What looks better, 2020 or 2024?

I’d like to gather opinions on what people think looks better. So many simmers believe that 2024 is a huge visual upgrade from 2020 but I myself believe it only looks better in certain circumstances and it really just depends on what’s being displayed so what does the general player base think?

This is purely on visuals only, no matter how low the resolution may be on Xbox

For me, the MSFS 2020 has the more natural colours, especially in combination with Rex Atmos. Everything looks crisper somehow. The MSFS 2024 satellite data is too contrasty for my taste and looks more or less unrealistic depending on the region. In general, MSFS 2024 looks often too colourful, bluish and cartoon-like. Or just like a computer game. And another disadvantage of the 2024 version is that the new vegetation often does not look good in photogrammetry regions. The MSFS 2020 offers a more photorealistic experience for my taste.

And I also prefer the ground and building textures in MSFS 2020. In the 2024 version, textures look strangely artificial and too clean. Especially in a week with two great airports like Newcastle and Birmingham, I notice that I like these sceneries much better in MSFS 2020. The MSFS 2024 undoubtedly also has advantages such as seasons, but overall the MSFS 2020 looks more like the real world to me.

Both have ups and downs. I still prefer the old one Imgur: The magic of the Internet

I took a few comparative screenshots a few days ago. Left 2024, right 2020.

These are very interesting comparisons, because again its difficult to tell which one is inherently better tho they definitely have their differences

Absolutely agree with you on the “blueish hues”

Though I must say, 2020’s ground was definitely much greener in hues especially over motorways, but 2024s graphics are worse in general

Yes, no question. The green roads in regions with poor satellite data are one of the biggest weaknesses of the MSFS 2020. For me, I have come to the conclusion in recent weeks that I actually always like flights in photogrammetry areas better in the MSFS 2020. In regions without photogrammetry, it depends very much on the region, but here the MSFS 2024 can often (not always) play to its strengths with the new vegetation system.

Absolutely depending on region there, I definitely think cloud fidelity has a large part to play in it too

I think you can also see in your screenshots what I meant by a crisper look. In MSFS 2024, everything looks a little blurrier and as if covered by a veil.

The simple disadvantage of owning a Mac, gotta use Xbox instead no matter how bad the visual quality

I haven’t flown 2020 since 24 was released, I was happy with 2024 but when I found out about Re-shader it’s definitely gone up a notch. Since 24 is the newest sim therefor likely to be getting updates further into the future I would prefer to spend money on 24 making it look better (3rd party aircraft, airports, REX atmos core etc)

all these are 24 with either the sealed sky or spring media re-shade

As long as PC simmers are just fine with it then I’m glad (and I can see what I’m missing out on lol)

That looks impressively much better than the original! Then I know what I’ll be doing this weekend…Re-shade. And Rex Atmos Core has been on my wish list for a few days now.

Here is re-shade off, and then on (springmedia reshade) this one can be a bit dark but there are quite a few available on flightsim.to so you can play around and find what you like best

In my experience, from flight altitude it depends where you’re flying and what lighting conditions as to which looks “better”. To be honest, they mostly just look different rather than one being always better than the other. If you’re flying somewhere with steep hills, the better vertical mapping of FS2024 will help. Generally my thoughts are that FS2024 looks better in most overcast conditions compared to FS2020, and the reverse is true in direct sunlight. But this is my subjective opinion.

Yeah absolutely, I believe “better” should be translated as “as close to real life as possible” as is the goal of a simulator

2024 has blurry graphics and bad texture rendering distance, and 2020 looks sharper and just so much better.

Better in FS24: Lighting, trees, ground level details (plants, rocks etc). Clouds sometimes, but they also glitch out more, at least when using DLSS. On the whole, landscapes can look more organic and scenic, less empty and dead.

Better in 2020: Scenery coloring often looks more realistic and less cartoon. Because it performs better, everything can look better (sharper) because I can run in higher res (VR). Steam gauge cockpits look more photorealistic to me too for some reason. Roads look better because there’s no photographed flat cars on them.

Do you know whether such reshading can work in VR? And does it affect performance (much)?
