In a word; streaming. That’s the major issue with MSFS2024. They have added an extra point of failure to an already demanding program, and it is doing what was predicted.
When 2024 was announced last year I recall thinking at the time ‘that name gives no scope to delay the release…risky’. Given how ambitious the SIM is, a year or max two in development was a tough ask. And so it came to pass. The launch probs are all very avoidable …
Call it ‘MSFS Next Generation’ or similar, hit dev snags, delay to 2025 and problem vanishes. Oh well.
I’d like to say this is nonsense but…
It’s quite obvious that this has been shoved out the door to meet a deadline.
We’re now almost a week in and yes, it works - after a fashion - and when it is working it’s gorgeous. However there is soooo much that is half finished, skimmed over, not properly tested, etc. that the feeling it was all a race against the calender is overwhelming.
I’m tempted to just park it and reload 2020 as it’s growing on me but not fast enough to overcome the repeated frustration at the moment.
I had about 4 hours of actual playtime before calling it and simply refunding. I’ve been watching a lot of streams since (from some that do enjoy it) and many of these issues still bother me:
- Streaming: Overall the idea of that doesn’t bother me if executed well, but I had no idea to the degree it infected the sim. The 2020 content shouldnt have been forced and auto-streamed without any tools to stop it. If that ability is gated behind the marketplace, and the marketplace is offline and will go offline in the future, let us do it outside of that! I wanted a vanilla 2024 experience, I didnt care about my 2020 stuff day 1. And I wanna download the planes I want to use, and stop streaming stuff I don’t, plain and simple.
- UI/UX: From top to bottom, just bad.
- Lighting: The world and atmosphere is fine, but seems like there are common issues with aircraft and object lighting, probably an easy fix (but i did see these brought up a fair amount on the dev support forum before release)
- Career: Sounds like the flagship feature has a bunch of problems, flights no counting, no payouts, weird pathing problems, possibility of progress wiping…list goes on.
- Some aircraft (even in PD) are totally unplayable: Like the PC24, I find it hard to believe Carenado shipped it in a totally unplayable state on purpose, so if aircraft files are stuck a server cache or something cloud related, then another knock against streaming. The Twin Otter is also in a bad way, it’s sad to see.
I’ll probably buy back in at some point, only at Standard though. The number one issue they need to figure out is content control without marketplace. I want to stop streaming on some things, and I want to download as much as possible for others, give us choice.
Of all the things that are broken, this is the most annoying of all.
A blurry ground scenery as far as the eye can see.
Astounding leap backwards from 2020. Just absurd.
Let’s hope everything boils down to server capacity, cause I don’t wanna go through the multi year endless bug fixing again, like we had in MS2020.
Its like they let AI make the game, its horrible broken.
The 2024 edition is a great stepforward in many directions; however, you will face numerous bugs, some of them can be quite annoying. The version appears to be an alpha built. Nevertheless, if you are enthusiastic and curious for the latest MSFS development, and if you can deal emotionally with annoying bugs without getting frustrated, I definately can recommand it to you. I am very happy to finally play the 2024 edition; nevertheless, they probably would have sold it better as an “early access” version.
Oh where to start, it is such a mess. They copy/pasted a whole bunch of code from 2020 and that is very clear to see. Just look at the home cockpit option which is supposed to not render the cockpit and just give the view from the front of the aircraft, it never worked in 2020 and it is exactly the same in 2024.
There are so many bugs it’s actually hard to know where they could even start to fix them, loading in with blurry textures, the cache doesn’t work properly, for me it doesn’t work at all stuck at 0.0GB and cant change the location of it.
Most of the aircraft are in a worse state than they were in 2020 at the start. ATC is a mess.
A lot of stuff they said we were getting isn’t in it all. They recently said new car models were made but I still see the same road vehicles as in 2020. The map data is still 10 years or more old.
It probably would have been easier and less hassle to just update 2020 with the ground detail and 3D trees and improve the game engine to allow better performance but they couldn’t charge for that so we got a new game, and I say game because at the moment it doesn’t feel like a sim.
Exactly man
For me, the simulator works perfectly! The first 2-3 days were rough, but after a reinstall, everything’s been running flawlessly. I’m absolutely loving it. The differences from MSFS2020 are crystal clear: the planes behave more realistically, the graphics are better (sometimes they completely blow me away), the sense of speed is much more pronounced, I really like the menus, and the career mode is outstanding—super engaging. The issues I’ve experienced, like objects popping in randomly, seem to be more about the servers struggling with traffic. I haven’t had a single CTD since those first few days, and I’ve spent countless hours in the sim already.
It does have one thing going for it; no other sim makes you feel like Tom Cruise every time you fire it up;
“Your mission tonight, should you choose to accept it, make ‘Toggle drone camera’ work correctly…”
That was a weird one I agree!
The sheer number of stupid bugs in things that worked perfectly fine on 2020 and are now unnecessarily broken on 2024 is astonishing.
So for toggle drone cam, when I mapped that onto my controls and pressed the button it flicked into and out of drone cam with just one normal press. A slightly longer press and it flicked in and out multiple times. It didn’t ever do that in 2020.
So I had to edit the binding to make it activate on release only. It solved the problem but 2020 didn’t need that, mapped to the same button, so why the pointless breakage?
There’s huge numbers of these tiny things that are worse than before, can be worked around but are just annoying.
I’d like to disable those ugly cars. But now there’s no option for car traffic.
Exactly. It all suggests that they got it up and running and then simply ran out of time to refine it and tune it.
About six months worth of time…
Its fantastic… sure some compatible issues but on the whole I love it. Don’t bother with negative comments. The graphics are amazing. Make sure you have a good rig though
If they just put the sim on a subscription and done incremental updates most people who use the sim would likely subscribe to it for a reasonable price.
Graphics is only one part of it though. There are so many other issues that make the game unplayable in most parts. The amount of bugs is unbelievable
Ive been able to be successful with MSFS 2024 load 1 time in last 8 days.
Took a little less than 2 hours.
Was able to see the fly now graphic.
Then the cessna 172 airplane and internal cockpit view.
Outside scenary was black.
The tail dragger sky rocket media plane, then the gamebox game studios graphic, loading graphic that disappears at 63%.
All black after this.
Using PC thru Xbox.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
