Thank you, yes, the symptoms are similar and it might be related. I left a post there as well, but in my case the reserved space is just about 260 GB, so well below the 500 GB limit described there. The broken update check I am experiencing seems to be only connected to the number of installed packages (parts of add-ons).

Personally mine was just stupidity. I had to go into settings and turn the data on.
