Why is a world update in the marketplace?

So this game is highly dependant on streaming the world to its users. So why, when they release a world update, must it be downloaded from the marketplace? How about just updating the content on the servers and let it be streamed down to everyone? Or must we download all future updates as nothing is done to the cloud data?

It’s an optional download - I didn’t take it because I don’t like Japan but will take the USA next time.

It’s not in the Marketplace; it’s in the Content Delivery System - that’s what the Content Manager is.

Not everyone wants to fly in Location X. And not everyone has the storage space to add 10’s of GB worth of useless data they’ll never use. If they forced these large, storage-consuming updates on everyone, then everyone would be (rightfully) complaining about the ever-increasing footprint of MSFS on their drive.

This is likely handcrafted airports and other data that wouldn’t stream quickly or efficiently enough.

The entire Japan update would take many, MANY GB to download and install to cache.

Not everything is streamed. POI’s, airplanes, handcrafted airports, there are LOTS of things which are installed and stored on your hard disk. The main stuff that is streamed afaik are ground textures and photogrammetry. Plus of course, real time traffic, weather, etc. but that’s just peanuts compared to the ground texture data.

That’s kind of … no, exactly what I said - that everything should be streamed so you don’t have to download anything.

Of course though, as others have said, if it’s hand crafted airports and not “world data” then having it in the marketplace makes sense.

I would agree with you. I’d rather see it all streamed.

What you’re downloading with the Japan update is all hand-crafted stuff. And there’s a lot of it. Too much to stream, I’d gather. I flew in Japan pre-update and again after. It’s a night and day difference.
