Virtual Desktop + quest3 terrible bitrates last 2 months

I’m having very bad bitrates since a month or two ( < 20) which makes MSFS unplayable.
I’ve been using the Q3 with VD for a year now with great bitrates (120-200)
1Gb router, good wifi network, wired wifi hub near my headset, checked cables etc etc.
Before summing up all my hardware/settings/routers etc I’m just curious to know if anyone else has had unexplainable degraded bitrates lately.

Using VD Streamer and Q3 here
Not this kind of problem.

Shut down your streamer app, then go into your task manager and look for the “Virtual desktop streamer services” and shut that down too, Try to re-open the Virtual desktop streamer program again and see if that corrects the issue. If the Virtual desktop streamer app does not open, restart the computer and try it.

I have had that issue in the past. Doing the above seemed to correct the issue.

I think problems are related to having new wifi lights in the house which requires a mixed wifi network (2,4 / 5Ghz)

I decided to buy an ethernet adapter with a dedicated cable (15m) from headset straight into the main router and it’s brilliant. Super steady with constant max bitrates.
Bonus: it also has a power adapter input, so no empty battery anymore.
Found the tip here:

I would not think a smart bulb would create any issues. Afterall I have about 50 of them, along with a whole host of other Wifi smart home devices.

I did not know a USB-C to Ethernet directly into the router would work… hmm…

Well, when I disable 2.4Ghz I consistently see a bitrate increase, although still unstable. Maybe it’s a certain combination of devices/brands/quality etc. Or maybe the main router all together. Who knows.
Anyway, the ethernet adapter is a good solution if you can’t get a stable airlink.

Small downside I noticed: When I detach the adapter from the headset, having the power cable and ethernet cable still attached to the adapter, it completely messes up the wifi network.
Disconnections all over the place. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
(so always have to remove power cable first)

Going to give this a try. Plugging my Ethernet cable directly into my PC did nothing for me.
Stutter fest with a 13900k & 4090, that runs my Crystal at 60+ fps.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Just to clarify: I have both computer and headset connected via separate ethernet cables to the same main router that connects to the outside world (1Gb network)
Good luck. :+1:

That makes sense. Thanks!

Kinda hard to believe that this works any better than just using a decent usb3 Link cable with meta link pc app and 650mbps encoding bitrate. Each to their own I guess.

I tried a link cable ( KIWI design 5M/16FT Link-kabel) with meta link and 650 bitrate on usb3.
Also tried link cable with Virtual Desktop + GitHub - Genymobile/gnirehtet: Gnirehtet provides reverse tethering for Android
(complicated setup with extra adb service needed running in background)

Both were terrible.

Maybe the official 100 eur meta link cable is a good option, but no way I will pay that much for a cable.

For me:

  1. To begin with, Virtual Desktop is much better than Meta link.
  2. Physical ethernet cables will beat any wifi connection.

I’ve found that my Official Link cable connected to my z790 usb3.2 gen2 type-c port at 650mbps works better than anything I can get with VD/wifi6.

VD via this convoluted extra ethernet headset connection (normally just the PC) might be better than wireless with VD or Air Link. I don’t know, don’t plan to find out, lol! In any case, I doubt that this would be better than what I get using Link because VD itself limits bitrate to ~400-500mbps.

I currently only use Link with my +2yo QPro/rtx4090 with msfs2020. All other PCVR is wireless using my +1yo Q3/512Gb, I currently ‘prefer’ Air Link, but VD also works fine, and I must admit that its hevc-10bit and av1-10bit do a better job than Air Link hevc-8bit (fewer compression artifacts). Hopefully Meta will add these codec’s in the near future. I have recommended they do so and meta responded that they are working on doing this soon.

Ultimately, the best solution is to provide a direct DisplayPort connection option like the new Vive Focus Vision has. I preordered one of these and I must say that the DP connection worked great (zero compression, lower latency, and +10% better performance). Pity that the fresnel lens and low vertical FOV did not properly take advantage of this and I’m returning mine today.

In any case, use whatever works best for you. Cheers.
