Vsync on at 50% ruins frames since Nvidia 546.29

Hi all, I wondered if anyone else had stumbled across a problem I am having, which is quite specific to a situation…

I have always used the in game VSYNC with frames set to 50% monitor refresh rate. This delivered me a steady but very smooth 30fps, compared to a more jittery performance if I changed it to anything else.

Since Nvidia driver 546.29 I now find that setting VSYNC on and 50% refresh in the Sim now causes really severe instability, stuttering and terrible frames, particularly when panning. Opening the FPS counter shows very erratic figures on the GPU times, quickly spiking from about 15 to 45ms and back constantly.

If I set the frame rate to 100% refresh, or turn VSYNC off in the sim, or if I set VSYNC in Nvidia control panel to adaptive (half refresh rate), then the problem of the spiking GPU times is not there.

Problem is, the options above do not provide the smoothness that VYNC on and 50% refresh in the Sim did previously.

I tried the 546.31 hotfix and the newer drivers since but all produce the same problem.

Has anyone encountered this at all? Appreciate it’s very specific…

Nvidia RTX 4060ti
Intel i5 13400F
32GB RAM

Cheers,
Sam

Not sure but in my opinion it would be worth you trying to use Riva Tuner to lock the fps to the refresh you want instead and turn off V-synch in Nvidia and the Sim.

That should still maintain the frames to match your monitor, but I have found Riva to be much better at holding onto that target consistently.

In Riva you can add a game, point it to the .exe and lock the frames specifically for the Sim.

Exactly the same problem here with 3060TI, started with the first driver from 546 line and continues with the latest one as well. The only solution is to use external vsync solution (RivaTuner or NVCPL).

I think Baracus and pwnek are right for a long-term solution. I use Riva Tuner and it works well for me. One thing you might want to consider is an attempt to reload the 551.23 driver. I loaded the 551.23 version about a week ago and had crazy results, just like you - extreme instability and jittering (when panning like you) much worse than usual. I even had problems outside of MSFS and reloaded Windows, but that didn’t fix it - but once I reloaded the 551.23 driver, everything worked again, including MSFS.

In my years of working with NVidia drivers, I have had problems immediately after the initial reload probably a third of the time. I just repeat the load process, and it seems to work fine after that. I’m not saying it will solve your problem, but it has worked for me multiple times. Best of luck.

The notes from this nvidia hotfix 551.46 mentions a fix for periodic stutters in applications that are using vsync. May help with the vsync issue MSFS exhibits in drivers after 546…

This hotfix addresses the following issues:

  • Some users may experience intermittent micro-stuttering in games when vertical sync is enabled [4445940]

https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5519?=&linkId=100000240085402

(I reverted to 537 drivers on seeing this vsync issue and stayed with them. I’ll try this hotfix once I get an opportunity).

Good spot! Didn’t even see there was a hotfix out for this newest driver. Will give this a go later and report back. If not, might try reverting back to 537.

I did revert back to 537 a while ago but I think it was coincidentally after SU14 came out and performance was pants across the board so I assumed that driver was no longer any good.

Sooooo 551.46 does not solve the in game vsync stuttering issues sadly, or at least no for me. Had to go back to the NVCP Vysnc. I was just about to take off from EGGP in the FBW A32NX and my computer completely turned off, no warning, would not come back on for a good 2-3 minutes. I am not saying for sure it’s the hotfix driver as obviously could be a million things, but it’s the only thing I’ve changed, so I am reverting back to 551.23 for now just to be safe!

Just to make sure:
When changing drivers you use DDU and restart Windows in order to get the old driver removed completely, right?

do you have HAGS activated ? l m using aswell caps lock 50% and this window option was generating micro stutter on my end, turning it off helped

From your post, I sense we will disagree completely on this haha, which is fine, but everything I have ever read about DDU through both tech posts and forums is that it is completely unnecessary now days unless you are switching cards, going from Nvidia to AMD or performing some kind of advanced installation. So no, I have not used it. However if the graphic problem continues, I will reluctantly give it a go

I do have HAGS on, I will give it a go with HAGS off, I’ve never noticed a difference with on or off tbh, but wasn’t looking at this specific issue last time I compared the two.

It’s a shame that you had issues after you switched to 551.46 as I eventually got time to install and it has removed all the vsync instabilities that have been present in drivers after 537. I tried 50% vsync (even though I don’t usually use that mode) and also no vsync issues.

I also had similar issue. There was a weird stutters when using in-game vsync set to 33%.

But, it’s solved now after updating to this hotfix driver:

It looks like it’s solved for me too, 50% v-sync seem to be good again

Will give it another go tomorrow, the PC crash I had could have been completely coincidental perhaps.

Can confirm Vsync issues indeed sorted like you’ve all reported! I still get a tiny bit of stuttering with panning but I think I’ve always had that tbh, especially with frames locked at 30fps. Otherwise really smooth!
