Which are your "Top favourite Cities/Places" with the best Photogrammetry to fly in? MSFS2024 + MSFS2020 LIST

I don’t know if I am not seeing things correctly, but I thinik you may be getting a bit carried away :joy:

Not for me. It’s not BAD (mainly as the terrain and surroundings are nice) but the quality is quite low and as you say the arera it covers is a bit lame. Also not much in terms of variety in architecture and a really small centre (no fault of the PG haha!). I noticed at the northern edge when it goes to autogen, there is some weirdness going on with a load of houses floating on nothing.

No way for me it’s a 7 at best. There is really bad LOD switching, it looked really quite bad for me and the size is TINY compared to others.

Oh I see you revised the score - yeah, that is more like it but I would go lower. No redeeming features for me - sorry to anyone from Notingham!

Maybe I needed to fly over a bit more but I usually don’t have to (900Mbit connection).

Derby is a BIT better (more intersting city, and a bit cleaner PG) but I still have the terrible LOD snapping, especially on the tree monstrosities. 8 or 9 at best for me.

It is likely. The data they have at source (stored somewhere, what they generate the sim graphics from) is higher quality than they “allow it to be” in the game, I guess due to trying to streamline their bandwidth usage. But it is very possible to go back to the orginal sourcce data and regenerate at a higher quality if they wanted to.

I didn’t think the 2020 and 2024 data was different though - I thought they said it was all shared? I think just the blending to the rest of (non PG) errain is better now but no idea really.

Agreed, think I might have got a bit carried away what with the happy memories of my first flights there in FS2020 and what with FS2024 looking that much better then it’s predecessor. So it’ll not be rated at 12/15, so it’ll probably score a 8/15.
I appreciate the input as I alone can’t rate everything and everyone’s standards are different so it does give a more accurate rating.

That’s a strange one. On my system Nottingham looks better then Derby, less LOD switching and much better looking PG, but as you say I did get carried away there with those two, as I looked at them again in FS2020 and they both look BAD!

So both will get rated at 6 or 7/15. That might well change if they improve in the future.

Agree with you there too. Had a good look at Salt Lake City in FS2020. There are a few issues with rivers and some trees in buildings that aren’t present in FS2024 and as you say FS2024 does a much better job of blending the non PG mainly due to the fact that the autogen buildings look much better and Micro/Asobo got the lighting and colours right. The PG data is the same though just MS2024 does a better job with it.

Appreciate your input as always :+1:

Thank you so much for creating this PG rated list!

I usually fly bush trips, but with none in 2024 yet, I was looking for some direction, as career mode only briefly appealed to me.

Checked out Cadiz as suggested and blew me away with Quest 3 and DLSS 4. Off to Rotterdam next.

As this list develops, might it be an idea to include some history and types of industry for each city, which we can look out for?

Appreciate it. I miss the bush trips from MSFS2020 wish they were in MSFS2024 but bush flying in MSFS2024 is incredible and it’s hard to go back to MSFS2020.

Cadiz is truly amazing. So are a lot on of them on the List.

That is a brilliant idea! Thank you for suggesting that. I will start to implement that on the next List Update which will be very soon.

Enjoy Rotterdam it’s brillant. Currently I’m addicted to Denver, Co & Salt Lake City, Ut U.S.A at the minute. :helicopter: :ga_plane:

Spent a good part of the day Manual Caching Denver & Salt Lake City in MSFS2020 (not done that for quite a while & miss it - Bring back Manual Caching to MSFS2024) and the results were interesting.

Denver was approximately 40GB and Salt Lake City was 12GB! which is quite a difference to similar size places I’ve cached in the past. Now Las Vegas was 120GB and Barcelona was 250GB.

The other thing I thought of, what with the unannounced PG updates rolled out by Micro/Asobo, was that if I have cached a place (in MSFS2020) and it gets updated then would my old data cause issues with PG or would it work fine and potentially I could have an “historical” version of the place which would be amazing in my eyes.

My “old” version of Barcelona has nice trees better then the latest one. I think I might need to do some testing and possibly Manual Cache Barcelona again to compare download sizes and see how they run.
Results will be posted on here soon.

Find myself falling back in love with MSFS2020 only because the Live traffic works nicely and the ATC isn’t as broken and it runs perfectly on my system with everything on Ultra and not forgetting a Manual Cache that works!

I think Naples is the best photogrammetry area in the game on the whole, some may have very slightly sharper photogrammetry but it’s still great, it’s a beautiful city, the area is absolutely massive (a lot bigger than the L it’s rated), diverse with large hills and stuff, great varied coast, the photogrammetry area extends to the outskirts of the city with paddocks and farmland. I know it’s already got the highest rating but if anyone hasn’t flown there make sure you do. If anyone thinks anywhere is better, let me know!

Rome, Italy! It is my favourite at the moment. Fascinating city, massive PG area in every direction and some nice handmade POI’s. Easy reach to other PG cities if you want to travel between. All of Italy is lush!

Don’t see Marseille, France on the 2020 list.

Small area very nice PG imo, only anomaly I see are many underwater boats in one inlet.

Now we have a week of arctic WX coming, lows below 0F and highs around 10 for several days. And more snow!

I think you’re right there.

Thanks for noticing that the size of the area is bigger than what I’ve put on the List. It’ll be corrected this next update over this weekend.

You’re absolutely correct there. Thanks, this is one that getting added to the List. I’ve only looked at it in MSFS2024 and it’s nice! Shame it’s such a small area but the PG quality is very nice and clean. Those little rocky islands just off the coast are STUNNING in FS24! There’s a castle and lighthouse on one and it’s just so so good. Not checked it out in FS20 yet, somehow I don’t think those islands are going to look half as good.

Nice find mate. Think this one gets a rating of either 11/15 or 10/15 in MSFS2024 will test it in MSFS2020 now. It would have got a much higher rating had the PG area been bigger.

Was flying in Nice + Monte Carlo, France earlier and I must say for some reason it’s looking nice on my system. Noticed it’s not rated yet in MSFS2024 so a bit more flying there and it’ll get rated. It definitely rates higher then the current 10/15 in MSFS2020 and I’m sure the PG has been extended further but I could be wrong.

Just wish Micro/Asobo would re-do the PG for Paris soon!

Edit. Those islands off the coast of Marseille are just as good in MSFS2020!

You’re right about those small rocky islands! Les Iles is full of ruins!

The ones to the south look fairly bland but these are excellent, thanks for spotting something I flew right past, mate

How does this thread works? Is the start post alltered when some ranking change?
Just curious where to find the latest up to date ranking. Looking for the best scenery to do a free flight and explore msfs 2024

I have been trying out some of the top rated PG areas and have to agree, Rome is by far the best so far.

It’s not just the PG which is obviously fantastic and runs well but also the fact it still looks great even if you are super low and what I really love is that the POIs seamlessly fits in with the PG and don’t stand out like a sore thumb like a lot of them.

I remember Italy also being a dark horse in 2020 too.

The question is how is this area so well done and others not as well??

The lighting is obviously going to be very good in this part of the world but that also applies to lots of other areas too.

If I previously had to put money on it I would have guessed Bordeaux (Asobo) or Washington/ Seattle (Microsoft) would have been stand out areas so Rome & Italy just feels very random!! lol

Maybe Italy was done more recently so has benefited from technological advancements? I don’t know but I agree it’s a bit bizarre that it’s some of the best in the game.

It is not the best quality, but overall I enjoy exploring this city and area the most.

But yea, I think all the most recent stuff is significantly better than the Pre New Zealand WU content. They must have some new techniques to make it cleaner and still not over-heavy in terms of optimisation. They hopefully will re-do the older cities at some point!

All of Italy, Spain, Eastern Europe WU’s and Washington (mainly due to the MASSIVE area) are very good on the whole.

G and G. Where is actual list with best pg there is??

Go to the first post, scroll to the end of that and click the SOLUTION link (post #number). That will always lead to the most recent update.

Sorry been away from my PC all day. Thanks @Baracus250 & @SealedPaladin73 for answering folks. Didn’t have time this weekend to do an update but it’ll be done very soon.

As for folks asking how recent the List is? I’ll put the current date when the List gets updated at the top of the List next time. If a place has it’s rating changed the entire list will be as of that date.

They still look way better in MSFS2024 though

Had a quick flight in Port-Vendres, France again last night and it looks amazing in MSFS2024, shame its such a small area.

New PG place found!

Take off from KPRC Earnest Lovefield Head towards Prescot Valley. This is in MSFS2024. The PG is nice! But even better are the dams and the rocky outcrops! Wow! It’s not a large area and non PG is blended okay. Need to explore this place more! It’s gorgeous!

It’s nice to find these little gems. Thanks Micro/Asobo for adding this place :+1:

Back to flying :ga_plane: :helicopter:

EDIT. Just paused the sim to type this. This place is incredible in a chopper! The hills are stunning! This easily rates 15/15. No question about it!

EDIT. It is a large area and a pretty diverse incredible landscape.
This is going to be one of my favourite places to fly! It’s incredible how good MSFS20204 looks! Hopefully it looks as good in MSFS2020.
