Could someone explain to me the VNAV of these planes? how does it work? I understand that they have bugs in these planes but I do not understand well how it works since in theory it serves to control the verticality of the plane
As far as I know it does not work. In theory it should control your climb and decent staying within your FMC constraints given a set speed you program or that you are manually controlling in aircraft without an autothrottle.
only good for climb? and for the descent?
Hello,
havent flown the 787 for a while but as far as I remeber it works so so.
Have you read through this post?
I learn alot from it.
Hi, I read the post before creating this one, but I really tell you that I don’t quite understand the concept clearly and what it is used for, since without activating VNAV mode I can perfectly control the ascent and descent with the VS wheel and the Altitude mark established
It is used for autonomous flying, of if you prefer, assisted flying.
So far I remember:
You set up your flight plan, check everything three times, especially discontinuities in the flight plan, arm the AT switches (AP panel), switch on A/T, VNAV and LNAV in the AP, engage TO/GA on the throttle levers, release parking brake, take off, retract gear, retract flaps, climb to 1500 feet, engange both autopilots, lean back and enjoy the show. No idea how realistic this is, I have never seen an real 787 cockpit from inside off course. If you set everything right the aircraft fly all the way by itself including autoland. You just have to engage approach right in time. But autoland is not recommended.
VNAV does the same what you can do with VS or FLC but one step more automatic.
In the Boeing VNAV would work for both climb and descent. Enabling VNAV would follow the constraints and settings programmed through the FMC. I am sure the pilot guide could explain the details more in-depth than my very brief and simple explanation did.
VNAV and LNAV have issues on Boeing 787 and 747. I bought FS20202 for PC in first week of launch, both planes worked perfectly when I set long haul flights over 12 hours. You would select route before launching flight, help plane take off, set altitude, engage auto pilot, enable VNAV and LNAV and it would fly the full route (e.g. New York to Singapore). About 30 mins before landing, you descend to about 5000 above sea level and then disable Auto Pilot to control your throttle, flaps, etc. and it worked perfectly.
However, for past 3 months or so, this has stopped working properly and it is very frustrating. You can disable autopilot however, VNAV and LNAV remain enabled and also AT is off but you cannot control throttle on these plans so the only way to land these planes is to disengage engines on approach.
It is sad that such a great product that worked properly for first 4 - 5 months has these Boeing planes giving trouble. I emailed support and they said it is a known issue. The Airbus A320 works perfectly but that plane only has about 7 hours of flight time so can’t exactly cross the Pacific.
We all know the FS2020 did an amazing job, hopefully the get things back working soon as I am really not into smaller planes. Happy Simming everyone.
