Where is the best way to purchase legitimately an older version of flight simulator (4.0 or less)?

Where to go and what to look for and avoid being scammed? I want to experience the old times and how it compares with now.

Well you can try eBay, but I know of a FS98 MS DOS version in our local habitat store, which I almost purchased. If you want FSX, then eBay would be your best bet. GameStop does not handle it, only play station, and the like type. Look in thrift stores as well, since the employees do not know mostly what it is, it will be in the CD area.

If FSX is your goal, then make sure you get the two service packs issued for it. Just search internet for them. Process is install game, register it with code in box, install SP1, then restart and SP2. You also might need to run KB-928080 so machine can run it. Search for installing FSX here, I posted a long sequence so it will run. Lots of websites have tons of free planes and scenery for FSX and it’s still going strong. I had it on PC, but rebuilt it and have not reinstalled it. Happy Flying.

you already have it:

Just go to ebay with the following link: Flight simulator 4.0 for sale | eBay
This link is for FS40 on a 5.25 floppy if you want real vintage and have something to run it on.
I had a nice TRS80 Model 4 but sold it.
This will get you started in y our search.
fs40

Yes FSX SE he best FSX:

Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition en Steam (steampowered.com)

Aren’t really old versions available on myabandonware? Not sure what the copyright implications are there - up to the user to decide (for instance, I own the software, but the disks are unusable). Hook ‘em up to DOSBox and away you go! I did this just before the Easter egg was released in MSFS. It was very nostalgic.

Welcome to the murky waters of abandonware, where you can’t buy the product from a vendor anymore and downloading it for free is still considered illegal due to copyright.

But obtaining the product is only half your problem, since running pre-'95 titles on today’s operating systems is pretty much impossible without some sort of patch/emulator.

I wish you luck. If there is a demand for it, maybe Microsoft will go a bit further than just a flimsy in-game emulator within MFS.

The Easter Egg is most likely essentially this:
