I hope there are landing challenges like landing on a rugged mountain top. A helipad in windy conditions… I hope they have challenges like transporting people like a medical pickup/drop off. How about those heavy lifting helicopters?

As a broadcast engineer, we had to take helicopters to the mountain tops in snowstorms at night to fix the transmitters… those pilots were awesome…all military and many medivac pilots.

I have vague recollections, possibly flawed, of a challenge in FSX, or earlier version, where one needed to land a helicopter on the back of a moving private yacht, just off the coast.
Again, IIRC, I think that was after flying through square hoops, following a path inland and then back to the ocean.
I’m not normally creative, so i am very unlikely to have made this up.
Maybe Asobo will add something similar when the helicopters are “introduced”???
LOL, when you get old, that can happen, where 40 years ago seems just like yesterday and you can’t actually remember what actually did happen yesterday, so you might well be right.
Here’s an idea, given the current regularity of bush/forest fires, maybe have fire-fighting challenges, with a bucket that you need to lower into a body of water and then drop it onto the fire.
Maybe someone will invent a RL drone big enough to do the same thing and then they’d have a load of remote pilots ready to go.
Also a fun one might be a search helicopter, looking for a vehicle, a robber, a missing person, fallen debris from a satellite or who knows what. Maybe give a time limit to find the whatever…
Here’s one for you, you take a heli then you hang a 10-15 ft set of spinning blades from underneath it, then you lift off, and fly between the high tension power line and the tree’s and trim the trees with the spinning gang buzz saws hanging from underneath. Good fun I tell ya what oh and make it kind of windy it makes for an even better challenge. I got to work with these people that do this for a living, I got to go for a couple of rides, and if I was 30 years younger I would run away and learn to do that for a living…
First and foremost I hope Asobo do a good job of simulating the physics of helicopter flight and provide us with sound and believable helicopter behaviour. Ground effect, translational lift, torque etc. It would be a tragedy if it was like FSX quite frankly. I am hopeful.
Thing is without the above no challenges will be truly well, challenging.
I would rather suspect going by the vid Asobo/MS released showing helicopters that is it likely there would be a challenge to land on a oil rig.
A lot of what has already been mentioned is available now with the expansion for the HPG 145. I.e.fire fighting and medivac type missions.
If I recall correctly, physical realism wasn’t the top priority in this very mission - the yacht was speeding up and slowing down at will and doing impossible turns. But I managed to complete it! About the Red Bull Air Races, though…
There was no real physical realism for helicopter flight to speak of in FSX. Not until the Dodosim Bell 206 was released, and I cannot even remember another helicopter that really came close to that for FSX.
It will be interesting to see how well Asobo do for MSFS. We already have a good Bell 407 in XP to compare to when helicopters are officially supported in MSFS.
I think helicopter flight is still hard to simulate. CFD might improve it and I’m looking forward to it. However, with my (mostly) joystick-flying, I don’t think I will really be able to appreciate Asobo’s efforts and keep heliflying to a minimum…
However, I added the word “physical” for a reason: Realism was toned down in other missions as well and they were quite enjoyable. I think of the UFOs in the Area 51 shuttle flight, the James Bond style hidden island, or the haunted Maya temple… Good times were being had.
The Hyper Performance Group Airbus H145 payware helicopter that is already available for MSFS. As I understand it uses an external flight model. It is not bad, but very easy to fly really. I suspect that is largely a combination of current limitations for helicopters in MSFS and a modern helicopter that has systems to aid the pilot and reduce the workload. Nothing wrong in that but it does make it easy to control and fly.
