Why not "2024 Upgrade Edition" instead?

I dont like the idea of a new version, because first Microsoft told us that this would last for 10 years, and I feel like FS2020 is still not a finished product and feels a BETA all along

There are still many bugs, every update is a nightmare that introduces more bugs, installer stuck, broke things, crashes, autopilot is not complete, etc, and many missing features like missions that were promised in the roadmaps already

I think if they made this more like a payable upgrade, something along the lines of a ā€œ2024 Edition Upgradeā€, like the Anniversary Edition was a big upgrade and yes, it was free and I am thankful!, people would be happier, and even better for Asobo since ppl getting the game via GamePass will pay for this Upgrade edition instead of getting the new base game ā€œfor freeā€

I know in the end itā€™s the same thing, you will pay anyway, but at least you feel itā€™s still the same game with an expansion and not a shell on top of a previous version with the same roadmap and bugs, and dont worry about your addons will be compatible that is a big investment too,

because yes they stated that Marketplace addons will be compatible, but the big majorities that are in flight sim world for serious buy this addons directly from the devs, and even though this might be 100% compatible without changes, this wont stop those devs to make the excuse to make you buy an ā€œupgradeā€ version

also , what will happens with the Premium/Deluxe editions? will you get this content too in the new 2024? or you will need to buy the 2024 Premium/Deluxe edition again?

So you arenā€™t concerned about spending money, only on what you get for that money i.e. you are happy to pay for DLC for an existing sim, just not a new sim that may allow all your existing addons to run with it?

I see parallels with the XP11 to XP12 upgrade here. If you upgrade to XP12, you can still fly your XP11 planes as far as I know, though Iā€™m not so sure about other addon types.

To answer the OP - marketing
You do not attract many new customers with simple addons

Because Upgrade Edition = less month compared to a marketed Full Edition.

The logical thing to be is that since purchases are transferable to the new sequel for addons, it should for first party purchases, like the deluxe and premium editions content: the aircraft and airports included in them.

so buyer of MSFS 2024 should keep ownership of any content they previously purchased.

however, new base msfs2024 sim, and new deluxe and premium content, that is different from the first content for 2020 editions, these should not be free, and wonā€™t interfere with 2020 content itself.

by balancing pervious content ownership, and providing new content ownership in the 2024 sequel, will make any sequel acceptable, & this common ground can make MSFS evolve for many decades, rather than just sticking to one release with lets say 1 decade support, then abandon the support for the experience entirely as happened before.

Asobo show us they are not good to support One title.
How can they manage 20 and 24?
They should kill 20 and go forward or release missions as a dlc.

Honestly this is a bad take, they have been pumping out fixes and content this whole time. Comparatively stellar support compared to 99% of games and SIMS. Look at the garmin avionics and physics upgrades - best in class.

People have no issues paying for Xplane when its just been iterative upgrades since the dawn of time. If you donā€™t like the product they are offering, donā€™t buy it.

Steam figures may disaagree but I agree with you in principal.

Absolute numbers donā€™t always tell the truth. It also depends on the target audience. Iā€™d bet that half of those 6777 users are flying with a gamepad and full assists. If Ace Combat 7 had multiplayer, itā€™d attract more people than MSFS Xbox Reno and both of them combined would be 100x more gamers compared to PC MSFS simmers with DIY cockpits.

If I was on MS board of execs, I know which breed of the above users Iā€™d prefer. But Iā€™m not, so Iā€™ll stand with simmers and Iā€™d bet that the vast majority of those 336 are hardcore simmers.

TLDR: MSFS 2020 was a resounding success. MS/Asobo want more.

Its pretty standard to see half a studio be ripped from its current project to work on another project.

2020 devs will be working on bug fixes and updates, but at half the speed now that all the features are in.

Big AAA titles release an update every year/two years and people happily spend 60 or more dollars on it.

MSFS has cost us a one time whopping ā‚¬120 if you bought the premium and we got multiple world updates, avionics updates, new activities and new planes, all for free. Tell me which other game developer does this? It wouldā€™ve easily added up to another ā‚¬500 of value if you ask me (just look in the marketplace what is asked for an airport, and we got a couple of those for free each world update)

Iā€™m still waiting for someone to post a written declaration by Microsobo that MSFS would be supported for 10 years.

Imagine what would happen if MS stated that they would no longer charge for any more sim version upgrades, but every WU was now chargeable. Iā€™m not sure some users have a full grasp of just how much has been given away over the last three years.

True. However people generally donā€™t invest on yearly AAA titles. The above model is fine if youā€™re playing using a gamepad. But if you have set up an entire hardware platform on that title, along with lots of software addons, then you at least expect some compatibility and stability over the years.

Pretty sure MSFS2024 will have that, so all good.

If they didnā€™t we wouldnā€™t see this:

There are many others, but you get my point. People absolutely invest in yearly AAA games.

If we stop buying them, theyā€™ll stop making them. We donā€™t, so they donā€™t.

Can someone point me to where Asobo.MS state that they will keep working on just MSFS 2020 for 10 years? I keep seeing people stating that as fact, but I canā€™t seem to find that actual statement.

Microsoft has always released new versions of MSFS, and that doesnā€™t seem to be anything new here. Theyā€™re a business and not some kind of freeware project, even though we did get an enormous amount of free new content. And we will be getting more as well. Iā€™m not complaining about what I got so far for my one time 80 bucks fee.

So weā€™ll probably have to pay for the new update. What were you expecting, everything for free? Are you some kind of socialist who just wants to sit around and be handed free stuff the whole time? lol. MS/Asobo are a business, and they have a big team of around 300 peeps that need to be payed for their work. And it seems theyā€™ve done a LOT of work.

Weā€™ve pretty much got the whole world into our desktop computer, and itā€™s all there for us to explore. Youā€™re constantly making use of their servers, which are pumping all these gigabytes of data to your computer so you can enjoy the fruits of their work.

S oyes, there wil be a new version. You can decide for yourself whether you want to get it or not. You can stick to MSFS 2020 if you want, and it will remain as it is and even still receive updates, as well as 2024.

Donā€™t be such worried little quivering miceā€¦ lol. Weā€™re al along for the ride and itā€™ll be awesome  There have never been better times for us simmers (unless youā€™re still pining for FSX, but then at the same time when a plane/airport is released that looks a bit iffy, itā€™s being accused of just being an FSX port, so I dunno).

To clarify, ā€œ2020ā€ has never been mentioned in this context, as that is not a part of the official name of this product.

I know, but I used it to differentiate between just MSFS (not 2020) and MSFS 2024.

Anyway he seems to be referring to ā€˜the journeyā€™ and ā€˜The projectā€™ of which the release of MSFS was the first step. That leaves it pretty much open to interpretation and a release of a new version of MSFS wasnā€™t excluded by his statement

In that case they havenā€™t. The last I heard was that the 2020 roadmap would be honoured.
