What did you do in MSFS today? (Part 2)

Spend the last few hours of 2022 flying with my Marine friend again. He got a good chuckle out of this pic I sent him with my little tiny VisionJet next to his 747. Atlas was what he flew when he was deployed.

Departure from KJFK, you can see the weather is really bad (ignore the wrongly set heading bug, I actually avoided the bad weather)

Took off from KSAN to KAVX in the 310R.
Witnessed some gorgeous scenery moments driving through the mountains and descending upon the town of Avalon.

Yesterday evening EST, so technically Jan 1st! Flew KCLT (Charlotte NC) to KBNA (Nashville TN) as a day to night flight, over the Smoky Mountains at sunset. Gorgeous scenery. I was in the Dahler TBM 930 with the beta G3000, which is looking really cool for a late beta.

I’ve only got 20 hours in MSFS2020 so far, of which 8 on type. I “graduated” from the C152 base trainer, to the C172/G1000 NXi which was great. But I flew into Stowe VT and got the plane into serious icing, which was pretty interesting. Landed it though, with a glazed over windshield, and ice all over the plane. Figured I would need a plane with a glass cockpit and proper deicing, and I lucked out with the Dahler T930, which I totally love!

Stuff I don’t love though! Playing on live air traffic into Nashville and being called “clear to land, number 11”, and then having heavies cleared to fly right over me, and then being asked to go around by ATC. Grrr.

Looking for the final tweaks on the G3000 avionics by the v1 version. Things I am missing:

  1. A way to enable COM 2, or to have COM 1 + COM 2 open for listening and COM 1 for talk (e.g. for ATIS checks).
  2. Realistic procedure holds and missed approaches for me to set up and then execute on a couple of clicks.
  3. Traffic idents and warnings still need work. E.g., not seeing the traffic on the MFD or the pop-up PFD Traffic display, especially when on final.
  4. SIDs… maybe it’s me, but I have not seen a nice SID on the flight plan yet.

My initial top 10 stuff I want from ATC:

  1. More accents and variations of speech.
  2. More realistic readbacks (e.g., ‘out of 12 for 15’, or “22.5, good day”)
  3. Ability to request current altimeter.
  4. Ability to Request direct +2 waypoints (i.e. next after this one)
  5. Deconflict landing traffic better in ILS and RNAV approaches, so I do not need to go around 50% of the time in busy airports.
  6. Allow me always to file ILS from the ground (I was rejected takeoff on VFR when foggy, but no option to request ILS without telling it to ignore weather, take off VFR, then request IFR en route).
  7. ATC to say the altimeter on transition from FL180 downwards.
  8. Ability to request the expected arrival and approach at or close to TOD.
  9. Ability to request progressive taxi.
  10. Do not route me onto a taxiway with a plane coming the other way, or with traffic parked in the way!

Took the Vision jet for a little joyride this morning from Hayward Executive to Reno. ATC tried to crash me into the Sierra Nevadas on my descent – I’m telling you, SkyNet is alive and active and it’s running MSFS ATC

A few live weather glitches, but otherwise went well after canceling IFR and doing a visual descent and landing.

Hayward Executive is very close to Oakland International; after takeoff you have to immediately turn left or right (depending on runway) to avoid entering KOAK’s class C airspace. (In this case I’ve climbed high enough turning around that I think I’m back in it anyway, to do this properly you should climb out below the KOAK and KSFO upper layers!)

Coming in for a landing in snowy northern Nevada:

Took a trip to Whitsunday Islands, Queenstown, Australia.

The Whitsunday Islands are 74 continental islands of various sizes off the central coast of Queensland, Australia, 900 kilometres (560 miles) north of Brisbane.

The Whitsunday islands are a popular tourist destination for travellers to Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef with the area being one of the most popular yachting destinations in the Southern Hemisphere. The islands receive about 800,000 visitors every year.

The tracks across the islands are linked by seaways suited to kayaking, sailing or powerboating. Camping is available at eight camping areas on the three islands. Several islands have large resorts, offering a wide variety of accommodation and activities. Chartering a yacht or bareboating is a popular way to explore the seaways, beaches and coves.

The Ngaro Whitsundays Underwater Art Trail is a series on sculptures of Turtle, Manta ray, Maori wrasse, Coral polyp and a traditional piece named Bywa. They are located in shallow water depths assessable for snorkelling.

F-35A joyride from Klamath Falls, Oregon to Reno, Nevada.

It was a lovely morning in Klamath Falls, which IRL is home to an Oregon Air National Guard F-15 fighter wing.

At FL310 I can supercruise at M1.49 without the extra fuel burn of the afterburners. Playing with the sonic boom cause I’m easily amused.

Bit snowy in Reno! Glad they cleared the runways…

I’ll just park here…

I just noticed this on the DC-3 and I noticed the same thing while watching a video about the DC-7 - the stand-alone magnetic compass is held in place by bungee-cords!
