I am a real pilot so I know how flying a real airplane feels like.
The cross winds in MSFS seem too powerful. Even when the windsock isn’t straight out I get thrown around a lot when trying to land and often when trying to take off.
I have a company in the game and when I get flights often the wind is so bad I can’t land or crash.
I tried turning the assistance to medium on the turbulence, but when I go on a mission it is back to realistic if I look at settings while in the mission.
Is there anything I can do about this? I turned off the online weather and that didn’t make any difference.
I would also like to switch runways from what the mission requires when the wind doesn’t match the runway the mission chose. I can’t find a way to do that either.
You may find these interesting reading. Essentially what I found in 2020 was that Asobo had “baked in” this fake gusting behaviour, and it didn’t matter the wind strength as it was always present, right down to calm winds. Lower the graph range far enough, and the same identified pattern is present. The pattern has changed in 2024, but it is still there. My tests with ActiveSky were a real eye opener. Gone were some of the visual aritifacts, and crosswind landings were quite predictable, and even pleasant!
I’m happy to repeat these tests from scratch in 2024, in the new SU2 beta.
One of the other things they got wrong, from memory was winds aloft. Instead of taking the wind at ground level, and then doubling it, they took the winds aloft, and halved it at ground level. There is a setting in ActiveSky to counter this behaviour.
If you haven’t tried it its well worth a look. It doesn’t currently work in SU2 Beta sadly, but I believe 1.4.13 has implemented a code change to support it, the devs may need to implemement a change at their end to support it.
I’d love to know your comments as real world pilots on what you think of the differences between Asobo, and ASFS weather.
Sadly I don’t think the latter can be used in Career Mode, if that is the focus for MSFS use.
In free flight my changes to the turbulence seems to stick, so it isn’t really an issue in free flight.
My focus is on Career mode. I have crashed a couple times on landings that should have been pretty easy because the wind just killed me. I can’t complete missions when I keep crashing.
Is there anything that will work in career mode? I am happy to buy an asset that will help as long as it works in career mode.
