What did you do in MSFS today? (Part 1)

Finally some time to install SU-10, finished in an hour…

Test flight with Caravan in the Azores archipelago, landed at Faial island LPHR, one stutter.on takeoff, no issues after that.

I finally unlocked the ‘My Way’ achievement today, after countless attempts.

I’d tried so many things to unlock it, followed all sorts of thread, web and YouTube advice and it either didn’t work, was bugged or I simply got it wrong. This morning I stumbled across something online that described how someone else had unlocked it and followed their advice, except the part where they suggested using the Cessna Citation to keep the travel time down to around 50 minutes (I haven’t really moved on from GA aeroplanes yet.)

So I set out from Bahias de Huatulco International (MMBT) flying ILS Low Altitude in my C310R en route to La Aurora International (MGGT) in Guatamala City. Apart from hitting some heavy weather over the Gulf of Tehuantepec it was a pretty easy start to the flight. Everything had been set to ‘True to life’ in the options, double checked everything ( I’ve been lazy and used the taxi ribbon and assist - the red boxes that sit in the sky…not immersion breaking at all - up until now,) and I just had to remember not to close any app boxes/windows I was using and follow ATC to the letter…and that’s where I realised I’d made life hard for myself.

Choosing a naturally aspirated aircraft to climb over the Andes was a poor choice, using one whilst doing that and being at the sadistic and seemingly illogical whim of the ATC operator was a terrible choice. I was constantly switching from 9’000ft to 9’700, back to 9, then up to 11’000ft. As soon as I’d levelled off I got the call to climb to FL 180 then down to 9’100ft whilst I was approaching a huge mountain. My poor C310 wheezing and puffing all the time whilst being chivvied along to expedite either a climb or descent.

Finally I came in for my approach with the airport shrouded in low cloud and I popped out from under it with just enough time to settle myself before touching down.

It was the final section, the advice I’d never seen before, that I’m sure made the achievement pop up. I left the runway (when able!) and stopped, contacted ground control and requested taxi-ing to parking. Once I’d received my instructions and replied I switched to the AI pilot who took me to my parking spot and shut down the engines and systems. Pop, achievement unlocked.

The entire time I’d tried to unlock that the one thing that (I believe ) helped was using some assistance - which the achievement specifically suggest should be avoided!

Anyway, it’s done and I learned something. Using an ILS approach isn’t that hard and does mean I can turn off the awful landing assistance.

Sorry for the long post - I just wanted to share.

P.S. SU10 is working brilliantly in VR for me, I’d had a period where I couldn’t even load the sim so it’s a joy to be back.

A very pleasant and stable 35 minute, 185nm flight to Jackson, Mississippi (KJAN) up from Pensacola (KPNS) in my first post SU10 flight. I was a nervous wreck the whole flight, worried about stability issues, but it was solid as a rock. I enabled the DLSS feature since I’m running an RTX 3080. I don’t know if I could tell the difference, tbh, but I’m thrilled that we had a good, issue free flight! Shot the ILS to runway 34L without a problem. Welcome to Mississippi!

Started a tour around Switzerland in the Piper Arrow III. Appearantly the cat is tagging along. He didn’t enjoy the taxiing very much with my legs moving back and forth.

Flew from Sollières Sardières Airport to Courchevel Altiport in the French Alps. The views were stunning and I needed to catch a breath after the landing:

Night flight in the V35. Despite all METAR readings of VFR, it should have been MVFR. Even with 8nm visibility, there was a haze that just cut things down a lot closer. Coupled with the black hole effect, I actually got the leans, overshot the approach and had to circle around. If it wasn’t for the approach threshold lights, I would have never seen the runway the second time around.

A great 2h19m flight up from Jackson, MS (KJAN) to Duluth, MN (KDLH). Flight went GREAT and sim post SU10 remains stable. Flew at FL400 and shot the ILS to runway 09. Pretty beefy crosswind from the south but we managed a pretty nice landing at DLH. That old bug where ATC stops talking to you and you can only hear your transmissions reappeared, but no other problems. Happy to see the upgraded scenery was there and looked great. Welcome to Minnesota!

Finished overhauling the autopilot panel, some displays, and the ISIS.

And the new ISIS instrument design (fake shine and fake shadows removed, brighter colour tone to match the rest of the cockpit better.)

Two autopilot panel designs can now be chosen, during the phase when the Airbus CEO had EIS1 cockpits (and during early EIS2 cockpits) the autopilot panel had the exact same colour tone as the rest of the cockpit.

Brought out the ol’ C170B for a joyride around San Francisco Bay. Landed at the closed Alameda naval airfield, but… well you gotta be careful with the brakes on these taildraggers.

Good lord, when live weather works it really works!

Doesn’t look very good to me. Way too fuzzy and blurry clouds. Not very realistic.

Took my TBM from Ft. Lauderdale Executive to Grand Turk for a bit of that Caribbean love, and then also flew from Santa Monica Municipal to Sedona.

Working on utilizing Navigraph+Simbrief since I finally got an iPad to look at charts while flying.

Practicing for the day I finally am brave enough to do a VATSIM flight.
