Wanting to go VR in MSFS 2020

Hi all,
I’m thinking of purchasing a VR headset and I’ve been looking at something like the Meta Quest 3 512gb version as that fits within my budget.

Now I know absolutely nothing about VR hence my post so what I would like to know and learn is the following:

Is the quest 3 a good headset for the money and provide good visuals and experience? And do I need the 512gb version?

Is the headset all you need and no other software or hardware required? Just plug and play? I assume the hand controllers are not required?

My system specs
MSFS 2020
4070 Ti super
32gb ddr5 ram
7800x3d
X670E MB

Thanks in advance any advice much appreciated

Unless your going to play other games on Quest 3, no need to get the one with more memory. I love my setup. Warning about VR, it’s almost impossible to go back to flat screen. Here is through the lense on Q3. Hand controllers are a must. I highly recommend a standalone Wi-Fi 6 router, using virtual desktop.

Thanks for reply. Is that the actual view you see when headset is on? As the image has blacked curved edges.
You mention controllers are a must so don’t you fly using flight yoke ?

Yes that is the view only it’s clearer with the headset on. I used my cell phone to snap the picture, it’s through the lens in my quest 3.

I use one controller to manipulate the switches, knobs, radios, ect …

I keep the rt VR controller in my lap and grab it when needed

The only other thing to keep in mind is that when in VR you can’t see the keyboard (of course). So you will need controllers configured to do everything you need ‘blind’

For me, I use a yoke, throttle quadrant and rudder pedals for the primary controls; I have buttons mapped for switching in/out of VR and for centering the VR camera. That’s all. Everything else I just use the mouse and virtual cockpit. Mouse can be a bit laggy at times, but you get used to it (and you also learn where the controls are in the actual aircraft too ) Personally, I never use VR controllers, although lots of folks do.

… and I can absolutely confirm this! VR is a blast - especially in smaller airplanes!

I hated VR controllers because of turning the knobs on the heading bug, GNS530 and autopilot. I ended up binding the cockpit interaction increase/decrease to the hat switch on my yoke. So when it comes to the knobs I just point and turn.

Bit confused here as what you guys use.

Can I just use headsets for visual, use mouse to select items in cockpit and yoke and pedals for flying? Not wanting to use the quest controllers.

Yes, you can choose to use the mouse only but you will still need the controllers (they are included w/quest 3) to do many functions outside of msfs.

I have a Quest 3, too, and I also use my Boeing yoke, Honeycomb Bravo throttles, my pedals and have a mouse in a muscle memory easy location to find with the headset on. I don’t use the Quest’s controllers while in the sim.

Thanks for the replies much appreciated.

So the meta quest 3 128gb will be just fine for sim use? I see they also do a 3S
Also I’ve come across folk mentioning different lenses ?

I personally highly recommend. Quest 3 lenses are awesome, they are called pancake lenses.

Here is msfs2020 through the lense

Yes. That is what I have. The storage size isn’t a factor when using it with the sim. It’s a factor if you plan to purchase a fair amount of VR games/applications from the Meta store.

The 3 has better displays than the 3S, if my memory serves. If you can, I’d get the 3, but definitely do check out the differences between the 3 and the 3S to make an informed decision.

Yes you can - I only use a mouse and I have only two things set as key binds on my velocity one - landing lights and toggle gear up/down - oh and autopilot

Everything else is mouse control. Don’t use a keyboard, it’s fantastic VR

I only have an overlay courtesy of OXRTL of just showing the FPS

Seriously looking at the Meta Quest 3, Santa could well be bringing me one via the other half :grinning::ok_hand:

Noticed there is an additional battery head strap, is this a must or is it if you only want longer game play ? Only only do short GA flights so 1 hour to 2 hours tops battery life is all I need. I assume the headset has battery built in ?

All I do is keep the cable plugged in and to a charge in the wall and it remains at 100% - BTW I use VD

Don’t get a 3S. The 3S has those awful fresnel lenses. I used to have those on my Vive Pro. Its also lower resolution so combining those two downsides, I’d say avoid it completely. The original Quest 3 has fantastic pancake lenses. Clarity from edge to edge. Fresnel lenses definately don’t… avoid them.

I have 128gb Quest 3 and all I do is PC Simming (racing, flight etc). I think its a great buy.

I keep hearing about virtual desktop, what is it and is it a must have to run the Quest 3? Also Open XR ?
There was me thinking you just buy the headset connect it and away you go in VR . Seems there’s more to it than that and seems very complicated.

I assume the Q3 just connects to the PC via WiFi ? My PC connects to the router which is downstairs via an Ethernet cable.

LOL, it is but you will figure it out. The Quest doesn’t have a video connection to the PC so it must be compressed and streamed to the headset. That’s where Virtual Desktop comes into play (or the Oculus options).

I haven’t used a Quest headset in a while, but I always had terrible luck with the link cable and the Oculus/Meta software. I always had better results using Virtual Desktop. Things could be different now.

Ah I see so would something like a Pimex Crystal light be a better option?
