolkit.
Maybe it’s too many options, but well, that was my idea sharing

I was tearing my hair out trying to figure out why I was getting black flashing glitches in vr , solved by updating the streamer.

Hello, with 1.29.6, it’s perfect, finally it works, no more CTD !

With my quest 2, my 2080 and my old xeon (yes I know you have to dare… xeon 5670…) it runs at 45 fps, with a latency (the gain is fabulous!) of 60 instead from 80-90 with oculus! (and if I had a current chip I’m sure to go below 50 ms…).

And without a thin central fov and disgusting edge!

Thank you for the work done on VD streaming, extraordinary.

I have to change my PC at the end of the year (my old xeon is on its last legs…), and I can’t imagine the gain afterwards…

Thanks so much for the work you and the VD team have done to bring this to the community. It’s very much appreciated.

Has anyone experienced VR controller issues with VDXR? It would lose interactivity in the cockpit except for the yoke. I couldn’t operate anything but the yoke using my Quest 3 controllers. I haven’t experience this issue with SteamVR or WMR.

Fantastic work @mbucchia It has made a massive difference.

My one issue is when using VDXR I get a kind of fog over the Quest lenses which moves with the headset. Like something transparent is covering the lenses.
But it’s not there using the USB cable.
It’s driving me mad because performance on both is identical now, so I want the freedom of no cable!

Anybody else seeing this?

I think this is Mura related fog that unfortunately the Q3 has more of compared to the higher quality QPro screens. This is noticeable (like anything if you look hard enough, lol!) with everything on the Q3 (standalone and PCVR with Link, Air Link, or VD).

Personally it doesn’t bother me but I think that it is slightly worse with wireless (AL or VD) than Link because Link at 500-650mbps shows fewer compression artifacts than any wireless options, for me at least.

For me, it’s no big deal because I’m still mainly using my QPro. But If I had to live with only my Q3 I’d probably favour using it with Link for msfs. Always comes down to personal preferences imho.

Thanks for the info, I had heard of Mura but did not know what it was.

That`s a bummer because I prefer using VD instead of Oculus.
My frames are about the same but I get stuttering as I move my head with the cable.

The Mura is bad though, any ideas out there for improving things at this point?
I am so close to getting the sim awesome!

VD is good but missing some key features like no FOV settings, no link cable, etc. I’ve tried it but I find oculus link better in term of image quality and fps in FS2020. FOV 0.8 gives me extra 10fps and I can crank resolution to 4000x4000x0.8 and link@500Mbs comparing to VD godlike = 3200x3200…

@mbucchia Thank you for your awesome work and the new feature!

Gave it a first try late yesterday evening and it improved my fps from 30 to 39-40 over New York compared to Steam VR with my Pico 4, Godlike and all set to Ultra (AMD 7900X3D, 4090). That’s >30% gain!

This is definitely great stuff!

The only thing which is missing compared to Steam VR is the VR view on the monitor, so that 3rd persons can see what you see. Any plans for this?

This option technically exist today (hidden), but with Virtual Desktop it still shows you a side-by-side stereo collage. I think we will try to make it a proper feature and only show one eye in the future.

That would be good. Last night my trainee insisted on using VR to fly an exercise on the A320 and I found it next to impossible to follow along what he was doing (wrong!)!

Unfortunately my attempt with the (stock) A320neo was a desaster in VDXR

Sitting in the cockpit, the complete cockpit was trembling and shaking. Moving the head faster gave short black parts in the picture, paired with strange “zoom in and out” effects. Outside ground looked stable (apart from the issues when moving the head fast).

No way to operate that plane this way, needed to switch to SteamVR to do the flight.
