What are your favorite private and small municipal airports?

Just dived back into Flight Simulator after about a six month hiatus, and wow - have things ever improved! I can’t believe how smooth and great things are looking on my machine now. I just bought Aeroplane Heaven’s Cessna 140 and am loving it, and am looking for some detailed small airfields to fly around in. My favorite airport addon in FSX was OrbX’s Walter Sutton’s private airfield, but this doesn’t seem to be available for Flight Simulator 2020. I do see that OrbX has a Fall City airport that looks great, but it only available through their Flight Central store. Just wondering if there are any other addons out there you folks would recommend. I would prefer something in North America. Thanks in advance folks! Happy simming!

I generally don’t fly GA, but do a bit with the CJ4 and I would recommend you check out KTMB (you will need to download a number of separate libraries)-

Has to be Mount Rule (EGZW) on the Isle of Man. In sim it is pretty busy, I’ve counted as many as seven or eight sometimes pretty large aircraft parked there, gas tankers, busses, even fire trucks.

In reality it always was just a field where minor celebs occasionally arrived for the TT races by helicopter or a 172 etc. Local residents have got it closed down and it has no licence to operate although the odd microlight might still take off from there…

While I don’t own it yet, I’ve heard the Meigs Field add-on to bring back the Chicago lakefront airport is a good option.

I know you wanted North America but if you broaden your horizons a little I suggest you try LOIJ - St. Johann in Austria. LOIJ St. Johann » Microsoft Flight Simulator Having been there a few times in real life this is a really accurate freeware rendition.

Burke Lakefront in Cleveland, its just like landing on an aircraft carrier with out seas. It really fun putting the 747 down there without ending up in the water…

Awesome! These are exactly what I was looking for! Now to wait for Aerosofts Twin Otter addon!

IRL KAGC Its got a great Art Deco terminal that has been recently restored.

In the sim it only got barely usable after the USA world update. Taxiway A had a major bump near the take off position of RW28.

There is still a virtual brick wall to taxi to the take off position on RW10 that will cause you to crash.

At some point, unless a third party dev does it, id like to redo it so it works. Then ill either take a shot at redoing the terminal in Blender (that I dont know how to use) or find someone who wants to contribute their time to create the terminal.

That building wouldn’t look terribly out of place on a British sea front.

My top two North American GA airports are Chicago Executive (KPWK) and Falcon Field (KFFZ) in Arizona. Both very nicely detailed, easy on performance, and offer interesting bases from which to explore the local area. Out of Falcon Field in particular, you’ve got the Davis AFB boneyards to the southeast, Grand Canyon to the north, and amazing barren landscapes in just about any direction you choose to fly. LA is a short hop away as well.

52 years ago at the age of four, I took my first airplane ride out of and back into W88, aka Air Harbor. The building types in the sim’s rendition don’t exactly match, but the surrounding terrain is pretty close, which makes it rather interesting to get into and out of. Take off from Rwy 27 and fly two miles, then turn left to 234° and you’re lined up virtually dead-on to KGSO’s 23L.

You can check small handcrafted airports from World updates - almost all of them are a real pieces of art. I say “almost” because I did not visit all of them so far.

There’s 3 airports/airstrips I use the most.

  1. KRUQ. I live very near this, and 80% of my flight’s involve this airport. This is my “home base”, and is where every new aircraft in my fleet starts. It’s primary use in real life is GA flying, flight training, business jets, skydiving, NC Hwy Patrol helicopter, National Guard helicopters.

  2. NR10. This is a private airstrip owned by a vineyard. I don’t know it’s use in real life, but it’s in the town I grew up near, and my sister owns a spa nearby, so I “fly” there for that sometimes. (I fixed some things for this airport, and you can download it on the dot to site.)

  3. JUGG. This is a private airstrip that was owned by our local crop duster growing up. (It’s now owned by a family friend) Its walking distance from my entire family, so I fly there if I’m visiting them in a smaller plane. The ICAO is fictional. I created and uploaded this airstrip to the dot to.

Just thought of another one. KSIF is central to several small cities in Rockingham County and surrounded by some nice country.

Nantucket (KACK). Flown in and out many times. In the summer, it’s busier than some large international airports, off season, it’s pretty dead. Flyingiscool did a great freeware version, it’s over on Flightsim.to if anyone’s interested.

I can’t recommend flying around the Caribbean enough. It’s phenomenal for small GA aircraft. Go to flightsim.to. St. Eustacius, the airports around Guadeloupe, St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Then there is Culebra island and Beef Island. So many great free airfields.
