Hello everyone! Apparently the new 2024 SDK allows to simulate forward swept wings aircraft, and I really want to give it a try
. For this purpose I’m starting the development of the perfect candidate : the Grumman X-29A.
I’m creating this post to share the progress I will make. Also even if I’m great at modelling aircraft, I’m still a beginner in the sim implementation process. So this post is also made to catch the eye of developpers who can be interested in helping.

Definitely an interesting project! Look forward to following the progress.

Best of luck and hopefully you get a boost from some developers who can assist. I’d love to see this in sim. The X-29A captivated me so much as a kid, especially as I was a big NASA nerd (still am.) I will keep an eye out for updates!

Hello, quick update. I did some progress in the cockpit, and I wanted to share a picture before coloring it, just because I think it looks cool
The only problem I have is that there aren’t a lot of pictures of this aircraft’s cockpit, and all the circuit breakers inscriptions are unreadable in its flight manual. I know that years ago the National Museum of the USAF had a 360° view of its cockpit. Unfortunaltely it has been deleted and I didn’t save it. If anyone has such visual documentation I would be gratefu!
Also thanks to the DCS community sense of detail about their F-5 cockpit (which the X-29 one is based on), I made it with the real-life dimensions they shared (so it is not just an “artist” view). I also learned about the standard MS25212 about pannel sizes.

Hey! New update on the cockpit’s color
I’ve also modeled the canopy opening mechanism. I managed to do a 3d scan of this mechanism with pictures of an F-5 cockpit posted on prime portal. Its dimensions should be really close to real world :
Now I will work on the ejection seat, the joystick and the canopy!

Fantastic! I remember trying to fly this in X-Plane 7… It’s been too long, I’d love to give it another try now in MSFS24
thank you for your work

Fantastic! Used to fly this as an RC model back in the early 2000s.
Looking forward to your development. Fingers crossed that you will have success!

Hi! New update, the model is now ~80% complete! I’ve carefully placed most of the external rivets/screws, almost finished the nose landing gear area and worked on integrating the cockpit in the fuselage.
For now the rivets are all white, but their color will blend with the fuselage once in the sim
Now I will work on the main landing gear bay, finish the canopy and the aircraft texture!

Hey everyone! New little update to announce that the 3D model is essentially finished!
Now I will create all the animations, bake everything, create LODs and than start the implementation in the sim

Looks AMAZING!!! This is exciting!
Fantastic work @grodano5038!!! Any idea of when or how it will be available?

Thanks I appreciate it! Pretty hard to tell honestly, maybe I’ll need 1 year to have a finished product

Thank you
I’ve slowed down the development of the X-29 because I’ve got a job. For now I’ve made the electrical system, defined basic aero and tried making the flight control system with wasm (but I still need to learn more about the sdk as it doesn’t behave as I’d like it to).
Moreover the whole model color is still in the “blender” format, so I’m developing a tool to easily bake the color on png textures for msfs (I’ve also started a new plane in order to better develop this tool
).
Basically I will go back to the pure development part as soon as I can easily export the model texture!
