Why does the sim straight up freeze (for up to a minute) after a piece of content is done being downloaded?

Its little issues like these that always have me feeling shaky about the dev behind MSFS. Mainly its because when content is downloaded and added to plenty of other games this type of thing never happens. In fact it used to not happen in MSFS’s earlier versions. This means that if u are running the content manager to update addons and you’re flying the sim, these freezes happen in game too.

I love MSFS, but I’m getting a strong feeling that much of the legacy Flight Simulator codebase is holding this thing back, as from what I understand, MSFS is using this old code base and was not made from scratch (I could be wrong).

Either way, I hope MS or Asobo take note and make some hires, bc theres really no reason why 10 months+ into this game, when something like a display for the simrate being missing is a surprise to them. (that was alarming :eyes:) Especially with how many times its been mentioned in these forums.

an addon in community is likely to cause this.

i.e. the Islander plane in 1.0 caused this (has been fixed by developer).

Is it even possible to do that? Updating and Flying are separate events that cannot be done simultaneously in MSFS.

While updating there’s pause(s) after some downloads and that’s because the files are being decompressed.

Yes you can definitely leave the content manager running in the background by starting a flight, say if you have 10+ downloads in que.

I should have been clearer. It freezes for up to 50 secs after each download. Not a permanent freeze, and it happens after every download.

oh this. Yes, I have this also.

I think MSFS is unpacking the file or something. Never thought much about it.

I wouldn’t think too much of it either but having the whole interface freeze to the point where you can’t click on anything as well as having it also affect when you’re in game is really disappointing. Especially considering how normal live file patching is in the industry. There are tons of games out there which have no issue updating game files in the background without causing the whole game to freeze, hindering its use. It’s just an all around bad look for what is supposed to be a AAA game.

well lets put it this way.

In the amount of quirks, performance issue and incomplete things ins MSFS, I usually have bigger things I get annoyed at with MSFS

However, personally I think MSFS is a Beta program or ‘Early Access’, just wasn’t marketed as such.

I kinda accepted this begrudingly and work around all the issues and do with it what it already can do good, while waiting for them to finish the sim at one point…pretty saure they will finish it. MS doesn#t leave their games unfisnished, I am an Xbox user for years and while sometimes it takes a lot of time, in the end they deliver excellency in their games.

You are completely right to point out that you focus on what you deem to be bigger issues which kind of ironically makes my point. Which is, how are they struggling with little things like a functioning package updater that doesn’t bring the whole game to a halt for the 40 out of 40 updates it must do. And while I agree that microsoft does finish its games, this is not microsoft’s in house development. And no offense to Asobo, but as a relatively unproven dev, im sure a lot of us are fearful of them dropping the ball.

what I would hope for is for MS to put one of the experienced game studios to the help of Asobo.

There are so many QoL things in MSFS which are not what a game nowadays must deliver for the customers.

I believe they will get the sim part and all that right before they even get all the usabililty annoyances like the one you describe right.

I’m not gonna list them, might take all day

Maybe installer verifies checksum?

How do you fly in the sim and use or update the Content Manager at the same time?

I wouldn’t have even thought about downloading files in content manager personally I would expect issue’s especially as this game streams data on top of reading and writing data to your drive whilst flying. Most other games are probably not streaming huge chunks of data or pushing your pc to the same extremes.
Just because you can download at the same time it doesn’t mean it’s recommended.

What’s all this talk of asobo being in-experienced devs, this isn’t their fist game, for example A Plague Tale: Innocence is a quality game didn’t come across a single issue in an entire playthrough.

Well in all fairness while no “proven developer” in the industry has gone on to win the “Best Strategy / Simulator at the Game Awards”, MSFS has been awarded, notwithstanding any current limitations.

While there will always be complaints that there’s no fps display, unable to do download and fly at the same time without secs freeze and others like them, the 2M + ? customer base, SIM developers including some earlier reluctant 3-rd party developers are pivoting towards MSFS; that’s where the $ and huge customer base is.

So I guess to avoid the issue just wait till update completes, restart if necessary and then fly. That’s how I believe most practice. But I guess there will always be some differences.

To each his/her own.

Edit:
For fps just turn on DEV-MODE or use the graphics card functionality or the multitude of other options available.

For me personally it’s never worth my time monitoring fps as I have so many other functions to do with flight aviate / navigate / communicate and enjoying the awesome scenery. Again to each his/her own.

Anyways I will end my discussion here. Have a great day everyone.

Don’t worry, just wait for it. Asobo/MS has changed the packing method to reduce download file size.

Result is a slower unpacking process. Guess: it takes some high priority thread for performance reasons and that’s why it is freezing ? Maybe that’s the reason for the issues in flight ?

by queuing up downloads before a flight.

I wasn’t referencing an fps display. I was talking about displaying what rate your simrate is currently operating at. One has nothing to do with the other. Simrate is simulated time rate. Currently in the game if you move to 2x speed, 4x, etc. there is no way to know which lvl of time acceleration you are using. Something that was in previous Flight Simulates as well as competing flight sims. It’s not some random obscure feature. Like the moment you decide to add time acceleration in your game you WOULD immediately implement a way to let the player know which rate they are at. See every game with time acceleration ever.

The reason why this is important is bc this is a flight sim… most ppl don’t have time to fly 8 hour flights, so they use simrate to reduce the time of the flight. I shouldn’t be having to use hacky methods in order to figure out what rate I’m on, period. And as a developer myself, I know for a fact that implementing a feature to display the rate is as simple as offering up a variable, that variable being the current rate. Yet here we are 10 months in an no one on the team took the 30mins to and hour it would take to implement it.

Most likely, I’m totally aware of why it might be happening. The real problem is that in 2021 this kind of thing shouldn’t happen development wise. The industry has developed solutions for this, but of course not every dev team shares that knowledge. Which is why I say im weary of Asobo, proud of what theyve done so far, but if they are lacking in certain areas I hope they are making the necessary hires.

It’s completing the download, decompressing it and integrating it into the game. The game is cpu intensive so by flying while downloading using the content manager it will need cpu time to compete it’s actions following download. It’ll therefore grab that cpu time causing the pause.

I don’t know of any game that allows you to install content while playing it.

Just update before you fly or after.
