I feel like this might get moved to another area of the forum, but it’d be great if it stayed here for visibility’s sake. Experiencing a lot of crashing to dashboard flying more complex aircraft since either AAU2 or Texas City Update. Also the “black avionics” thing that I’ve read so much about (usually seen on Series S) has finally started to be a real issue as well, on Series X. I’m seeing this with PMDG 737, Longitude, TBM930, Vision Jet and Honda Jet. It’s happened with default scenery and payware scenery (the latter has been abysmal on FPS recently, but the FPS drops don’t seem to have any rhyme or reason as to when the avionics go black, or the whole sim crashes back to dashboard anyway).
This happens during cold and dark start, when I’m heavily engaged with the avionics for a proper setup for departure.
There’s also a big tendency to crash, just recently, when using the Toggle Taxi Ribbon mapping. I have it bound to a button and it works well to show me where I’m taxiing in the dark but I can turn it off when I have a reasonable path in sight to the runway - the sim doesn’t like to play nice with liberally toggling this mapping anymore.
I don’t use rolling cache, the internet connection in my home is exceptional.
I just feel like I always do everything “right” when I launch the sim, and it’s served me well, through several updates that all came with their own launching of online performance complaints, etc, I usually just skated past that and enjoyed a great experience on X|SX. I always start the sim and re-seat all of my peripherals every launch, keep things updated, etc. But now unfortunately it’s pretty unplayable in that every time I get excited to fly I have to look sideways at the sim hoping it’ll let me complete an entire flight tonight and it used to do that all the time but tonight, I’m wasting my night typing this post instead hoping that it gets some helpful discussion going and some improvements to performance. Or even advice as to how I could be doing something better.
Love this game so much and so excited every time I get to fly something different - I really miss it. I’m thinking maybe the MS/Asobo team is realizing that launching 2024 is the only way around some of this technical debt and bloat? If that’s the case, I’m excited it’s only a year and change away cause I’ll for sure buy it, I just wonder if there’s some kind of a hotfix that’s getting put together to address this crashing issue because it sucks and I want to play this game until the next one comes out.
Every time I think the black screens/CTD issue is purely memory-related I see a post like this that makes me question that assertion…
Yes, memory outages would occur at random due to the innumerable variables, however some people seem to get more than their fair share. In the four months I’ve been using MSFS on Xbox X, I can count on just a couple of fingers how many times default aircraft have crashed the sim when flying around default scenery. Even the PMDG 737 with the standard scenery is extremely stable (for me, at least). Heck, even FlyTampa’s Corfu is pretty stable with the stock A320neo — and that’s a challenging airport for the Xbox under any circumstances.
Check out my thread in this forum (General Discussion). Can’t remember the title exactly (look for PMDG 737 and third-party scenery) but myself and others have detailed our experiences with various high-detail sceneries coupled with high-fidelity aircraft such as the 737 and ATR. By largely sticking with certain developers — or by limiting how often I toggle between views/cameras — I now manage to fly pretty CTD-free on Series X.
But to be honest, those like you experiencing what I’d call abnormally frequent crashing might not benefit as I suspect there’s something more to it than just memory.
I just reinstalled sim myself due to crashes on xbox which started happening more with aau2 update. The amount of data 75gb is ridiculous that you have to download again plus another 100gb to re download all your stuff.
The natural fallout from an uninstall. What was un-installed has to be re-installed. If you didn’t have to download all that stuff again, then it wasn’t really uninstalled in the first place.
That’s one benefit of the PC version. You can make a backup copy of the ‘Official’ folder, and save yourself some time with a re-install, as it should check over all those folders to see if anything is missing. Useful for moving the sim to another PC, for example.
Yes, exactly! A complete sim deinstall and smooth some-addons-at-a-time reinstall is exactly the best approach!
6 months of extreme CTDs ended with a forced reinstall after the AAU1 install broke the sim completely. Now barely even black screens happen (at least the way i use the sim at the moment). Have severe stuttering at times, but have learned to live with that.
Some 280 addons installed, but not yet all of the ones i had before reinstall.
Dont expect bug/CTD free, but theres a good chance it will significantly improve your experience.
The content manager sometimes messes up installs of addons or patches. Ive seen it installing PC addons (u see it on the file size downloading) on my Xbox X. And sometimes it gets stuck in a loop trying to install something. Last week it was unusually bad to download anything from marketplace.
With time your installed copy can get corrupted bit by bit. That can never be patched. Only reinstalled or overwritten.
That said, there are several bugs out there. This might only be one of the issues which you are experiencing.
And if the sim feels or looks weird at startup of your flight, restart the sim. Some days i have to restart several times before getting a stable startup. After that, it usually stays good for that flight.
I’ve found in the past month that it’s 50/50 weather my sim crashes when in the PMDG 737-800. It’s always when I open up the navigation map too. Didn’t have this issue when the 737 first came out.
