Would You Buy MSFS After Reading These Forums?

I haven’t read these forums in a while as MSFS has been unplayable for me after the last couple of updates. I was checking to see if there have been any mods or hotfixes to fix the sim. Unfortunately not. I was amazed however to read the overwhelming negative posts about MSFS and Asobo’s lack of support for this product after the last updates. It appears as though I’m not alone with my performance issues and a good portion of the MSFS community are experiencing the same problems as me.

I know if I was looking to buy this simulator today, I would look at these forums to see what people are saying. I would certainly think twice before spending money on such a damaged product after reading about all these issues that many are having with no solutions by the developer.

Hopefully Asobo will get their act together and put some effort into fixing the sim, rather than pushing out new add-ons, scenery and extras for a busted product.

Well, yes I would. I think MSFS is a work in progress and the devs are commited to hear the community voices. Fair enough for me!

Yes I will still buy this sim because it is miles better than other sims out there despite the bugs and it will only get better.

I’d probably do what I did, which is play on Game Pass first to check I was able to. Forums for computer games are toxic as all hell though so I’d not pay too much attention here. Of course, it’s dominated by people having a bad time, because if you’re quietly having a good time with the product, why bother posting?

I’d buy it. I’ve been playing video games on PCs I’ve built for the past ~8 years, and it’s given me a good perspective on how development works. While there is a lot of negativity, there are also a lot of people happy with the product.

This sim is a massive undertaking being done in a pandemic in a country that presumably (and hopefully) has better labor rules for game devs than the US does. I wasn’t expecting it to be completely perfect, and I’m not surprised when there are glitches that come up from updates. The unfortunate truth is that QA isn’t always going to find every issue, because some issues only exist on certain configurations.

I see Asobo engaging with the community, pushing updates according to a specified roadmap, and transparency on the features and expected timelines. Would it be nice if Asobo was able to get hotfixes out sooner? Sure. Am I disappointed that they aren’t pushing hotfixes out within a week or two? No. The bigger the game is, the more uncontrollable factors there are. I wouldn’t be surprised if it takes at least a full year for the game to mature, and even then we can expect glitches and bugs coming out every now and then.

Every simulator that came out had a rough beginning. And it’s normal - it’s a simulator after all, you need more than a game engine with a couple of characters and game mechanics.

It’s staggering how much has been done and achieved in MSFS 2020, it’s simply the next level when comparing with other older simulators. This has been overshadowed by many due to the numerous bugs, issues and nit pick on certain planes, some of which I can agree with (few physics elements being improved), or those that are unrealistic for a base flight sim (payware level planes out of the box for example).

The loud minority of people complaining may have or may not have a proper reason, but Asobo and MS have been very transparent from the beginning, published feedback snapshots, development roadmaps and even monthly live Q&A with key actors in the development process. They read the forums and twitch chat to see what we want, and are working hard to reach many’s incredibly high expectations. We tend to take this for granted, but I hope people can see both sides when they visit flightsimulator.com and the forums.

Yes!! I love aviation specifically airliners, I had stopped flying XP11 several months before MSFS trailer came out because I got bored of the ugly scenery (auto gen buildings) and the washed out colors, etc. aerodynamics were fine but I was ready for more eye candy as well.

Yes, I would… Because I already bought it.

But also, I don’t have a herd mentality. I don’t follow or believes in other people’s reviews and feedbacks. Other people are having problems. Sure. But that doesn’t mean the problems will happen to me too, nor my experience may be the same as theirs. Simply because, everything is highly subjective.

Every decision that I’ve ever made are my own, without being influenced by other people. The choice of phones I get, the car I drive, the games I play. All of them are based on my own interest and my own decisions, I don’t let anyone influence me.

You also need to know that people only go to these forums because they’re experiencing something that they’re not expecting. In other words, forums are always flooded with people having problems or questions. If you are getting great experience and everything works okay for you. Then most people don’t see any reason to go into the forum and post “This is great. This is awesome. I’ve been flying here, and I’m sharing my enjoyment.” This is very rare. But not because the experience is very rare. But because the people who find the need to post this are very rare.

That’s why you’re seeing a lot of bias in forums like these. If you have 10% of 100,000 people having problems. And all of them post this in the forum. Then you would see 10,000 posts posting issues and since 90% of them have no issues, they don’t need to post anything positive, because the product is already doing what they’re expecting it to. And even by some rare case that 1% of this 90% of people post something positive in the forum, then you would only see 900 post saying it’s good. When you compare it to the total number of posts, then you would see 900 positive posts, and 10,000 negative posts. So you would see 8.3% positive posts, versus 91.7% negative posts. Giving you the illusion that this game is 91.7% negatively scored. But that’s not the truth, the negative is only 10% out of the 90% positive that’s not visible.

This bias is the reason why I don’t let reviews or forum feedbacks like this to influence my decision. Because it’s almost impossible to be absolutely 100% sure that these feedbacks cover the entire sample size of every single person’s experience.

It was fun to play but it’s been weeks since I touched it. It’s sad. Since I’m not poor yes I would buy it, but it’s still a lot of money and the frustrations are real. Maybe one day 2-3 years when XP12 is out this thing will be up to par. Who knows

The issue is Microsobo set those high expectations, not the community. Since the middle of last year, they were publishing videos showing stuff that is either still absent from the sim or was just recently added (water masks). They made HUGE claims about live weather. We have weather that somewhat works, some of the time. They hyped up the glass cockpits only to deliver what I would consider to be a cartoonish mockery of actual Garmin units that were missing most of their important features, and the features that were there don’t even work right. They spent months in Q&As hyping up SU3 as THE update that would finally revamp and fix the Gamins and fix their issues. Yet they didn’t deliver on that either. Much like huge promises in past sim updates.

So I don’t think the community’s expectations are unrealistic. They’re based on what Microsobo sold us. And they failed to deliver.

All that said, I would likely still buy the sim today, but I wouldn’t be so quick to invest money into marketplace add-ons and hardware like I did. Not much point buying all that stuff if you can’t even run the sim at a playable level when it used to work fine previously. For many of us, we had a previously wonderful experience prior to WU3. These last 2 updates bascially wrecked the sim for us and put it into unplayable / barely usable territory.

The thing I’ve learned from this and other game release over the last two years is that you will get a much better experience if you wait until a year after launch before you jump in. I expect that to be the case for sure with MSFS.

And reading these forums should clearly communicate that to anyone considering buying.

Yes, I would buy it again…I invested a lot of money into this simulator..I bought a new laptop and bought some addons so that I would be able to go simming…

Forums don’t determine what I see in a flight sim with my own eyes and experiences…
In that case I would have stopped buying flight sims after Microsoft Flight because of reading AVSIM forums.

If I only read the forums first… Then no I wouldn’t buy it. However even with the issues it has its still playable for me, just not anywhere I want. I know to fly specific places I don’t have issues and based off that it’s excellent and I would buy it and recommend it.

Interesting topic!

I never buy stuff based solely on user reviews let alone on opinions from forums.

Sure it gives you some insight. But ultimately if the product interests me, I try to inform myself as best as I can of course, but I usually end up buying anyway.
It sounds a bit controverse but that is how it is.

In conclusion. Yes I would buy it.

Nope. I’d save myself the wasted time, money, and stress.

Yes, no hesitations at all. This place is no different from a lot of forums where you have a core group of people taking what appears to be every opportunity available to voice their displeasure and wanting everyone to know about it. On the other hand there are other’s that are happy enough with the sim and just get on with it, warts and all.

People’s expectations and levels of acceptance vary so that needs considering too to decide where you personally sit in the ‘angry at everything it’s a dumpster fire’ to blissfully happy ‘best thing ever’ spectrum.

You don’t have to be an academic to realise that drawing a conclusion or making an informed decision is done by looking at a variety of sources and considering different perspectives, but common sense would say it’s the right thing to do. In that regard, this forum should never be the be all and end all one stop shop to decide whether to buy this sim or not.

Surely yes

As I often do, I would go on Youtube or Twitch TV, and see how people, streamers and community use it live and have fun with it

So likely I would enjoy also to play it and get it
