Xbox users only - black screen / ctd discussion

How’s the issue now? Resolved?

I tried two different scenarios on the public SU15

1: payware airport (RCSS), payware scenery (Taipei), payware airplane with complex avionics: ABO once the dual GTN750’s were launched and set to map on the L screen and R on the terrain (high workload scenario) - but no CTD after flying around. FPS was marginal (~20) with no stutters but definitely a reduced LOD when flying around a highly complex area.

2: default airport (KEQY), payware scenery (KCLT/CLT), payware airplane with complex avionics: no ABO, no CTD after 1.5 hours of flying and pushing pretty much every button on the dual GTN750’s. much better than the original sim version for sure. LOD was decreased at times to prevent crashing but only for a few seconds at a time. 40-50 FPS with no issues.

Other notable settings

Photogrammetry: on
Live weather: on
Multiplayer: off
Traffic: off
Data cap: none
Aircraft: C414AW - GTN 750

Haven’t had time for a flight but loaded the IniA320 v2 into FlyTampa’s KBOS. Turned on some systems, did the drone cam, whole deal. Live weather (which was rain) and live traffic on. No black screens, no stuttering at all.

I did notice some ground vehicles started disappearing depending on where the camera was panning so the LOD decreasing to prevent crashing appeared to be working.

Seconded on this point. I also noticed that when it seemed like it was going to CTD when I loaded in at JFK, it took a second and then pushed through working. Albeit with some lower LODs, but still looked good enough to me.

Resolved within reason. The add ons known to be challenging to Xbox remain so. During beta, the folks who insisted on running known offenders, and sometimes in multiple, experienced difficulties, as one would expect. The update did not fix any poorly (for Xbox) coded add ons and I’m not going to name names, but no surprises there. That said, some folks were (are?) able to run some of these some of the time and it was frustrating during beta if folks judged the update using these as their criteria. For my part, and I had over 50, maybe many more beta test flights since March and BS/CTD was a thing of the past for me when the number and quality of add ons was within reason for Xbox Series X. So I would say resolved. YMMV and of course, there will always be some other issue than BS/CTD.

I flew the a320v2 from KJAC to KLAX last night after all the updates installed. Everything on except AI traffic. Weather was pretty bad in Jackson Hole and pretty cloudly in LA on arrival. Smooth framerates even in the rain/sleet leaving Jackson but to maintain this coming into LAX 24R there was almost zero detail loading in the surrounding city. Didn’t even look like its usual post-apocalyptic self… just one big flat satellite image. Except for a pretty blurry Kia Forum that poped out of nowhere. I don’t even think SoFi stadium loaded.

That’s great to hear Nikita, I’m going to actually fire up the SIM for the first time in 6 months and get myself addicted again.

It was for me the Black Screens killing it, if that’s fixed, it even for vanilla I’m happy.

Besides - gotten bored of CoD now. Lol.

SU15 now allows me to depart/land my PMDG 738 at Fly Tampa’s Las Vegas airport. This is the fix I’ve ben waiting for. No more Avionics black screen on Xbox Series X. Thanks to all concerned.

Yes I second this. Flying PMDG out of Vegas is so beautiful now. However flying the inibuilds a320 out of Vegas can be tough, as I black screened there a few times.

Still an issue, SU15 an onwards looks like it will be forever plagued with missing avionics

Here we go again, black screens, A320 V2 - on take-off from Hamburg airport (third party add-on), when overflown Barcelona airport (third party add-on) again black screens, just in default airports (including improved) and some 3rd party airports seems quite stable performance
screen below - when overflown LEBL

I guess that’s on the developer of the add-on to optimise? The vanilla seems cured or am I wrong?

vanilla maybe cured, as for add-ons - they are sold on the official market, and even now, it is not our job to ask every developer to optimize, the developer of this game should check each product before, this is a paid software and should work (I know this is rhetorical, but it’s simple and logical things, i guess)

Don’t know if any of you know QGU on YouTube.
He mentioned uninstalling and reinstalling.

Might be useful.

So far I am impressed with my return on the Xbox X, it looks better than I remember. And no issues so far.

List of “Poorly Optimized add ons” on the Xbox Version would be a good idea for general public. Those who use several addons in combination would be an official/inofficial list (a small rating system in terms of stability and performance) a great idea.I think we can implement this with the community everyone has the same Xbox and as soon an addon causes e.g. LOD reduction, BS or CTD it comes on the list (If many report the same). I am aware the combination of addons also causes a lot of problems. But the marketplace is overloaded with junk software and some addons clearly cause a lot of problems, they are still sold.

We did have a thread about it but it just got too long, I think. And we actually found that, although we’ve identical machines, people’s mileage varied significantly — at times to the point that recommendations became quite subjective/controversial.

I fear making such a list would be the online equivalent to dousing oneself with Jet-A then reaching for the continuous relight switch. The posts I read during SU15 beta where folks insisted on testing each version using the most well known and agreed upon problematic add ons, well that was amazing. It may not be too far off the mark to surmise that the bush pilots and GA flyers lost detail at distance so a lucky few could enjoy one or more of about six add ons that clobber their Xboxes?! I’m not going to make any friends calling that out any further than I just did. Time for '24!

This is the same conclusion I’ve come to. The new code for TLOD is “if you’re not looking at it, it doesn’t exist.” So panning left or right you get the worst popping of terrain and details we’ve ever seen. That’s only great for people who stare forward for their sim experience. Happy people with the PMDG can fly the world by at FL33 for 5 hours with no black screen. Cool.

Yes thats right

I enjoy both kinds of flight simming, Airline & GA, VFR & IFR, and often when I am flying an airliner, I am also enjoying the view when not executing a pilot task. There are probably a lot of users who do both, or certainly more than one kind of flight. Would have preferred that we exited the beta with the occasional black screen or crash when asking too much of the Box to hold on to a little more detail at distance. The key words here are occasional and little. That compromise may have been difficult or impossible to achieve for all possible users. And so I continue to fly as I always did, but giving SU15 a well deserved rest after spending a LOT of time test flying it March-May. Hoping for better from 2024.
