its been almost a year since release, two including the alpha, and almost all addon aircraft released are inferior to the default planes in poly count and textures and only the crj is more complete systems wise than default planes
I think the MSFS SDK is partially to blame combined with a new language third party developers have to wrestle with.
Thereâs also appears to be a slight apprehension to fully invest time into study level aircraft due to the foundations changing beneath you while youâre in development.
Itâs enough to cause me to pause on my payware idea until the SDK and sim has more stability.
Itâs been less than a year since release, and it takes time to make high-quality aircraft add-ons. Some of them have been great, and more are coming. Not sure what the complaint is?

Developers are working hard, but this is an uphill battle.
You need experience with both the legacy SDKs (from FSX and maybe P3D) but also experience with some modern languages and tools, and in order to put it all together you might actually need to be able to do some medium reverse engineering.
Good stuff is coming, the foundation is here. Asobo is not supporting most third party developers at this time, so smaller studios doing work on this platform are swimming upstream to build great stuff. They are taking the risk, and many are choosing to only do smaller projects because of it.
I can assure you though, itâs coming. Iâm not speaking my stuff, but only in general, this platform is really good. Some of talked how weâre still in beta and I begrudgingly agree.
Yeah so all these âdevelopersâ are jumping on the bandwagon and making money. They donât care that the quality is sub par. Also it seems Microsoft doesnât care either. If they did they would have minimum standards for in store content. They donât and I imagine never will. Port old junk over and give it a spit shin and release.
Itâs all about the money. Why else does anyone do anything anymore?
Lets not forget how high quality the default aircraft are in this release. They are easily payware quality, graphics and audio wise and of a really high grade. This has not happened before in a MS flight simulator release, so payware releases following a new version could easily be better than the default ones. A lot of companies will have a struggle to even reach this quality level. The great thing about this is that we already have a good amount of really good looking planes and the community is improving them at the system level.
Yes, you are absolutely correct.
It is all about the money $$$$
The Dev gets a large share and MS gets a share of every addon sold in the marketplace.
That is what the MSFS was designed for, to bring in $$$.
All they really have to do is give us enough simulator to make it sell.
But, I still like this new sim.
There are some very good small planes released already, the JF PA28 for example and some niche planes.
But for the big projects by the top-developers you just have to wait. Pretty sure the PMDG DC-6 and 737 will raise the bar. Also the Aerosoft Twin Otter is highly detailed from what we have seen so far and is not too far away. A2A is also developing the first MSFS plane.
Many of the available low-effort releases we have seen lately are just cashgrabs.
That plane will be a hard decision at that price point without an amphibious version. And even with a good amphib, there still arenât any good locations to fly from since there are no default docking locations or even wet runways. I would be inclined to wish for the newer Viking version, but, like the Kink Air, they use Honeywell instead of Garmin, so the glass panels would be all wrong without a LOT of original coding, which would probably raise the price out of my range.
Maybe itâs more about the planes you are interested in. In terms of GA planes an warbirds I canât say I agree at all. All Carenado planes - while certainly not âstudy levelâ, are at least on par with the default planes. In some respects the Mooney is superior. The Spitfire and especially the Corsair are in credibly detailed when it comes to systems and engine management. The JustFlight Arrows are superb and from what I hear the DC-6 must be exceptional as well.
But of course if you are an airliner enthusiast thereâs mostly rubbish out there so far.
I would guess the typical development cycle for a high fidelity aircraft is more than 1 year from scratch
There will be an amphibian version. But the will not model glasscockpits, its a steamgauge plane they are recreating.
Outstanding! Now if we can get some decent Maldivian scenery with wet dock starting points, things will look a little brighter!
Isnât it a difference in technology when we are talking visual quality?
As they shown the process of scanning aircrafts (with a special HD camera). Third party developer donât have access to that sophisticated technology⊠I always wondered why they have/develop that technique to only use it for the standard planes, as it is far superior to anything else.
Wouldnât it be the better approach to let Microsoft do itâs visual magic and scan aircrafts and provide that visual hull for an % of sales to the developers?
We give you the visuals ->10-20% margin (e.g) of all sales made on store exclusivâŠ
Get some continued revenue and push the ingame store at the same time!
I am glad that I sponsored this project with a whopping ⏠90,00 . People who are still saying that Asobo donât care and that itâs all about the money are âliving under stonesâ as we say here. Of course money is made. But as you probably know you only are able to make serious money by taking the customers seriously first.
And I feel that I am taken seriously because I am having a seriously great time with the sim. Wouldnât have wanted to miss it right from day one.
So why are people whining about a company thatâs making good money? Is it jealousy? Is it naivety? Do people really know what it takes to launch such a big venture and improve it every time without breaking the essentials? <<Donât get me wrong here, mistakes have been made past year, but simmers have been making as many if not more mistakes as well, not following the published guidelines for updating for a start.>> I think many people have no idea about the process involved whatsoeverâŠ
For me, every FBW release is overwhelming
Other Addons, build from scratch (e. g. A350), just need more time. Wait and see. Better then releasing fake Addons (cough 777).
The only addons that Iâve felt were worth the money are the JF Arrows
The likes of Captainsim and Bredok3d would have seen (from their research) how hugely popular (and highly-ratedâŠ) these âfrankensteinâ aircraft are in the freeware market.
Itâs inexplicable, but if people like terrible quality, then there is money to make off it too. Can you honestly blame them for doing so?
Ah, another optimistic thread. Do you own the Mooney, PA28, Stearman and CRJ?
