Windows 11 24H2 and MSFS: observations, insights, issues and tips

I’ve noticed that there are topics appearing on the forum where users are reporting issues after installing Windows 11 24H2. I thought that starting a new thread specifically about this version of Windows and MSFS would be a better idea than spamming the threads where users are reporting issues.

I’m patiently waiting for the update to show up in my Windows Update. Once it does, before installing such an important update, I’ll create a system image as usual. That way, if anything goes wrong, I’ll be able to quickly revert to the version of Windows that hasn’t caused me any issues.

How about you?

Are you waiting patiently or are you downloading the ISO to install the update or maybe changing settings using the Local Group Policy Editor? Or have you already updated your Windows 11 through Windows Update?

Feel free to share your experiences with us.

As said in my thread…I updated manually and I’m experiencing sound problems and graphic stutters.

But its still playable for me as I’m on an old system anyhow and can’t use everything on ultra settings

I noticed that 24H2 update has appeared in my Windows Update. Before downloading it, I created a system image and I’m curious about what will happen after the update - will I encounter any issues?

I believe Microsoft are removing support for Windows Mixed Reality in 24H2, which may have a knock on effect for users - like myself - who use an HP Reverb G2 VR headset. So, I will probably hold off downloading this for as long as possible!

Along those lines…

If having downloaded and installed 24H2 and subsequently lost Windows Mixed Reality, if one used system restore to return to the previous version would WMR be restored???

Try “Go back” instead system restore.

edit
FYI, guys - do not delete the Windows.old folder located on the C drive after updating from Windows 11 to version 24H2. If something goes wrong or if you do not want the 24H2 version, this folder is necessary for reverting to the previous version of Windows.

I created the bootable USB on Wednesday evening. Usually I would back everything up and do a clean install, but I don’t have the time for that at the moment, and I use iCloud and Firefox rather than Onedrive and Edge.
This time i ran the upgrade from the USB and selected the keep everything option. It took about an hour, but so far no problems to report.

Hmmm. Any idea why this might be? see screenshot below

(just FYI, 24H2 has not darkened my doorstep yet  I just want to be prepared.)

How long have you been on your current version of windows? The go back option is obsolete after I think it’s thirty days after you upgrade as the windows.old folder is deleted automatically. When a new major release is updated you have those thirty days to evaluate with the option to go back. After that it’s a fresh install. If I remember correctly.

Edit: just checked and it’s 10 days not 30.

That would explain it. Thanks!

Is there any way to prevent the update to 24H2? Or will Windows automatically install it?

The “Go back” option might be grayed out because you haven’t installed the 24H2 version yet. If you want to avoid issues after installing 24H2 and then reverting to 23H2, it’s a good idea to create a system image just in case. So far, after installing 24H2, I haven’t had any problems. I should also mention that I don’t play in VR.

Thanks for that.

I’m not anticipating any problems other than losing WMR, but that’s a big one for me since I only use the sim in VR with a G2. Will be ordering a new VR headset but if I can put it off…

Current computer needs to have the update because it’s used for other tasks.

Will be building a new computer (you were one of the people helping me with that in another thread) but at the moment it seems prudent to wait for FS2024 and possibly next hardware generations.

I’m pretty sure it’s always an optional install, that may change when 23H2 goes end of life, but that’s not until November 2026.

Anyone did a clean install 24H2 (or upgrade) please? Bitlocker forced on us to use it with 24h2? (" If you clean install Widows 11 version 24H2 using a bootable USB, Bitlocker will automatically be enabled ") edit: Oh well Redirecting!

Do yourselves a favor and fully backup your systems guys. If anyone need it free version here Download Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - MajorGeeks (you can create a rescue media also, at PC start it will create 2 options, Windows 11 and Macrium Rescue section, can easily access and restore created backups if needed)

FYI, third-party software is not necessary. The built-in system image backup tool is sufficient.

Don’t be in a rush to update because honestly, there’s not much difference that I noticed. Just saying.

Thank you mate.
As you have probably noticed, I have an image backup from September 24.2024 on drive M. The latest version from today is saved on a different drive.
