Windows 11 and Reverb G2 in 2023: still "shaking" problems?

You can. But not with Win11 sadly.

So Microsoft know about it, they know it can be fixed (because it works in win10) and yet they don’t fix it?

That’s crazy, can we not petition?

just submit the bug. The more people submit it, the higher the chance of fixing it.

where can i submit this ?

Dear all
What is the status of this issue in late August 2023? Is it still there?

What are the current fixes?

Couple of questions:

  • is the issue still there
  • Does it only affect the Reverb G2? Or other headsets as well?
  • What are the fixes?
  • Is the OpenXRToolkit dampening effect enough to get rid of it?
(what would be awesome is if somebody could film through the lens with a phone or so to show how it behaves without and with the dampening of the OpenXRToolkit)

Many thanks

I used with success the brute fix with covering two of four Reverb G2 tracking cameras. Tracking is good, like this cameras are not required, no shaking.
Don’t ask me how it works but it works for me.

AFAIK this issue affects only G2 on Win11.

As far as I remember OpenXR Toolkit smoothing (Shaking Reduction previously named Prediction Dampening) helps with the issue, but this feature of the toolkit impacts Motion Reprojection.

the issue affects all WMR headsets in win11. And i will go mad if microsoft doesn’t do something about it, because it’s literally the only reason i’m still on win10 :frowning: The fact that this hasn’t been in adressed in 2 years is very disturbing.

Do you remember which cameras you covered? The side or the front?

I would love to hear also from some other people to confirm this trick…

I agree, very bad. I waited so lang and stayed on Windows 10… but now with a new PC, I almost need Win 11.

Do we have any idea if this issue is ALWAYS happening on Windows 11 with WMR headsets, or only in like 10% of all cases, maybe in combo with certain mainboards or whatever?
Or is it certain that it happens ALWAYS anyways?

In my case it was:

  • all the time (G2, Win 11, Ryzen AM5 compatible mobo, 7800x3D, 4090),
  • small jumping/vibrating, but annoying,
  • 99% cured by covering 2 of 4 G2 tracking cameras.

I no longer use G2, I migrated to Crystal, WMR no longer involved, so no such issues anymore.

Which of the four cameras did you cover? And how did this improve your tracking?

No impact on head tracking in sim, good as usual. Less vibration, jumping. Don’t remember which cameras I covered, you can experiment by putting two of your fingers on two selected cameras

You will immediately see the difference.

Sounds great. Only problem for me personaly is: I could only test this one I got the new PC with Win 11.
If it works, awesome. If not, I’m screwed :upside_down_face:

So if anyone here with this issue currently present could test this, would be awesome.

I covered the two side cameras of my Reverb G2 and it seems to help a lot. But also something weird happened as I only needed to temporarily cover the cameras to fix this issue. I’ll have to see how that develops.

I basically did this:

  • I had my headset powered off.
  • Covered the side cameras using a elastic band I found (slipped it around the headset).
  • Turned on the headset and started a flight in MSFS.
  • Did not see any crazy shaking anymore.
  • Removed the band during the flight and still no shaking.
  • Powered off the headset, restarted MSFS and even restarted my computer…
  • Cleared Environment Data…
  • Still didn’t see any crazy shaking it was doing before, even I didn’t had the cameras covered anymore.

Coincidentally today also came an update to OpenXR Tools. Who knowns if this did something.

Could someone try this? What is your outcome?

Thanks for your testings, very helpful. As for the OXR update, it will have no changes for WMR headsets, as mbucchia has said so in another post.

Ok, I think I will withdraw my last observation.

My previous experiments were done when I accidentally had Over-prediction reduction enabled from OpenXR Toolkit. I believe that when it is set to -8% I see the least shaky image. I understand that the setting is not intended to be used with MR.

I don’t know anymore if covering the cameras really helps. The biggest impact really is how hard you move (or your heart beats) and that’s why this is really hard to test and see what is really affecting to this.

Covering 2 G2 cameras helped in my case.
I can’t test anymore, I upgraded to Pimax Crystal.

I’m curious if anyone else on W11 has seen their shaking problems resolved. Considering finally making the leap

I’m on W11 and since using shaking reduction in OpenXR Tookit, I would consider it resolved.

Interestingly enough, I was messing around in sim the other day, bothered by the shaking. I tried covering 2 of the inside out tracking cameras, didn’t work great for me. At some point I must have hit mute on Windows, shaking became almost nonexistent. A lot of my shaking came from the over-ear speakers when loud sounds were being played. I took off the speakers, and now use a different audio solution, haven’t even noticed the shakes since.
