Who thinks the new UI is an improvement?

Genuine question. As a PC & VR user I think it’s a disaster for both plane selection and increased menu footsie to access the VR graphics over 2020 (why on earth are the graphics settings not the first thing you see when you click VR?). Seems more form over function.

Many may think otherwise. Just interested in what other people think and if users from the platform we shall not name think it’s an improvement over 2020? :slightly_smiling_face:

Big no. Though I’m mainly using 2024 now the UI is one area that is like a breath of fresh air when I use 2020. The new one is utterly terrible in pretty much every way.

I’ve noticed for a while now that Microsobo is moving towards displaying everything like on tablets and phones – icons, icons, icons – and I’m not a fan of it. The same goes for Windows 11 which is why I don’t like it too.

I agree with you that the UI can be way better. It feels like 2024 is built for consoles. The 2020 UI was not perfect either but it is better. I hope they improve or change that up over time.

The new UI is designed to make it easier to use with an Xbox controller.

If you’re on PC using a mouse then it’s extremely clunky but works…after a fashion…. and yes, compared to the 2020 UI it’s a step backward for PC users.

Is this going to change? Doubtful.

There’s another thread listing issues with the FS24 UI.

If it was meant for better use with an Xbox they would given it a built in cursor… I play on Xbox and it would be almost unusable without a mouse… clicking through all the options on screen with just the dpad highlighting everything would be awful

Which begs the question, why is it so utterly bad? No one who actually uses VR regularly would have signed off on that menu layout. As for that plane selection, it’s almost as if it was designed to be clunky and awkward.

How about a favourites menu for planes, or even just a drop down text list? There a lot of guff on there that will never get used and you have to sift through it all to find what you want.

Anyone actually think it’s a good system or an improvement over 2020? I’ve yet to speak to someone who likes it.

I think on balance it’s better in theory, but the current implementation is much worse. It gives the impression that the game is a WiP which you never want on an expensive piece of software.

  • It’s too big, which I believe is because there is a bug in the sizing. There is a mod on flight sim.to that activates this aspect of the UI and it makes it much better but exposes the bug(s).
  • The aircraft selection screen is, and this is not too strong a word, woeful. It needs a complete rethink. It was bad in 2020 and is much worse in 2024
  • The control input thing has taken some getting used to, partly because it is so poorly laid out. I think the mechanics of it, on balance, might be better but the layout needs some work

It is certainly a step backward.

Having bought the aviator version, I now have well over 100 aircraft available. Finding a particular plane is not easy, especially as I’m running in VR - I cannot type in the search box without taking my headset off. Any reasonable UI would split this into sensible sections (eg, airliners, turbo-prop) etc, rather than “Planes” which has the vast majority of aircraft in it and “Lighter than air” which only has 3, “Glider” which only has 4 etc. With such a large collection a “Favourites” section showing the aircraft you fly most often is essential.

Once you click on “Start Flight”, you are presented with an unedifying view of cloud cover or whatever until the aircraft/scenery/weather have all streamed in. Why on earth doesn’t it show something useful, for example the aircraft/airport statistics (stall speed, max speed with flaps, runway length etc)?

Everything seems to need so many clicks to get to now. Trying to optimise Terrain LOD when flying in VR for example needs 5 clicks to get to the right menu followed by a scroll-up to get the appropriate setting to be visible (due to a bug). And of course once I’m in the menu if I decide I want to cancel the changes I’ve made and start again there is no “Cancel” button.

And Asobo claim they use the sim often. I really find this hard to believe.

I like the new GUI. It’s more streamlined than FS20 that was clunky from the start.

NO, is a mess

I think the UI has a French flair about it.

I hate it.

I’ll add that my biggest issue with it is how it groups aircraft and liveries together. It really seems nonsensical compared to 2020. Some addon aircraft show up nine times in the aircraft selection menu and some have a whole bunch of variants grouped together. It seems there’s a new naming standard or something that needs to be adjusted to, but right now it’s a mess. Honestly if this part could be reverted to how it works in 2020 I could give the rest a low pass mark.

Needlessly over complicated rubbish…. Selectable filters might be helpful

The ability to offload anything you don’t want back to the cloud would be nice.

The new UI in the main menu is something I can manage, but the aircraft selection UI is an absolute disaster.

There are no favorites, only a few aircraft are visible in the overview, and there are nested submenus for different aircraft variants and liveries. It’s unacceptable for PC users, though it might be tolerable for console players.

Would add the livery selection, the variant selection, the airplane loading interface (now with that ridiculous circle for fuel), the EFB… it’s everything really cumbersome and unnecessarily difficult. That aside the EFB flight planning errors (y’day it told me that an A320Neo from Denver to San Francisco needs 115lb of fuel), which is another issue since it’s the only interface for flight planning.

Completely agree with the Livery section - the best word I can come up with it is that it’s unnatural. Click at the top, then click at the bottom, then wait, then click somewhere else.

And of course the fact that FS24 doesn’t save the last plane you selected makes the situation that much worse. So it’s a big NO from me too.

It takes 5 min just to look at the livieries… you should be able to see more than 3 of them on the screen at a time… and loading between all the screens is very long I guess is the nicest way to put it… you have to scroll of move or click something just to be able to view just about anything but one aircraft and 1 livery
